Fires[1] (also known as fireballs,[2][3][4] firefoxes,[5] and foxfires[6]) are enemies that debuted in the 100m level of Donkey Kong. In most versions, they are depicted as a slightly larger variant of the Fireball enemy that appears in other levels.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong[edit]

Sprite of a Fire from Donkey Kong (Arcade) Blue Fire

Fires make their first appearance in the original Donkey Kong as enemies. They exclusively appear in 100 m, and as they are slightly larger than the Fireball enemies that appear in other levels, they are more difficult to jump over. Fires can climb ladders, but cannot reverse directions during the climb. If Mario jumps over a Fire, he receives points. If a bolt is removed while a Fire is on top of it, the enemy will become stuck over the gap. This will allow Mario to safely jump over the enemy repeatedly. Like Fireballs, the only way to destroy them is with a hammer. Picking up a hammer causes the Fires to turn blue. In the arcade version, there can only be five or fewer Fires on the screen at the same time, lowered to four in the Nintendo Entertainment System port of the game.

Fire (compressed)

In the Game Boy version, Fires appear in the Start, which is a recreation of the arcade original.

Fireballs retain their role of enemies in Donkey Kong 64's built-in port of the Donkey Kong arcade game.

Family BASIC[edit]

In the Family BASIC accessory to the Family Computer, Fires are programmable sprites. In Family BASIC V3, they are enemies in a space shooter minigame.

NES Remix series[edit]

Fires appear in Donkey Kong-related challenges in NES Remix, NES Remix Pack, and Ultimate NES Remix.

Fire with cute eyes

The Fire from the GB version of Donkey has a marshmallow-like body and cute eyes. But if you are careless and touch it, you will be burned to a crisp. It is difficult to jump over it, so use a hammer to knock it down.
