Since the Glitches section only has one glitch (Minus World), and there is an article for this glitch, shouldn't we just remove the glitch section in the article entirely? Waluigi Freak 99 17:49, 9 September 2006 (EDT)

Or put a link to the Minus World and take out the section...whatever suits you. -- Son of Suns

Enemies section

Shouldn't there be some sort of section for the enemies in the game? After all, the instruction booklet included such a section, and it would seem fitting here. --Alan Redgown56 15:09, 24 December 2006 (EST)

Disambuigation

This page should be a Disambuigation for SMB, Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. (movie). Comments?

Max2 (talk)

No. This is by far the most common use of the phrase "Super Mario Bros.", while the meanings of things like Yoshi's Island all are used commonly enough. The movie can be linked to with {{about}} or something similar, and Mario Bros. (talking about the game?) has a quite different name. - Cobold (talk · contribs) 16:52, 8 August 2007 (EDT)

no! The brothers themselves, who are called the Super Mario Brothers many times! Max2 (talk)

Max has a good point. I would be in favor of the move of this page to Super Mario Bros. (game) and linking the disambiguation page to the Mario and Luigi articles. Oh, and for the record, plenty of casual gamers call this game Mario Bros. I know we cater to the hardcore crowd, but it would prevent any confusion. Stumpers!

List of Levels

In the "list of levels" section, there are several links to non-existent pages. If I make these pages existent, does that count as SMWikifying? Or does it count as helping this page in any way? — Stooben Rooben Either way, I'm making the pages.

I don't know, but I have another question: Why is the underwater area in 8-4 secret? I think you have to go/swim through it to reach Bowser, don't you? I don't know how it is in 5-2, though. And BTW, sorry if that sounds impolite (I don't hope so), but your world pages sound a li'l bit opiniated. (e.g., the word "oddly" or considering Hammer Bro. as the most hated enemy in the game) :( See Talk:Main Page#Opiniated Language. --PaperStriker 09:28, 17 January 2008 (EST)

No, that's not impolite! I'm still learning what not to do around here. As for 8-4, it isn't secret and I'm changing that on this page, and leaving it out when I make the article. I'll change the opinionated words though...you're kind of right on that. Thanks. — Stooben Rooben *goes to fix boo-boos*

Trivia section

One of the two trivias of SMB is that "contrary to popular belief, it is possible for the player to jump over the flag in certain levels of the game," or something. This is not the first place I've heard this rumor, but for some reason there are no pictures of this trick, or list of levels that you can jump over the flag. Has anyone been able to do it, cuz if not we might have to consider deleting this trivia. Glitchmansig.PNG Glitchman (talk · contribs) Glitchmansig.PNG

It is possible in The Lost Levels because of the new spring-boards there, but in Super Mario Bros. it is only a glitch and can go to the List of Glitches page with further elaboration. - Cobold (talk · contribs) 16:49, 25 January 2008 (EST)

Gallery Images

Ok, why is there artwork in the gallery that isn't even from the game this article is about? The Gravitator 02:00, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

I've removed some of the artwork that was obviously from a different game. Thanks for noticing, though. Marcelagus (TCE)

No problem. Isn't that image of Peach from a different game too though? I thought her hair has a different color back in the original game. The Gravitator 13:33, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

She always had gold hair out of game. Much like the Brown/Orange Yoshi thing - color limitations caused in-game sprites to differ from out-game artwork. Stumpers! 20:14, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

Beta Mushroom Music

This guy corrupted Super Mario Bros. and I noticed whenever he gets a mushroom or fire flower, it makes a different tune that's not glitched up. Here is the link --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuL0Ij0RU10&feature=related --Onestop 16:46, 13 October 2008 (EDT)

He used a Game Genie code. Therefore, obviously it shouldn't be included in the article. Stuff without Game Genie, such as the infamous World-1 glitch or stuff, should be added. Also, if the guy corrupted it, it makes it his own video, which is not nnintendo related. Other comments? Super-YoshiMust...eat...sig...Talk? C???

