DK not confirmed[edit]

They showed Donkey Kong right after they mentioned the Story Mode. Donkey Kong could be just an opponent. It's not confirmed that he's a playable character. For all we know, Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi may be the only playable characters. B ron 3000 Luigi's face icon. 20:10, 18 January 2018 (EST)

It's highly unlikely that DK will be just an opponent character, considering he has no other traits that make him stand out from the other playable characters, or from the boss character. He's the same size, has a character face icon, has a racket, and has been playable in almost all previous Mario Tennis games. And unlike the boss fight, while playing against him in the video, it looked like a normal tennis match instead of some boss fight. MarioComix (talk) 21:40, 18 January 2018 (EST)
I'll also add that DK has a gauge like that of the other playable characters. All the other enemies fought in the story mode part of the trailer don't have that.--Mister Wu (talk) 19:56, 19 January 2018 (EST)
Giving my two cents, while points given are true, I still believe it's possible that DK is a CPU opponent and not playable. It could be like the case of the Mario & Sonic series with the rival characters; they have character icons, but are not playable (e.g.: King Boo's icon in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games).

Either he's a boss, or an unlockable player you unlock by beating him. But until we find out, I don't think DK should be in the Playable characters section. B ron 3000 Luigi's face icon. 09:26, 3 February 2018 (EST)

Costumes[edit]

Regarding what we've seen with Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi, would it be wise to point out that this is the first Mario Tennis game since Mario's Tennis where Mario wears tennis gear instead of his normal clothing? Kangaflora (talk) 19:00, 19 January 2018 (EST)

We could note this in a future Characters header once we get more information and the games come out. I definitely say it has a place somewhere. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 19:05, 19 January 2018 (EST)

Nintendo Direct[edit]

Alright, since the new Direct came out today, I'm gonna start adding some content if that's cool with everyone. Also, is it okay to remove the sentence about the Ultra Smash? It looks like it's been replaced with the Zone Shot (as seen in the Direct.)

Moldomre (talk) 19:11, 8 March 2018 (EST)

Yeah, go for it. You don't need to ask :) Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 19:22, 8 March 2018 (EST)
Wait a moment! While so far only Zone Shots and Special Shots have been revealed to be able to break the racket, in the previous screenshots Mario was indeed charging an Ultra Smash, as can be seen by the Chance Shot area below him. So we should just add the Zone Shots and Special Shots for now.--Mister Wu (talk) 21:36, 8 March 2018 (EST)
My opinion is that, the purple "chance shot" markers are completely absent from the game now, having been replaced by the yellow star markers. That is, they just acted as placeholders. And considering there has been no mention of Chance Shots or Ultra Smashes in the most recent Direct (even though it details almost every other type of shot), it seems they may not be in the game at all. For now, I'll remove the part about the Ultra Smash as that could result in false communication, but if evidence crops up later to say that Ultra Smashes are in the game and can break rackets, then we can add that info back in. MarioComix (talk) 21:52, 8 March 2018 (EST)
We cannot make changes based on legitimate opinions though, since we don't know all the final game modes. While it's likely that they have been replaced, that screenshot is an official screenshot. Until we have official confirmation I'd say that we are forced to keep this inconsistency, that in the case of an official replacement will be then mentioned in the Pre-release and unused content section, much like the case of Boom Boom in the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.--Mister Wu (talk) 22:11, 8 March 2018 (EST)
I still think it would be fine to just not mention the Ultra Smash, based on how we've worded the sentence. Since we can say "Some shots, such as the Zone Shot and Special Shot, can break rackets." It means that there could be other shots capable of doing this, and if the Ultra Smash does return we can later write a definitive list. I think it would be better to avoid this miscommunication if possible. MarioComix (talk) 00:26, 9 March 2018 (EST)
Agree with the above. The one sentence that mentions the Ultra Smash assumes that it can break rackets, so if that screenshot is the only evidence that the Ultra Smash is or was ever in the game, we shouldn't make that assumption. I don't see a problem with simply changing that sentence to not mention the Ultra Smash. Dark BonesSig.png 02:10, 9 March 2018 (EST)
That's actually an observation coming from the first official video of the Direct Mini, in which Mario charges an Ultra Smash and breaks Wario's racket. While it's possible that they significantly changed the gameplay in between, it's also possible that the mode shown in the first video was a different one, based on Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. We simply don't have enough material at the moment to know why the gameplay looked different in the first video - it just did.--Mister Wu (talk) 08:47, 9 March 2018 (EST)
I feel that, since we don't know whether the Ultra Smash is returning or not, we shouldn't mention it - we don't know if it's still able to break rackets as we don't know if it's in the game. If they do announce in the future an Ultra Smash mode, then we can always add it back in. MarioComix (talk) 21:55, 9 March 2018 (EST)
Removing text based on official material because of impressions, as legitimate as they may be, is to be avoided. And putting the Ultra Smash in the Pre-release and unused content before the game has been released is quite excessive. This is a page about what has been shown of the game so far, as contradictory as it may be.--Mister Wu (talk) 06:59, 10 March 2018 (EST)
Fair enough then. That last sentence of yours is particularly convincing. MarioComix (talk) 01:01, 12 March 2018 (EDT)

