The Nintendo Super Tour '92 (also formatted as Nintendo Super Tour) was a touring event in France and in the North of Spain that ran from 1992 to early 1993. It was organized by Nintendo France and the second part was sponsored by Player One and NRJ. The aim of the tour was to promote the release of the Super Nintendo and to show its capabilities for families and kids without being drowned by advertising hype[1]. This event is mostly inspired from the United States' model[2] and was in direct competition with Sega who organized the Sega Euro Challenge 92[3].

Inside the event, there was a competition called the Open Nintendo open to public under registration at every stops enabling winners to participate to the final with a trip of 2 weeks in Las Vegas as a first place award.[4][5]

This was the video games' biggest championship through Europe in 1992 with over 800,000 attendees[6][3].

Organization

The Nintendo Super Tour was divided into 2 parts in 1992. The first take place from winter to spring in several cities and the second was in summer through coastlines. In total, the tour had 107 stops[6] .

The special feature of this tour was that it take place in trucks which unfolded to reveal gaming stations. 65 tonne of material were used[6]. Trucks were choosed, organized and drived by Gilles Barthélémy and Stephan Brissaud, their choice was strategic because of the facility for trucks to cross several cities in a short time.

Trucks featured stations equipped from recent consoles, the Super Nintendo and the Game Boy. During the first part of the event, there were 80 stations[6] and 72 during the second with a 15-minute rotation per person[7]. On these stations, players can test a lot of titles like Super Mario Bros. 3 or The Legend of Zelda (video game) and demos. 15 news titles were presented during this event.

The inauguration of the Nintendo Super Tour take place in the Champ de Mars[3], then it spread out from march to june, then to july from august.

For the Open Nintendo, registration can be simply done on site, but we could securing our places using a coupon to cut out and fill from a Club Nintendo's issue.
For tournaments itself, its took place on special stand per group of 10 :

  • First one was a sequence of 3 games with 3 different goals in 7 minutes (when a goal was completed, the programmed cartridge automatically moved on to the next game) : Super Mario Bros. 3 where we must collecting 50 coins then do 250,000 point at Pin Bot and finally make the biggest score in Dr. Mario before time runs out.[5]
  • Summer tournament was focused on F-Zero : We had to make the best time-score on Mute-City with the Fire Stingray on Knight League.
