List of references in video games

This article is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it is being worked on. We hope to have it completed ASAP.

Mario characters have appeared as cameos in other Nintendo games over the course of Mario's long history. Below is a list of some of these appearances.

1080° Avalanche	NGC	On the bottom of Ricky Winterborn's "8-Bit Soul" snowboard, an All-Stars sprite of Mario can be seen (or Luigi on the alternate color of that board). In his biography, it is mentioned that he likes to play Nintendo games such as Super Mario Bros. and the Legend of Zelda. An NES controller board makes Mario's SMB jump noise when the jump button is pressed, or the Bullet Bill sound when landing. A giant ice sculpture of Mario is at the end of one stage. Alleyway	GB	When the player starts the game, the player will see Mario walking by and getting in the paddle, thus controlling it. There is also a Mario head that is next to the lives count. There is a Mario sprite that appeared in one of the bonus levels in the game. Also, artwork of the game shows that Mario is the one controlling the paddle. Animal Crossing	GCN	There are numerous Mario referrences found in Animal Crossing. There are many rare NES that the player can find and play once they are in their house. Among them are several Mario games, including Donkey Kong and Wario's Woods. Super Mario Bros. can be found in the game's coding, though there is no known way to get it legitimately. Two items in the game are the rare Mario and Luigi statues. While rowing to Animal Island, Kapp'n sings one of a few random songs, and a line to one of them is that he sings better than Mario. After rescuing Gulliver, the player might be told of how he left his pet goldfish in Hyrule and Toad Town. There is also a series of Mario-themed furniture that could be unlocked with special cheat codes from Nintendo Power if the player told them to Tom Nook. They include: Warp Pipe, Starman, Fire Flower, Mushroom, Flagpole, Koopa Shell, Cannon (or rather a Bullet Bill Blaster), ? Block, Brick Block, and a Coin; also, there was a wallpaper called "Mushroom Mural" which was an exact replica of the backdrop of the first level in Super Mario Bros., and a carpet called "Block Flooring" which was identical to the brown brick ground Mario walked on. There are four Mario-related shirts: the big bro's shirt, a red shirt with Mario's trademark 'M', the lil' bro's shirt, a green shirt with Luigi's 'L', the turnip shirt, on which a pattern resembling vegetables appears, and the toad shirt, which is a red shirt with Toad spots; for some reason, the name in-game incorrectly spells "Toad" with a lowercase t. There is a crocodile named Alfonso, who sports the red M shirt, and whose initial catchphrase is "It's-a me". One of the gorillas, Louie, greatly resembles Donkey Kong (who, ironically, wears the lil' bro's shirt). Lastly, if the player sends Bob the code on his E-card, he will write back in a letter claiming he had a dream of the player running around an island with a water pump on their back; this is a reference to Super Mario Sunshine. Animal Crossing: Wild World	NDS	The furniture pieces from the original Animal Crossing are available once more, with some new ones added in. However, this time they must be received from Nintendo by Wi-Fi letters. Also, occasionally when players open up villagers' bureaus, dressers, etc., the message that pops up reads "What are Luigi's clothes doing in here?!" Their hats and mustaches are also in the game. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts	Xbox 360	To show the power of the vehicle editor in the game, a Mario on wheels is shown in the trailer in Nutty Acres. It then gets destroyed by Banjo and Kazooie, possibly a reference regarding the departure from Nintendo. The trailer was later edited to remove the portion when the 8-bit Mario is destroyed. However, the shot of it prior to the destroying remains. [1]
Kirby Super Star	SNES	Mario, Toad, Luigi and Birdo are also in the audience of the Megaton Punch Contest along with several 1-up mushrooms, also a picture of Mario appears at the end of Milky Way Wishes. Several of the items in the The Great Cave Offensive, such as the "Turtle Shell" and "Bucket" are from Mario games. Also when Kirby activates his Stone ability he will (very rarely) turn into a gold statue of Mario. In Kirby's battle against King Dedede in Spring Breeze Mario and Peach are in the audience. Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Birdo can be seen in the "Megaton Punch" mini-game's audience.	File:Stat.gif
The Legend of Stafy 3	GBA	Wario appears many times to help out Stafy and, additionaly, get his mitts on some treasure. Stafy controls many versions of Wario, including Fiery Wario and Puffy Wario. Wario gives him various treasures of his, such as his own game.	File:Stafi-Wario.jpg
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past	SNES	Some of the houses in the light world village has a painting of Mario in it. If Link pulls on it, rupees will come out. Chain Chomps are also enemies.	File:Ss lozalttf.gif
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening	GB	A Yoshi Doll is found at the Trendy Game shop in Mabe Village. Link can win the Yoshi Doll by controlling the crane and hovering over it. When you receive the doll, the text box will state that it has appeared in many games recently, another reference to the Mario games. Link can recieve a small Chain Chomp, and several Mario enemies are in the game. Wart is an NPC. Also, when Mr. Write shows you the picture sent to him by the goat in Animal Village. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time	N64	The Lon Lon Ranch owners, Ingo and Talon, both look like the Mario Bros. Ingo, Talon, and Malon all wear necklaces with Bowser's head on it. In the area where Zelda usually stands in the Hyrule Castle courtyard there is a window on the right. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap	GBA	Lakitus appear as enemies who throw lightning bolts at Link, then disappears back into their clouds. Bob-omb is also found in this game, and if struck with the player's sword, will scurry around then then explode. A second hit will cause it to stop and then explode.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes	NGC	Mario and Yoshi dolls can be found in Otacon's Lab. Additionally, there is also a Nintendo GameCube that can be found in the same place. Several Nintendo games may be mentioned when fighting Psycho Mantis.|

