Backwards compatible games list

Is there a source for these games? they seem like randomly picked out games to me, and I see zero indication of games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Super Mario Maker 2 being absent on it. - YoYo (Talk) 16:08, January 16, 2025 (EST)

I couldn't really find a list of games at the source, beyond what's in the backdrop of the games compatibility section (which already shows a lot less on my iPad screen than the current list on our wiki). That same section does state "Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Yeah, the image won't show up fully on some screens, which is why we uploaded the extracted, full image to the wiki. I can reword the section to make it clear these are just the ones confirmed at the moment. Technetium (talk) 16:43, January 16, 2025 (EST)

Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World

Should we acknowledge the appearance of what appears to be a Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World port for the original Nintendo Switch (the backward compatibility section in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct featured new art of Woolly World)? Nelsonic (talk) 22:00, April 2, 2025 (EDT)

The Nintendo UK Direct displays a picture of Yoshi's Crafted World instead, so I think it would be best to treat this as a mistake/oddity unless a port of Woolly World ends up being confirmed as a real thing. SGoW^(Talk) 07:56, April 5, 2025 (EDT)

I agree with @Shy Guy on Wheels that we don't have to acknowledge it (since it's likely a mistake, since all other versions of the direct, not from America, show Yoshi's Crafted World instead) until it's officially confirmed. Yoshi18 (talk/contribs) 12:43, April 5, 2025 (EDT)

Regarding the video game console generation categorization

To get this opinion out of the way first, I do not like the video game console generation system. I won't dwell on it here but to keep it short the system we know of today was largely created sometime in the mid-2000s by various Wikipedia editors. In recent years it has been criticized by several video game historians and researchers as the numbered generation system is not widely understood due to its arbitrary nature.

With that out of the way, I want to ask about where the Nintendo Switch 2 even falls into regarding this? Currently on this wiki the Nintendo Switch is filed under "Eighth generation" but on Wikipedia it is both filed under "Eighth / Ninth" with the following note "The Switch has been compared and considered to compete with consoles of both the eighth and ninth generation by sources.". I have seen some attempt to categorize the Nintendo Switch 2 under the "Ninth" but where did that come from? That sort of leads into how we even determine how this console generation system even works? Who even makes that call? I'm not quite sure the answer is sources on news sites since they often contradict each other regarding this. So what gives? --Bro3256 (talk) 01:37, April 8, 2025 (EDT)

For what it's worth, the "Ninth generation" point came from The "History of video game consoles" page, on the "Console history timeline by generation" table. That being said, with the console not even out yet, it's kind of hard to say what exactly the generation it belongs to even is... Fundamentally, though, no matter what we do, it's going to be fairly arbitrary, because the original system itself is already arbitrary, and if we choose to not follow it for the Switch 2, well, that's an additional arbitrary decision on top of that. Trying to come up with some decision for what console generation the Switch 2 belongs to without it being "arbitrary" to some degree is kind of fundamentally impossible. ~Camwoodstock ( talk • contribs ) 02:25, April 11, 2025 (EDT)
