Plot synopsis[edit]

Knuckles hands the Hooligan brothers their share of the loot in the Saturday Supercade episode "Gorilla Gangster"
Knuckles hands the Hooligan brothers their share of the loot

Mario and Pauline are in pursuit of Donkey Kong, warning everyone as he makes his way into a food market. As everyone runs for cover, Mario and Pauline continue their chase, believing they are finally about to catch him. Donkey Kong merely laughs and retreats to a grapefruit cart, as he proceeds to pick one up and chuckle. He then tips the cart over, causing the grapefruits to slow down Pauline and Mario, causing the latter to crash into a cart. At this, Donkey Kong enters an office to hide, just at the conclusion of a gangster meeting, where Knuckles Darklings gives the Hooligan brothers their share of the loot from their recent bank heist. After the brothers leave, however, Knuckles, reveals to his partner, Mugsy, that they have fallen for their swindle, still having all of the cash while have given the Hooligan brothers a case full of dirty socks. They now plan to skip town before the brothers find out that they double-crossed them, but Mugsy mentions that he needs someone to take his place at the speakeasy club tonight, saying that, when the Hooligan brothers come after him, they will catch the wrong person.

As Knuckles explains that no one would be gullible enough to do such a thing, saying that it is too dangerous, they hear Donkey Kong eating a banana. Mugsy mentions that he is the "dumb ape who's [going] take his place," and he offers him a bunch of bananas, asking him if he would like as many as he can eat. Donkey Kong quickly accepts, and he tells him that all he needs to do is to dress up as him. Donkey Kong pulls off his suit and attempts to dress up, but he tells him that it will be done tonight. That night, Donkey Kong is dressed as Mugsy, and is driven via limousine to the club by Knuckles as Mugsy stays behind. Before he is driven away, however, Donkey Kong brings two bunches of bananas with him. Before they depart, Mugsy reminds him to take on his role for the entire night. Donkey Kong kisses him before he is driven away, leaving a trail of banana peels behind the car along the way.

The Hooligan brothers prepare to threaten Donkey Kong

At this time, Mario and Pauline wander in search of Donkey Kong or his trail, with the latter mentioning that, sometimes, she believes that they are never going to get Donkey Kong back to the circus. Mario reassures her, saying that "[they'll] stumble onto his trail again." He then slips on the trail of banana peels Donkey left behind, and he and Pauline decide to follow it. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong and Knuckles arrive at the club, as the Hooligan brothers who had been swindled take notice and plan to attack him, forcing him to cough up their share. At the hat check, Donkey Kong gives his several large hats to the receptionist, with Knuckles mentioning that, since he could not figure which hat to wear, he decided to wear them on. When a receptionist asks if they have a reservation, Donkey Kong stutters, though when he is told he may not get in without one, he threatens the waiter for a table by shaking him.

They are then led to a table, where Donkey Kong takes the flower out of the vase provided and eats it. When the waitress arrives at their table, asking if he wants tulips and fries, she is embraced by Donkey Kong, who quickly releases her when she threatens to hit him. After he orders many items on the menu, she takes his order and leaves in disgust, saying that "they got all kinds of apes in this joint." The Hooligan brothers take this opportunity to prepare to threaten him, just as Mario and Pauline show up with a net. Though Mario claims he is not fooled by a disguise, he captures Knuckles instead. Mario releases him after Pauline points out his mistake, with Knuckles then fleeing the scene. Now between Mario and Pauline and the Hooligan brothers, Donkey Kong refuses to let up. Mario swings his net, misses, and launches the gangsters into the overhead chandelier. When Pauline asks Donkey Kong nicely to return to the circus, he becomes seduced and takes off with her.

Mario follows suit, but trips and becomes trapped in his own net, with mentioning that he wants a refund on the net. He then chases Donkey Kong up a flight of stairs, with him hoping to corner him. Finding a pile of pickle barrels at the top, Donkey Kong releases Pauline and tosses barrels down toward Mario, in reference to the original Donkey Kong. Mario hops over the first two in quick succession, but hammers the last one, causing him to slide to the bottom from the spilled pickle juice. Meanwhile, the brothers believe Mario and Pauline have been betrayed as well and decide to capture Pauline, who they mistake to be Mugsy's girlfriend, and plan to use her as a ransom in exchange for the loot. Having made it back to the top of the stairwell, Mario grabs a fire hose and inadvertently traps both of them in it, allowing Pauline to escape. However, this allows the gangsters to easily seize Pauline and run off with her. Mario berates Donkey Kong for causing this, saying that he hopes he is "satisfied," causing the latter to cry. Mario then retracts his scolding, saying that he did not intend to allow the Hooligan brothers capture Pauline, but mentions that they have to follow them before they can harm her. Donkey Kong breaks them both out of the rope and rips off his attire, before grabbing Mario and following the brothers.

The Hooligan brothers arrive at an airport, along with Mario and Donkey Kong. The brothers rush to a jet, but are beaten to it by Mugsy and Knuckles, who start taxiing before they can negotiate. As they are distracted, Mario lassoes and rescues Pauline. The brothers decide not to take her back and instead run after and jump into the taxiing jet, with Mugsy telling them to get off the jet. As the criminals tussle, Donkey Kong is convinced by Pauline to stop the plane from taking off by grabbing its tail, with her informing him that they criminals. This causes the plane to snap in half. Mario and Pauline and Donkey Kong, disguised as a pilot and flight attendants respectively, trick them into boarding a different plane and sliding down one of its evacuation slides. All of the gangsters are trapped onto a luggage cart, as Mario uses a biplane to blow the sail, taking them into the luggage hold and trapping them all in suitcases. All five of them are removed and arrested, much to their dismay. With the criminals captured, Mario makes another attempt to capture Donkey Kong, though he flees on a luggage cart, reciting his name as he rides into the sunrise.

Characters[edit]

Animation and continuity errors[edit]

  • After Mugsy mentions that Donkey Kong will take his place at the club tonight, Donkey Kong is incorrectly layered, resulting in him sitting on thin air.
  • After Donkey Kong eats the flower, the vase it was in disappears.
  • When the waitress writes down Donkey Kong's order, her apron disappears.
  • When the short Hooligan brother suggests that "Mugsy" must have tricked Mario as well, he speaks through the burly brother's mouth.
  • When the Hooligan brothers decide to kidnap Pauline to convince "Mugsy" to give them their money, the glove-wearing Hooligan brother's gloves are missing. This also occurs after Mario saves Pauline.
    • In the second shot, Knuckles replaces one of the Hooligan brothers, even though he is on the plane with Mugsy at the time.
    • Additionally, in the second shot, as Pauline yells for them to let her go, her mouth does not move.

Notes[edit]

  • Donkey Kong wearing many hats when arriving at the club may be a reference to "man of many hats," an idiom referring to a person who has many tasks or duties.
  • An audio clip of Mario saying, "I'm coming to save you, Pauline!" from the episode "Mississippi Madness" is reused when he launches himself from a palm tree.
