The Purple Yoshis are a species of Yoshi. The Purple Yoshis in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island only play the worlds 5th levels.
They also appear in Yoshi's Story, in the opening cutscene and the game itself, which can be unlocked by collecting all the Heart Coins in each level.
They appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. Yoshis can turn purple by eating a Durian or a Pepper.
