The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, better known as F.L.U.D.D. or FLUDD and pronounced "Flood", is a water pack from Super Mario Sunshine. It seems that F.L.U.D.D. is Mario's equivalent of Luigi's Poltergust 3000.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Sunshine

In Super Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D can be used by Mario to spray water, by pressing the R button. With this, Mario can perform many tasks from enhancing his acrobatics to cleaning off Goop. Mario first finds F.L.U.D.D on the ground near a strange salesman. He has access to F.L.U.D.D throughout the game; however, it is taken by Shadow Mario when Mario enters a Secret Level that hasn't been cleared, or in episode 3 of Pianta Village. In the latter, Mario retrieves F.L.U.D.D after finding a way around the fiery goop which covers the level.

F.L.U.D.D and its nozzles were invented by E. Gadd. F.L.U.D.D seems to possess artificial intelligence, and can feel emotions such as joy and fear. Because of this, the water pack acts as Mario's sidekick and guide during his stay on Isle Delfino, giving Mario handy advice.

After Mario's battle with Bowser, F.L.U.D.D malfunctions, asking Mario if it was of assistance before it shuts off completely. However, this doesn't spell the end for the sentient water pack; The Toads who came along on the vacation fixed it up and returned it to Mario. Right as the game ends, F.L.U.D.D happily exclaims, "The vacation starts now."

Super Mario Galaxy

In Super Mario Galaxy, large objects resembling F.L.U.D.D.'s nozzles appear in some galaxies - namely, the Honeyhive Galaxy and Deep Dark Galaxy. As their names would suggest, Water Shooters fire water, and Fire Shooters produce fire. Nozzles are also used in the Deep Dark Galaxy to transport Mario between planets when he pops inside a bubble.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

The shooters from the prequel re-appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2 with the same functions. There is also another variant of shooters, which shoot balls of electricity.

Mario Tennis series

Several F.L.U.D.D. heads appear in Mario Power Tennis; these heads are used to clear away the Goop that can accumulate in the Delfino Plaza Court. Also, in the mini-game Tic-Tac-Glow, the player must use balls of water shot by several F.L.U.D.D. heads to clear-away Goop in a tic-tac-toe like game.

WarioWare series

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

F.L.U.D.D. makes a cameo appearance in WarioWare: Smooth Moves in a microgame where it helps Mario put out a fire in a building.

Mario Kart series

F.L.U.D.D. is a special move that Mario can use in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When Mario uses the move, he will put F.L.U.D.D. on his back and douse his enemies with water.

The attack has no effect on the opponents' damage percentages whatsoever. However, it can still have a lot of benefit to Mario, as the water can blast foes great distances, possibly resulting in a KO. F.L.U.D.D. can also be charged before use, resulting in a more powerful stream of water.

In Subspace Emissary there are enemies called Borboras that have Fluud like head. These ememies shoot Wind.

Nozzles

In Super Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D is capable of equipping two Nozzles at a time, one of which must be the Squirt Nozzle. The others can be changed by breaking open Nozzle Boxes located at various points in Delfino Plaza and all of its surrounding areas. To change between Nozzles equipped, the player should press the X button. All the nozzles are controlled with the R button.

  • Squirt Nozzle – The basic Nozzle, which allows Mario to shoot water at enemies. If the R button is held down lightly, Mario will run while squirting in the direction he's facing. If the R button is held all the way down, Mario will stop and squirt while the player can use the analog stick to aim. This is the only nozzle that can be used in first-person mode.
  • Hover Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to hover in the air for a short time. Hover Nozzles are located inside blue Nozzle Boxes. Mario starts every area with this alternate nozzle equipped.
  • Rocket Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to shoot up high into the air after charging up for a brief amount of time. However, he will fall back down without hovering. Rocket Nozzles can be found inside red Nozzle Boxes.
  • Turbo Nozzle – This Nozzle allows Mario to run at an extremely fast speed on land, or swim at an extremely fast speed in water or under the water. However, turning is difficult when using this Nozzle on land. Turbo Nozzles can be found inside gray Nozzle Boxes. However, this nozzle makes the least appearances, only appearing in three main areas, and Delfino Plaza. It also uses up a large amount of water rapidly outside of water areas. It also helps Mario break through orange and green doors.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Trophy

Type Image Description

Since F.L.U.D.D. is able to converse with Mario, it's believed to be equipped with some kind of artificial intelligence. With special nozzles, F.L.U.D.D. can be used like a jet pack to reach high places or for high-speed swimming.

Trivia

  • When F.L.U.D.D. scans Mario in Super Mario Sunshine, a little window in the bottom left corner shows short gameplay clips of various Mario games, such as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, and Super Mario 64. After Bowser is beaten at the end and F.L.U.D.D. is looking at Mario, the window shows "Game Over" from Mario Bros..
  • F.L.U.D.D.'s name is a play on the word "flood", meaning a large mass of water that often causes chaos in a public area. It is also possible that his name is derived from that of Robert Fludd, an inventor who designed (but never actually made or released) many water pumps.
  • In the beta version of Super Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D. also had another nozzle, which was a water gun, but it was removed because some players thought it was too violent.