References[edit]

Firstly, I'll say that since Mario's CSS art is hard to discern, we can keep the DDM reference. Next, it's important to note that if we started listing every game that every character artwork comes from, the References list will become hugely cluttered with relatively useless information. For some artwork it can be noted, like the reference to MP6 with Mario's art, since that art is only derived from MP6. Meanwhile, there are other artworks that, since their first usage, have been used in many other games since, to the point where it's more being used as "standard profile artwork" for the character - that is, it's the "official portrait" of the character. An example of this is Toadette's MP7 art, it was her practically her only solo profile artwork until MP10, and so it was the only artwork used to "represent" Toadette. Another example is Daisy's MK7 art, it's been used practically everywhere since, that it's lost connection to MK7 specifically and has become more like the official portrait of Daisy. You can also think of this like characters - the first game that featured Nabbit after NSMBU can call it a reference to NSMBU, but once he'd appeared in more games, they're less specifically calling back to NSMBU in each appearance.

I'd also like to note that for Yoshi and Toadette's art from MP10, the fact that they're reusing the art isn't because they specifically chose artwork from MP10, it's more likely they just thought they were good representations of the characters from when they used them in Ultra Smash and kept it.

Anyway, if you choose to disagree, I won't continue it into an edit war. But I think I at least needed to explain myself.

Tl;dr If we list every game every artwork first appeared in, we'd have too many references. Once certain artworks reappear in multiple games, they're less calling back to the first game, just like when new characters reappear in multiple games. MarioComix (talk) 04:33, 8 April 2018 (EDT)

Alright, I see where you're coming from, and I agree with points that you made. --

Poison Mushroom Orb in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. EditionDigibutterFrancis 05:30, 8 April 2018 (EDT)

Agreed, some artwork is generic enough that it gets used as the characters' stock artwork in games and media. Trying to find the game it originates from is nice, but it's probably better to note that in the summary of the File pages rather than in the References section of each game.--Mister Wu (talk) 10:25, 8 April 2018 (EDT)

I do believe that the cut-off for some of these artworks may be a little arbitrary on my part, but I'm sure we can smooth that over in time. MarioComix (talk) 00:45, 9 April 2018 (EDT)

Personally feel that if an artwork has previously been used in only one game, and said game was over a decade ago, and it's been touched up a little, that might count as a reference, like Wario's Top 100 art being a remade version of his 64 DS art, but that's a very specific scenario. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 00:52, 9 April 2018 (EDT)
I suppose that can be added on the newer game in question? Since that does seem to be a very specific scenario in question. On a side note, the Fortune Street page lists reusing Bowser's 64 DS art has a reference, even though it was actually remade, so I think that could get a pass when the art is indeed pulled from one specific game. MarioComix (talk) 04:44, 9 April 2018 (EDT)

