Italics[edit]

Hello, P-Tux7! Thanks for your contributions. When writing titles for media like games, films, TV shows, and publications, please remember to italicize them. This is done by placing two straight apostrophes (not quotation marks or curly apostrophes) on both sides of the title, or clicking on the I icon above the text box and typing out the title. For example, typing out ''[[Super Mario Bros.]]'' generates Super Mario Bros.

If you are using a device that uses curly ("smart") punctuation, you may need to disable this function in your device's settings to be able to type out the correct apostrophes.

PNG Monstrous[edit]

Just so you're aware, reuploading images purely for the sake of optimizing the file size is highly discouraged by the image use policy. SGoW(Talk) SGoW sig.png 12:55, March 17, 2025 (EDT)

Hello, please heed the above message. Uploading just to reduce the file size is unnecessary when there's no change to the actual image and if anything only uses up storage space on the server. Lucina costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 06:28, March 20, 2025 (EDT)

I would very strongly suggest reading and heeding the above messages, as you are continuing to do this. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 01:27, March 21, 2025 (EDT)

What's wrong with it? The image use policy says to consider people with slow or metered connections (especially mobile internet). I remember the days of dial-up and there are still people with that sort of connection. In fact, The Spriter's Resource is frequently laggy or even browser-crashing for me due to all its images on busy pages using too much RAM. I understand that this takes up more server space, but it ultimately services our users - the people whom the contributors to MarioWiki serve - by taking less of their time to load, less of their RAM, and less of their bandwidth. I would also like to point out that even recently-uploaded images are not compressed with PNG Monstrous when they could be, including yours. I would not have to optimize the images if they were optimized before they were uploaded. That's understandable for old images, but today, we know better. P-Tux7 (talk)

I used to be on ViaSat, one of the slowest and most heavily metered connections that still exists, and beaming through a forest no less. I never had issues with the small images on Mariowiki or TSR. I don't use Monstrous, and I don't think other people should, because it tends to screw up the metadata and causes colors to display incorrectly. Either way, you should focus less on me asking you not do so and more on the wiki bureaucrat asking you not do so. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 09:37, March 21, 2025 (EDT)
Please stop reuploading images only to optimise file size; violating MarioWiki:Image use policy on the Super Mario Wiki. This isn't a warning, and it's possible that you made a mistake by accident or without realizing it; this is simply a reminder for your information. If the action continues, then a warning will be issued. Thanks for reading and keep contributing.
If you feel this reminder was undeserved, you may appeal it.

Don't deliberately ignore what others are telling you, please. You have any disagreement with the rule put in place, take it up with Porplemontage (the proprietor and the one who maintains the technical side of the wiki), but the rule is you don't upload just to reduce file size and you shouldn't knowingly disobey it. The c-word[edit]

That pun is so bad I think it crosses the threshold from "bad pun" to just a "bad word." I wish people would stop saying it. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 10:44, April 10, 2025 (EDT)

Doc, I've conferred with Nintendo101 and I have confirmed that it is preferred to crop the sprite to only the area with content, even when the texture has extra blank space. Extra blank space shrinks the sprite in the gallery and makes it harder to see. P-Tux7 (talk) 14:17, April 14, 2025 (EDT)

That's not the issue here, it's that that so-called "word" is painful to read. I'd appreciate if you'd just say "cropped." (It probably doesn't help that the user who introduced it to the wiki, Trig Jegman, was later outed and banned due to some public beliefs that come off as rather.... movie-Thanos-like. Kinda poisons it, but I found it annoying when he said it too.) Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:12, April 14, 2025 (EDT)

Thanks for fixing my images[edit]

I had figured out the site I used to optimize images and said it "wasn't lossy" and was lying, which sort of embarrassed me and made me drop out of doing it completely. I would like to know if there is a site where I can do it properly. Do you know one?

You should download PNG Monstrous. It's an executable program instead of a website, but it is always guaranteed to do lossless compression. If you want the most compression, make sure to check all 6 checkboxes before running it. While this makes it take longer, it makes the image smaller. P-Tux7 (talk) 13:17, April 17, 2025 (EDT)