North American release date change

I have changed the North American release date (formerly listed in the infobox as 18/10/1985) to "1985/1986". (In fact, it should probably be changed to just 1986.) It was impossible to release the game in Japan on 13/9 and then turn around and release it in the USA one month later. A discussion is currently taking place at Wikipedia (wikipedia:Talk:Super Mario Bros.#North American Release Date) and here's what I can gather from reading it:

  • SMB was released in Japan on 13/9/85, as we know.
  • Nintendo approached New York retailers around the same time in order to get their products in store for Christmas. It is thought 18/10 is the day they started this. SMB was not even a pack-in in Japan yet. The Christmas shopping season started on 29/11 that year.
  • During the same three months, sales of SMB boomed in Japan. Then-Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi decided to pack-in SMB with the Famicom in late November or early December. Then, he decided to bring it to the US. Which means US game development commenced in December 1985, pretty much ruling out a 1985 release date.
  • The NES was test-marketed that Christmas in NY. Only 50K of 100K units sold, so they went to LA the next February. It's pretty certain that SMB was not available in NY, but it possibly could have been available in LA. Supporting this is an ad from the LA Times in 13/3/86 that supposedly mentions SMB. (It's pay-to-view, so no one knows for sure - all we know comes from the descriptive text that comes with the Google result.)
  • So it is reasonable to conclude that SMB was released to the entire country sometime after that LA Times ad. Similar ads and full-blown news stories start to widely appear in August. The first mention in any English-language media is a 19/8/86 Reuters story in the Philadelphia Inquirer and several other newspapers.

Conclusion: Now, Mario games can be released almost simultaneously in all regions, and Nintendo knows they will sell well. But it was different in 1985. Nintendo had no idea how SMB would sell in Japan, and it would have been silly to throw money at a US version without ensuring it had strong Japanese sales first. SMB did sell well in Japan, and (to quote one of the participants in the linked discussion) "sales take time, they don't happen immediately." By the time Nintendo realised it would be a good idea to come to the US, it was already 1986. The 18/10/85 date is pure hokey. Nintendo doesn't even know where they got it from. So there's my case. Toadfan 22:07, 27 August 2009 (EDT)

Apparently some New York Times article said something about it, but until someone shows us the article, I am taking down that release date. A Link to the Present 19:18, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Okay... Let's stop reverting and rereverting this on the article and talk about it. Please don't get mad but I see no proof in the article that is used as a source of information. A Link to the Present 10:54, 3 January 2011 (EST)

Mushroom Retainers

Several users have changed the Mushroom Retainers in the Non-playable section to Toad the character now, and it still continues to happen. Once and for all: There are six Mushroom Retainers in that game! It is absolutely impossible that all these retainers are in fact Toad. Toad can not split up to six different characters that are trapped in six different fortresses. It is impossible!

The next one who switches the Mushroom Retainers with Toad without giving a strong and valid reason will immediately receive a warning. This edit had been undone too many times now! - Gabumon from the Digimon franchise Gabumon(talk) 16:43, 3 October 2009 (EDT)

Bowser Artwork

Artwork used for the Japanese and sometimes the European box art. Drawn by Shigeru Miyamoto, as referenced here, Part 4.
The original SMB character artwork.
A poster of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
The flyer with the more recent artwork.

The user Byllant removed the Bowser artwork from this article because it is seen on the Japanese flyer for Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, aka Super Mario Bros. 2. But this is not the only artwork found in this article's gallery that is printed on the flyer. If you have read the "Iwata Asks" interviews for Flipnote Studio, you might know that there was just the character art on the Japanese SMB package drawn by Shigeru Miyamoto and the artwork in the manual when SMB was originally released. Then the animation artist Yoichi Kotabe came to Nintendo and drew new character art, as seen on the flyer. But if this artwork was already used before the release of The Lost Levels or not, I don't know. So either all the more recent artwork should be removed from the article and moved to The Lost Levels, or a note should be added that it is unclear for which game the artwork was first used. --Grandy02 07:40, 15 May 2010 (EDT)

Platitudinous (talk) You sure do know your facts. Put them both on there.
You mean adding the images to both galleries (and categories)? Actually, that's what I wouldn't like that much, as a lot of artwork has been reused various times in the franchise's history. I've seen that galleries usually ignore reused artwork. Therefore, I'd prefer to only use artwork for the earliest game it was used for sure. The only thing known for sure is that the artwork seen on the flyer didn't exist when Super Mario Bros. was originally released. As it isn't exactly known when the artwork first appeared, I'd rather add them to the Lost Levels gallery. Anyway, there needs to be consistency with the Bowser artwork. --Grandy02 17:33, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

I just have an idea. I think it would be a good idea to include a quote from Miyamoto, Kondo, or Tezuka from the Super Mario All Stars: Limited Edition booklet. And if the right thing to do is make a proposal to do this, someone please tell me, because I would be happy to do it and it would be my first proposal.