The "MTA" bit at the top is unnecessary[edit]

Nobody's going to confuse Aces for an obscure, canceled CDi game. I think it'd be better to remove that part, to make the page a bit less cluttered. YarnPoochy Yarn Poochy, for use with Yoshi's Woolly World. 21:42, 11 April 2018 (EDT)

Actually, it should stay. Yes, Aces has way more popularity than the CDi game, but that doesn't mean one will search for Mario Takes America by typing MTA. Yes, it is very unlikely. That's why that even though they arrive at Aces, they can go to Mario Takes America without typing in the search box again. And since Mario Takes America is so small compared to Aces, there is no need to have both on MTA because the majority of people searching for MTA are searching for Aces. Besides this, it doesn't really makes it cluttered. Red Yoshi in a construction hat walking Yoshi the SSM (talk) 22:05, 11 April 2018 (EDT)
Originally MTA was a disambiguation page. That made no sense at all, so the only other option is to make a redirect and place a redirect template on this page. That is why the template was made, after all. -YFJ (talk · edits) 16:27, 12 April 2018 (EDT)

Birdo, Diddy Kong, and Paratroopa[edit]

Okay, they were confirmed by the handbag logos... but how do we know what character classes they are? They're listed as All Around, Speedy, and Technical but where did that info come from?
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by 198.144.198.170 (talk).

Apparently it's based on the emblem type, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. Should probably be removed for now. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 21:09, 28 April 2018 (EDT)
If you squint you can see how the emblem shapes determine their playing type - you could also check the emblems on the Nintendo Treehouse Tumblr for the confirmed characters to compare. But, in my opinion, the resolution of the handbag picture is rather low and "when I squinted it looked like so-and-so's emblem" isn't exactly the best rationale for confirming the playing types. MarioComix (talk) 02:28, 29 April 2018 (EDT)

Story Mode information[edit]

This new Japanese overview trailer revealed a lot about the story mode, but I don't want to really type all of it up. Can someone make a section that tells about the story mode? Here's the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-yUwIduGZw --Luigi1234 (talk) 20:41, 14 May 2018 (ET)

Pre-release info[edit]

Just noting this down now for future reference... In the JP overview trailer released May 14, the character headshots in the HUD during matches, specifically for Mario Bros. and Wario Bros., now uses their tennis gear rather than their generic looks. MarioComix (talk) 02:58, 15 May 2018 (EDT)

Pre-launch tournament[edit]

So from what I can gather on the Japanese site, the pre-launch tournament in Japan will have four playable characters (Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser) and that save data from the "demo" can be recognised to obtain Mario's standard "overalls" outfit in the main game. There's also a particularly interesting screenshot showing Dry Bones who seems to be giving the player a tutorial. Any idea where we can fit this information on the page? MarioComix (talk) 03:55, 15 May 2018 (EDT)

New Stage Names[edit]

2 new stage names have been revealed through the IGN vs Kinda Funny Games videos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCziCCMz4bg). They are Snowfall Mountain and Savage Sea (the airship stage). Sexy Bob 13:26, 4th June 2018 (BST)

Thanks, I have added the information to the article. --A sprite of a Flame Chomp from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.TheFlameChomp (talk) 09:11, 4 June 2018 (EDT)

Koopa Troopa is speedy[edit]

I saw a cituation was needed for Koopa's play style https://youtu.be/vX6qUywlnjg?t=1h57m43s Koopa Troopa is stated to be the fastest speedy-type character at this timestamp. I'll look to see if Blooper gets their type mentioned too. If someone could therefore add it in, that would help, I guess. LuckyEmile (talk) 18:31, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

Blooper's type was also revealed, but subtly. You can hear one of the Treehouse members say "Here we have Blooper, a great tricky character", but it's more in the background of the commentary. https://youtu.be/vX6qUywlnjg?t=2h4m20s So Koopa Troopa = speedy, Blooper = Tricky. LuckyEmile (talk) 18:35, 14 June 2018 (EDT)

