Template:Foreign names

This template organizes the foreign names of article subjects and their respective meanings into a table. Note that this template is only for listing names that have appeared in official localizations in other languages. Running the English name through Google Translate or making up your own translation is not acceptable. A citation must be provided for every foreign name.

Usage

This template should be placed in the "Names in other languages" section of an article. If accompanied by {{internal names}}, then "Internal names" and "Names in other languages" should be made subsections of an "Additional names" section. The syntax is as follows:

Parameters

A list of language codes can be found below. Every language code parameter supports these accompanying parameters:

• Code + R (for Romanized)
• Code + M (for Meaning)
• Code + C (for Citation)
• Code + N (for Note)

In addition, each language can be split into multiple sets of parameters (e.g. Jap2, Jap2R, Jap2M, Jap2C, Jap2N).

When a single language has multiple variations of a name, the notes section is used to provide some brief context which differentiates them (e.g. the game where each appears). Citations should provide more detail than notes, such as referencing a URL, quote, internal file, or page number. Notes are not a substitute for detailed citations, which are required whether a note is present or not. If a note starts getting too detailed/verbose, then consider moving some or all of that information to the citation, where possible.

Citations

Add a citations=no parameter to all instances of the template on an article to disable the citation checks and categorization, if needed.

Do not use the {{ref needed}} tag within the foreign names template. Missing citations are tracked by the template itself.

Meaning guidelines

Names with their meaning in parentheses must be formatted the following way: name ("meaning")

The meaning is self-explanatory

Omit the M parameter to display a dash if the foreign name is the same as the English name, or it can be understood in English.
