Don't Fear the Spear is the fifth level of World 3 found in Yoshi's New Island. This level's playable Yoshi is the Purple Yoshi, and features the exclusive appearances of Spear Guys, Dancing Spear Guys, and Petal Guys. Poochy additionally debuts in this level, a helpful dog-like creature that can help Yoshis cross dangerous terrain and retrieve items. The music used in this level, STAGE_YARIHOO, is exclusive to this level in the game and is named after the Japanese name for Spear Guys.
Layout[edit]
Purple Yoshi starts the level in a jungle-like area with an Egg Block and a Spear Guy. Accessing where this Spear Guy is causes coins to spawn above, including Red Coins. At the end of the flower patches below the two patrolling Spear Guys is a hidden Winged Cloud that spawns stars upon activation and on top, the coin trail leads to a Winged Cloud that spawns an 1-UP. Past the level's first Smiley Flower hidden in a hidden Winged Cloud is a solo Dancing Spear Guy, which contains a hidden Winged Cloud that spawns stars when Purple Yoshi walks through its area. Soon after, the player reaches an area with Petal Guys masked as flowers, as well as more Dancing Spear Guys; an area below the platforms past the level's second Smiley Flower spawns coins when Purple Yoshi accesses it.
A blue door then leads to a room where Poochy is first found and a Message Block informing players about him, where he must be used to break through breakable blocks to get a key and open a locked door. Just before the locked door is a hidden Winged Cloud that spawns stars. It leads to the Checkpoint Ring, an Egg Plant, and another area with Flatbed Ferries that take Purple Yoshi through the level while it needs to avoid Spear Guys on top of platforms. The first green Flatbed Ferry leads Purple Yoshi to the right ledges, and to the far right is a hidden area behind a wall containing coins and red coins. The second, diagonally moving Flatbed Ferry can take Purple Yoshi to a Warp Pipe that leads to a small bonus room where Purple Yoshi needs to defeat all Spear Guys to get the Smiley Flower. Past the green Spin-Lift with two Spear Guys on it to the upper left behind the foreground wall is a pink door that leads Purple Yoshi into a room where it can turn into Super Yoshi via a Yoshi Star. Shortly after the bonus room are a few more Dancing Spear Guys and a green Paddle Platform used to reach the Goal Ring. Below the cliff with the Goal Ring is a hidden Winged Cloud that spawns stars.
Smiley Flowers[edit]
Smiley Flower 2: Underneath the platform past the flower bed with Petal Guys and a yellow Dancing Spear Guy. Purple Yoshi needs to bounce an egg off the wall to retrieve it.
