Improving aboutfile descriptions

For the past couple months, I've been working to clear out Category:Files with missing Aboutfile description. Due to the sheer number of files, many of the descriptions I've added are quite lacking, which does bother me. However, I realized that in actuality, plenty of the descriptions that are already on files might not be great, either. Focusing on just the files that currently don't have descriptions is not the solution to this accessibility issue. Instead, once every file has a description, we can go back and look through them all and update as needed. More so I mean, feel free to pick a category of images from say, a game you enjoy and know well, and look through the file descriptions.

The aboutfiles that need the most work are ones that simply say the title of the work its from or that it's simply a screenshot from a work. We could also get more specific with repeat descriptions used for dozens of different files in the same category, such as describing the appearance of a planet from Super Mario Galaxy or explicitly typing out the name of a badge or item from Paper Mario.

Going through descriptions has other benefits as well, such as catching duplicate files, correcting categories, and adding sources.

NIOL citations

As the creator of the proposal to require that foreign names have citations, it's only right that I put in place a method to help get it done.

While Nintendo101 (talk) is focusing on recurring subjects (check out his community garden, I want to use this space to focus on subjects who only appear in one or two games. We can try and get out references for subjects like these by going on a game-by-game basis, as finding the sources are much simpler, especially with a text dump. But where they lack in complexity is in sheer number.

My plan is for interested users to pick a game, and then focus on getting citations exclusively for app subject types in that game. For instance, I'll work on TTYD (or at least the Switch remake for now, since that's what I have a text dump of).

Citation tips

  • Make a format on Google docs you can copy paste to the wiki (bring up my TTYD example)
  • Quotes are the best here, if you can find them
