Make a disambiguation page for now?

While various news sites tend to refer the new Mario Kart for Switch 2 as Mario Kart 9, it can be argued that Mario Kart Tour is Mario Kart 9, since its courses are included in the Booster Course Pass (if it didn't count as an official entry, its courses would not be included in there, much like how the Mario Kart Arcade GP games don't count as official entries either. So I think it's best to make this a disambiguation page for now until further information. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 14:33, January 16, 2025 (EST)

let's be really pedantic, Mario Kart 7 is the ninth game made overall as well, so that could also be a point made here. - YoYo Yoshi Head (light blue) from Mario Kart: Super Circuit (Talk) 11:41, January 18, 2025 (EST)
We don't know what was Nintendo cooking when they decided to name the 3DS installment "Mario Kart 7". Mario It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 13:54, January 18, 2025 (EST)
At the very least I think this page being a redirect to the new Mario Kart title should be considered misinformation. In an official capacity, as far as I'm aware at least, there has never been a separation between Mario Kart Tour and the other "main" titles, it really doesn't make sense to act otherwise just because it's often reffered to as such unofficially. I created one now, Mario Kart 9 (disambiguation). I added every entry that seemed reasonable to me to include, but feel free to make changes if you wish (although if you're specifically planning to rearrange the order, I'd appreciate having a very good reason for doing so). Remove Mario Kart 7

While in certain senses, Mario Kart 7 is the ninth Mario Kart game, its title defines it as being the 7th Mario Kart game. People looking for the 9th Mario Kart game have almost certainly dismissed Mario Kart 7 as that game. Since a disambiguation page is meant to direct the user to the page(s) they want to see, Mario Kart 7 should be excluded. Salmancer (talk) 14:02, January 19, 2025 (EST)

I was really just trying to cover all bases within a certain reason. I don't personally disagree with its removal nor that of Arcade GP VR, so as far as I'm concerned feel free to do so. Polley001 (talk) 14:06, January 19, 2025 (EST)
I agree with Polley001; there are enough variables that multiple games could qualify as the ninth Mario Kart title. That being said, I also feel this disambiguation page is unnecessary with the fact that these factors could also be applied to other games and their positions. One could say that Mario Kart Wii is not "Mario Kart 6" because two arcade games came before it. I kinda feel this page exists because we're jumping some hoops just to justify it's existence as a disambiguation page when realistically, it should just redirect to Tour because Nintendo has officially stated it to be a part of the mainline series when they announced the Booster Course Pass. That's just my opinion, however. Sprite of Yoshi's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tails777 Talk to me!Sprite of Daisy's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
If it were up to me it would either redirect to Tour or simply not exist at all, this disambiguation page to me is just a compromise to avoid an endless back and forth of changing which page Mario Kart 9 redirects to (and even if it's deleted, it seems likely someone would just recreate it again unless some kind of lock can be implemented). I'd also be down for deleting it overall if it comes to that. This whole thing is just a "One person could consider this vs. one person could consider that" situation. Super Mario Bros. 4 doesn't have a disambiguation page, it just leads straight to Super Mario World, despite Super Mario Land being the fourth game in the series or for those who'd also consider Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels being the second game, leading to Super Mario World technically being the sixth game. Case in point, this particular situation isn't being done elsewhere and I don't see why this needs to be a special case. Sprite of Yoshi's stock icon from Super Smash Bros. There's a lot of disagreement as to what would be considered 9, so I'm not for attributing this to one single subject, also because it could be misleading (calling Tour 9 when it's possible the Switch 2 game will be 9, or calling the Switch 2 game 9 while disregarding Tour which Nintendo seems to imply is a mainline game). But since people will be using this as a search term anyway, I'd say we can keep it as a disambiguation but at the very least keep it to just Tour and the Switch 2 game since those are the most common interpretations (also, calling GP VR 9 while ignoring the other GP games doesn't make sense, and 7 being 9 is just too unlikely for obvious reasons), and I can see more potential disagreements from people on what goes on the list because they're including and excluding certain games; but honestly I wouldn't object to just deleting the whole thing altogether either to save all the trouble and just wait until we have more information.
Also @Tails777 SMB4 redirects to World because that's its official name in Japan. Wolf Link costume pose in Super Mario Maker Mario JC 23:35, January 19, 2025 (EST)

Please, be real

You seriously can't call Mario Kart Tour Mario Kart 9 if it is clearly gonna be the new name of the Nintendo Switch 2. ˜˜˜˜Sunny12345

None of us have any idea what they're going to call it yet. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 21:55, January 23, 2025 (EST)
You and I have substantially different definitions of "clearly". I'm assuming you must work for Nintendo then if its so clear to you. - YoYo Yoshi Head (light blue) from Mario Kart: Super Circuit (Talk) 04:26, January 25, 2025 (EST)
If Mario Kart Tour is not the ninth Mario Kart, it kind of brings into question why content from Tour (Pauline, Kamek and Peachette, plus all of its race courses minus Piranha Plant Pipeline are included in the Booster Course Pass and regarded as "past content", whereas nothing from the Arcade GP subseries is being counted anywhere in the franchise (e.g. Mario Kart 7 isn't called Mario Kart 9 and Mario Kart 8 isn't called Mario Kart 11, the Thunder Cloud is listed as a new item in Mario Kart Wii despite appearing prior in Mario Kart Arcade GP and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2). While the new Mario Kart is most likely to be the first traditional Mario Kart we've had in years and would make sense to be called Mario Kart 9, the mere fact that Tour is being counted as an official entry means we have to wait and see what Nintendo will call this entry or which they consider this entry as. Just to add to this, the reason fans invented the idea of a "Mario kart mainline" was because of speculation whether or not Tour's courses would become retro courses in subsequent games. It's pretty apparent now that it's the case considering the fact it's literally happened. - YoYo Yoshi Head (light blue) from Mario Kart: Super Circuit (Talk) 06:40, March 8, 2025 (EST)
??!? Wasn't it because of the Arcade GP games' courses not becomung retro courses in subsequent games, and the Arcade GP titles not being included when the name for Mario Kart 7 was announced and explained? I mean, it's also true that there was speculation on whether or not Tour courses would return in subsequent Mario Karts as well, but I'm 100% certain that the idea of a Mario Kart mainline already existed long before Tour was even conceived.
But yeah, Tour courses have already become retros near-immediately while the game was still being supported, when we still have yet to see Arcade GP retros even nearly 20 years after the first Arcade GP game. ArendLogoTransparent.pngrend (talk) (edits) 07:12, March 8, 2025 (EST)