Character Table[edit]

I'm thinking that once the game is released, we can organise the playable characters into a table to easily list information such as their Trick and Special Shot names, playing type, "unlocking" criteria, etc. If we get more assets we could even add their emblem, and perhaps even list things such as their primary and secondary colours? MarioComix (talk) 03:34, 16 June 2018 (EDT)

That'd be nice. Does anyone want to make a demo table to test this? Artwork of the Toad Brigade from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.Toad and his brigade!Toadette model CTTT.png 20:14, 16 June 2018 (EDT)

no I mean like the table template. the information and images will be abt mario tennis aces obviously
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by 50.69.30.60 (talk).

OH... okay, I know what you're talking about now. No, I think this layout is fine for now. We could explore the Mario Golf: World Tour one, though, if it comes down to that. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 21:29, 17 June 2018 (EDT)
Now that you mention it, a table like the Mario Golf: World Tour characters table was what I had in mind. Especially since the Trick and Special Shots just need to be named, they don't need so much horizontal space. Let me try a demo:

May I suggest we make them 3 wide? That's what the Character Select screen does. We should probably stick to that order as well. Artwork of the Toad Brigade from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.Toad and his brigade!Toadette model CTTT.png 20:38, 18 June 2018 (EDT)

Yeah I like this a lot. Especially since the character colours show up lots in the game, I feel like it makes sense to represent them here as well. As for a table of 3, I understand why we SHOULD do it, but I feel like it'd have the same problem as the first proposal - too much unnecessary space

On one hand, making it 3 wide feels like it could make the characters section take up too much vertical space... BUT I know from the Mario Party: Island Tour boards table fiasco that it's possible a table 4 wide could be hard to view on mobile. So we can do a bit of investigation on it and decide later. MarioComix (talk) 01:58, 19 June 2018 (EDT)

I really like the table you interpreted, I think it looks really cool! Gameboy2345 5:50 PM, 19th June 2018

Also, how about we add an "Appearance on court" or somehing like that? Because each character comes to a court in a different way (Chain Chomp breaks out of a cage, Koopa Troopa slides inside his shell, Spike rolls, etc.), and we have a "Battle Entrance" section in the SSB Infobox, so why not here? Blue Yoshi from Yoshi's Story Yoshi Egg 1990 Red Yoshi holding a Bumber 'Chute 06:13, 19 June 2018 (EDT)

I'd say... no. Those don't have official names and a paragraph of description doesn't seem to fit the matter of fact table. But I still think there'll be more information to add when the game releases. Stats about the properties of each of their shots and the like. I think this is enough for now, I think the main debate is on table 3 wide or 4 wide. Artwork of the Toad Brigade from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.Toad and his brigade!Toadette model CTTT.png 17:55, 19 June 2018 (EDT)

I'll try making two versions of the table here, one 3 wide and one 4 wide, soon. MarioComix (talk) 22:29, 19 June 2018 (EDT)

List of Character Specific Shots[edit]

Okay, I've been scourging content for the last two hours looking for moments where the Toad Commentators name the shots. Here is all I could find.

Peach: Side Trick is Ribbon Fling, Forward Trick is Twirl

Yoshi: Side Trick is Egg Roll, Special Shot is Flying Rainbow

Bowser: Side Trick is Shell Spin, Forward is Dive Bomb, Special Shot is Fire-Breath Barrage

Waluigi: Side Trick is Moonwalk, Forward is Twisted Jump, Special Shot is Showtime

Toad: Side Trick is Toad Roll, Forward is Toad Jump. (Uncreative, I know)

Spike: Side Trick is Flip Fly, Forward is Somersault (Whatever that is), Special is Spike Strike (I THINK. The streamer's UI covered the text that said this, but I could barely make it out to be that. If it's wrong, we can fix it later...?

