Shroob saucer
- “What's that? Control this... ...and send those Shroob saucers to obliteration?”
- —Stuffwell, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Shroob saucers, also referred to as UFOs, are the Shroobs' alien spaceships that they use for travel from place to place in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. These spaceships are small, but they can fire powerful energy bolts that can turn people into Shroob mushrooms and deal devastating damage to buildings, and they also have tractor beams that are used to abduct Toads. They resemble the standard cartoony design of an alien flying saucer, but instead of a glass dome in the middle where the ship's pilot would be, the top of the Shroob's head can be seen poking out of the saucer, with their red eyes visible in a hole on the side.
Shroob saucers are powered by Toad energy, known as vim. The vim is sucked out of captured Toads by the trees of Toadwood Forest and pumped to the Vim Factory, where Swiggler drinks it and expels it via a thin tube as fuel for the Shroob saucers.
Shroob saucers are first seen in the intro of the game, where they attack Peach's Castle of the past. Then, when adult Mario and Luigi arrive in Hollijolli Village, they see Shroob saucers attacking the village, damaging the houses and abducting Toads. Mario and Luigi then have to fight an impossible battle against three Shroobs that features a Shroob saucer with a timer that counts down from three turns. When the countdown reaches zero, the saucer drops a massive pink energy ball on Mario and Luigi, which knocks them out, though they are shortly rescued by their younger counterparts. During the battle, one of the Shroobs uses a device strongly resembling a Nintendo DS to summon the saucer with the countdown timer. This same kind of saucer also appears much later in the game in the second half of the Elder Shrooboid battle, this time counting down from four turns, but it can be hit with a spiked ball to reset the countdown. During the battle against Swiggler in the Vim Factory, two Shroob saucers appear whenever Swiggler drinks from its vim-filled glass without any mushrooms added to it. The two saucers absorb the vim and then fire Bullet Bill-shaped pink energy blasts at the Mario Bros. Shroob saucers also appear in battles with Blazing Shroobs, where they light firecrackers using the Blazing Shroob's flames and fire the explosives at the Bros. They can be knocked out of battle by jumping onto one of the Blazing Shroobs while they are aflame; this will cause the brother to jump up in pain and inadvertently collide with the saucer, knocking it away. If a Blazing Shroob is defeated, the Shroob saucer above it will shift and hover over to one of the remaining Blazing Shroobs; if all Blazing Shroobs are defeated, it will leave the battlefield.
In the Yoshi Village, the Shroobs use energy blasts from their Shroob saucers to make Yoob giant. Miniature Shroob saucers can be found in Yoob's Belly, being remotely controlled by RC Shroobers.
Princess Shroob has her own, much larger Shroob saucer called the Shroob Mother Ship. Unlike with the normal Shroob saucers, the interior is seen when Mario and Luigi explore the ship. It is filled with Shroobs who seem to be bathing in some sort of green goo, possibly vim. The bros. enter and pilot two other large saucers at Shroob Castle, one resembling the Shroob Mother Ship and a second gray one with a unique design. Princess Shroob's levitating throne that she uses in her boss battle also somewhat resembles a Shroob saucer.
