Awazon River is main location of the game Virtual Boy Wario Land, though little of it is seen in the game. The game mainly takes place underneath the Awazon River. Wario finds himself underneath the Awazon River after stumbling upon a trap door after following three Mask-Guys taking treasure behind a waterfall.

The Awazon river basin is the main setting of Virtual Boy Wario Land, where Wario travelled prior to the events of the game to take a vacation. However, only a small area within it is seen, in the intro and ending cutscenes, since the game primarily takes place deep underground. Its name refers to the Amazon River, but the M is flipped to a W, similar to Wario's and Mario's names.

The story is initiated here when Wario, after being woken from his nap by a beaver, spots three Mask-Guys carrying treasure chests into a cave behind a nearby waterfall, referred to as the Aldegara Waterfall in the manual. Wario manages to catch up with the Mask-Guys, only to come across a large vault where the treasure chests were stored. Before Wario is able to open it, however, the ground beneath him crumbles away, sending him plummeting to the bottom of a series of underground caverns. He is eventually able to escape after defeating the final boss, Demon Head. Afterwards, Wario decides to leave the river basin, with his mode of transportation depending on the amount of treasure and coins collected.
Entry from Wario's Journal
*I, Wario, have an interesting story to tell. One day during my vacation in the Awazon river basin, I landed my trusty seaplane, Bulldog, and decide to relax in the shadow of the beautiful Aldegara Waterfall. While basking in the sun, I spied some strange creatures with masks entering the waterfall. This piqued my interest!

*I hurried over and followed them into the waterfall. Behind the falls there was a large cave, and in the back of the cave … there was a vault filled with a glorious mountain of treasure!!

*Some of the masked creatures jumped me, but I quickly overcame them. "This treasure is all mine now!", I thought to myself and rushed in to collect the loot. Suddenly, the floor collapsed and I fell!