Rosalina: Side Trick is Satellite Shift, Forward is Galaxy Warp, Special Shot is Star Combo

I know we said that we weren't going to do this till the game is out but...

HERE WE GO ANYWAY. Mostly because it'll be easier for me. I'm getting the game Friday and I'll fill this out and incorporate it along with all the other levels. It's going to be a spree and I want to get as much of this out of the way as I can. Long story short, here we go.

On a side note, we should try to figure out the exact character-colors used in the game, but I think it's fine. And perhaps until renders of Koopa and Blooper are found, I think we should try to at least use some picture for the table. And I think that, by including all the post-launch characters, 3 across fits better. MarioComix (talk) 02:22, 21 June 2018 (EDT)

Toadette character type[edit]

I have noticed when playing matches with toadette that she is strangely similar to a tricky character, her shots curve sharper than peaches even though toadette herself is a technique character, her lunge is also quite big. Does anyone else notice this and should we add it in somewhere? Mariobirdofan02

I know they've mentioned before that even characters within the same playing class have different traits, such as Luigi having better reach than Mario. While it's certainly possible Toadette's shots do curve more, I think some rigorous testing should be done before adding the information. But it's a good observation and I think a good start to finding more information. MarioComix (talk) 02:06, 24 June 2018 (EDT)

Remaining Art Assets (Specifically for this article's image gallery sub page)[edit]

Addressed this on the actual forums, but still needs a mention here - trying to recall, but do any users here have any actual PR contacts with Nintendo of America and/or Nintendo of Europe? Reason I ask this is that it's obviously the weekend after this game's release and we haven't heard news of or ran into any breakthroughs on the remaining promotional art assets for Mario Tennis Aces surfacing from the press end yet. I'm sure that once we finally get our hands on them at some point that some of the pictures on this article's gallery sub page can use a few updates. --M. Delayed Character Table[edit]

I've been thinking... WHY are we not putting up the character table up yet? One week after the release of Mario Tennis Aces, I'm wondering why we're not posting up the table yet. Gameboy2345 (talk) 06:51, 29 June 2018 (EDT)

I would have done so if we had all the names of the Special Shots collected on this talk page, as I'd at least like to have that information full and completed before setting it up. Anyone care to help collect the rest of the names? MarioComix (talk) 20:31, 29 June 2018 (EDT)
We have all of them though. You posted it yourself a few lines up. Artwork of the Toad Brigade from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.Toad and his brigade!Toadette model CTTT.png 15:21, 22 July 2018 (EDT)
I've been rather busy lately... I'll try to get this done tomorrow or by Wednesday. MarioComix (talk) 00:05, 23 July 2018 (EDT)
I could do it for you if I knew what colors to use, image sizes etc... Also, no need to apologize, thanks for doing this.Artwork of the Toad Brigade from Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.Toad and his brigade!Toadette model CTTT.png 01:18, 23 July 2018 (EDT)
So I finally did it, if anyone wants to make adjustments (image size, etc.) feel free to do so. I tried to approximate the in-game character colours as best as I could using the jpg images uploaded from Nintendo Switch Image Share... I also wanted to incorporate each character's secondary colour but couldn't quite do so. Meanwhile, until Blooper, Diddy, Birdo, and Paratroopa get official colours, they'll just borrow that of another character's. MarioComix (talk) 20:35, 23 July 2018 (EDT)

Ratings[edit]

Somebody add the other ratings of this game because the page looks unfinished. Of course I cant add them because somebody locked the damn page for no reason YoshiExploshi (talk) 11:31, 22 August 2018 (EDT)

And the other ratings are? Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:33, 22 August 2018 (EDT)

Look on the gallery page and the Japanese rating is A YoshiExploshi (talk) 11:36, 22 August 2018 (EDT)

Look at the box art YoshiExploshi (talk) 11:36, 22 August 2018 (EDT)

Looks like you just became autoconfirmed and added them yourself as I was looking at the boxes and plugging them in. Beat me to it. The page was protected as it was a new game and those are usually prone to vandalism, though it can probably be unprotected now. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 11:41, 22 August 2018 (EDT)

Why is Temple of Bask Shrine its own section instead of a part of the Bask Ruins one?[edit]

I'm a little curious as to why you put it like that. I mean, yeah, it is the final any% level, but it replaces Temple of Bask for the rest of the game once unlocked (allowing you to enter it only on the options menu). Gold Luigi (talk) 12:09, 28 September 2018 (EDT)

P.S. What happens if you attempt to choose Marina Stadium before beating Bowser Statue?

