Donkey Kong is a VFD game based on the arcade original. It was developed and released by Coleco in 1982 as part of the company's tabletop arcade games series.[2]

Controls[edit]

Like with the arcade game, the player moves Mario by using a control stick and a jump button.

Gameplay[edit]

Ramps screen

The first stage, the Ramps screen,[2] involves Mario climbing ladders and dodging barrels thrown by Donkey Kong, who is on an electric fence, as he makes his way up to his girlfriend. Mario can run under the fence but cannot jump through it. There is a hammer on the third floor, but it only awards points.

The second and last stage, the Rivets screen,[2] involves Mario having to remove ten rivets by walking over them, all while avoiding fireballs. Mario can jump over gaps left by removing rivets. He can collect the hammer and his girlfriend's hat, purse, or umbrella for extra points.

There is a Time Limit, and the player begins with three lives. There are eight difficulty levels, and removing the final rivet restarts the game at a higher difficulty. At max difficulty, the game continues to repeat until all lives are lost. The highest score is saved by the game.