Starting from the last world the player gets Game Over

With both NES Classics: Super Mario Bros. and Famicom Mini: Super Mario Bros. 2 (a.k.a. Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels), would it be worth mentioning in the Trivia section that if you press "A" and then "START" at the same time on the GBA Versions of the games, the player will start from the World they got Game Over on. What do you think?
— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kangaflora (talk).

Well, unsigned comment, I'm not sure. You can add it if you wish as long as you have a source or at least have it and do it yourself. But this is an article about the original Super Mario Bros., and there is no need to get The Lost Levels involved in this. A Link to the Present 11:41, 16 January 2011 (EST)

Is this really noteworthy? The current source has only one mention as a header called 『スーパーマリオブラザーズ1・2』のヒント (Super Mario Bros. 1&2 Hints). This seems like a shorthand way of fitting "Super Mario Bros. + Super Mario Bros. 2" within the same space, making it informal, not the official title mentioned elsewhere in the source. It's a casual reference like Super Mario or, with some Japanese fans, 「スーマリ」 (SuMari), that is meant to pair with the sequel and would probably work better as just a redirect. Jeff Rovin's How to Win at Super Mario Bros. Games

Important note: I recommend someone who owns a copy of this book makes a response.

The book How to Win at Super Mario Bros. Games by Jeff Rovin features walkthroughs for this game and SMB3. I think it would be nice if somewhere online there were a web site talking about errors in this book's SMB walkthrough. There are in fact a few errors I have in my memory:

  • Book says: the fifth Fire Bar in 1-4 moves clockwise.
  • Truth: the fifth Fire Bar in 1-4 moves counterclockwise.
  • Book says: the invisible 1-Up mushroom in 3-1 will be collectible if you're Super Mario and may or may not if you're small Mario.
  • Truth: whether the invisible 1-Up mushroom in 3-1 is collectible depends on whether you didn't dodge any coins in 2-3.
  • Book says: the underwater section of 8-4 is optional.
  • Truth: the underwater section of 8-4 is compulsory.

It would also be nice if MarioWiki had an article on this book; then I could include these errors in the book's walkthrough in the article myself. 99.101.66.106 13:29, August 11, 2021 (EDT)

The infobox states that the game is available in Japanese. Which version is in Japanese? --Dine2017 (talk) 22:36, October 17, 2022 (EDT)

None. It's lazy copy and pasting that a lot of infoboxes have.--Platform (talk) 05:49, October 31, 2022 (EDT)

Split References in other media section

Remember how, a while back, I proposed that the References to other media section of The Super Mario Bros. Movie should be moved to its own list article? That was because of how long it was and how much space it took up. The References in other media section looks to be of equal length, and should preferably be split into its own list article of the same format.

Just to be clear, I'm not referring to the References to other media section; it's far too short. It's the References in other media section I'm referring to. I'll make a draft in my sandbox later on (currently busy irl) to demonstrate what it would look like. Yours truly, RetroNintendo2008. My talk pageMy contributions 08:52, September 28, 2024 (EDT)

Split

  1. RetroNintendo2008 (talk) Per proposal.
  2. ThePowerPlayer (talk) Given that Super Mario Bros. is likely the most iconic game in the entire franchise, this is a good opportunity to trim the references section in the main article, since I foresee this list only growing in the future. Also, once split to its own article, images could be added to make the references more immediately clear.
  3. Pizza Master (talk) Per all.
  4. Killer Moth (talk) Per all.
  5. EvieMaybe (talk) i wonder what'll be the next game to require this
  6. Power Flotzo (talk) Per all.
  7. The Eggo55 (talk) Per all.