Create new articles for Boo Hunt, Yoshi's Ring Shot, and Shy Guy Train Tussle[edit]

I've been suggesting to the MarioWiki Discord, that the three co-op challenges should have their own articles. I was trying to do articles for both Boo Hunt and Shy Guy Train Tussle in the MarioWiki:Sandbox, and show it to Alex95 that these could work as articles. For Yoshi's Ring Shot, this could be a new sub-section to Ring Shot or having its own article.
Since the support for Mario Tennis Aces is currently ongoing until June 2019 with an addition of regular Ring Shot and offline Yoshi's Ring Shot in the recent 3.0 update, the article's weight would be heavier. There's also the offline Boo Hunt, which has a co-op and competitive version, not to mention a potential offline Shy Guy Train Tussle in the future. I probably can't create these pages on my own, because of my poor elaboration in paragraphs. I'm just suggesting anyone in the Wiki to create these articles. - Infinite8 12:42, April 16, 2019 (EDT)

We only create articles on these kinds of subjects if they're distinct and stand out among the rest of the game. I oppose creating articles on these game modes until we can establish such a connection. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 12:44, April 16, 2019 (EDT)
This is something I had on my mind for a while. (I was also planning to integrate the rewards in a table exactly as you did.) Make a proposal about splitting these co-op challenges and I'll gladly support it. They are basically minigames, so they should be split; they aren't modes of play to remain on the article. Not to mention I've overloaded the Shy Guy Train Tussle section and it's now heavy enough to have its own page :p -- KOOPA CON CARNE 13:27, April 16, 2019 (EDT)
I honestly don't know. They could work as their own article, but you can make that argument for anything. Looking at them as minigames, like Bye Guy said, would allow them to work within our policy. Especially Shy Guy's.
The Ring Shot article either needs expanded to include other Ring Shots or put into Mario Tennis Open's article, I don't know why it's only focusing on Open. If it's expanded, Yoshi's Ring Shot would fit there, but if not, then I don't know what to think here. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 13:45, April 16, 2019 (EDT)
None of these look like strong stand-alone articles to me, honestly and can easily fit into the Mario Tennis Aces article. I do agree with Ring Shot being expanded to incorporate more than just Mario Tennis Open though. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 15:47, April 16, 2019 (EDT)
After a second look and then thinking about how other Mario Tennis games deal with minigame articles, I say it doesn't hurt to have these artciles stand alone like Super Mario Tennis and Artist On the Court. I wouldn't mind separate articles being created for them as they look like they're minigames in the same manner. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 15:52, April 16, 2019 (EDT)
OK, though keep in mind that if they're treated as game modes, they don't usually receive separate articles. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 16:05, April 16, 2019 (EDT)

Outdated Alternate Colors/Costumes Obtainable Methods[edit]

Some information about more recent online tournaments and alternate costumes/colors obtainable from them isn't listed. Should it be updated? Ratboy Jr. (talk) 23:52, June 3, 2020 (EDT)

Giltch?[edit]

I used to play this game, but quit because of this potential glitch. Mario would randomly charge something up, backflip, sweep his racket in a circle, & repeat 2 & 3 until I stopped playing. Is this a game glitch, a console glitch, or something like that one SM64 glitch that some people are saying was caused by a rogue space particle? Please help. Also, if you have any time, please answer my SM64 question and my SMA4 question. SONIC123CDMANIA+&K(B&ATSA) (talk) 14:31, March 30, 2023 (CST)