Pinball	NES	During gameplay, when the player enters the bonus stage; the player will see Mario and Pauline in that stage. Mario has holding some kind of grid bridge, as the player can control him with that item.
PilotWings 64	Nintendo 64	In one of the games levels Mount Rushmore can be seen and it has Mario's face on it. If the player shoots Mario's face, it changes into Wario's.	File:Pilot2.JPG
Punch-Out!!	Game & Watch	Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. sometimes appear in the audience.	Reqired Image(s).
Rayman Raving Rabbids 2	Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS	In one Nintendo Power of the Wii version, a rabbid was in Mario clothes and crossed out the Power to Nintendo Plunger. In the DS version, in one minigame called Lunch Time, one of the things the player has to dodge is a Warp Pipe.	Required Image(s).
Sim City	SNES	If the player's city has a population of 500,000 residents, the player will earn a Mario statue. The bonus scenario Freeland has it's trees shaped like Mario's head. Bowser can appear and destroy the player's city by selecting him on the disasters menu. The Tokyo scenario has Bowser walking through the city, like Godzilla. The Simpsons Game	Wii/ DS	Mario can be seen working in the video game factory (although, with a few changes to avoid copyrights), the Simpson family can use Warp Pipes to travel around, an ape uses barrels to attack, like Donkey Kong, and a cut-scene shows Proffesor Frink marrying a female Koopa. SSX on Tour	GCN	Mario, Luigi and Peach are playable. Also, one of the courses, Nintendo Village, is completely Mario themed.

Tetris	NES	Mario and Luigi are seen dancing when the player completes Stage 9 Level 5 in Type B mode. Samus Aran, Pit, Donkey Kong and Link can also be seen dancing after the rocket ship takes off.	File:Ss tetris-nes.gif
NBA Street V3	GameCube	Mario, Luigi, and Peach are playable characters in the game, along with their Nintendo-themed home court (they guest star along with New Yorker hip-hop trio Beastie Boys, who appear in the other versions of the game, obviously unlike the Mario team).	File:Nba.jpg
Nintendogs	DS	In Nintendogs, there are a Mario hat and a Luigi hat that can be worn by the player's dog.Also, the player can find a Mario Kart Toy, a Peach Kart Toy, a Bowser Kart Toy, a ? Block and a classic Mario mushroom.	Center

Mention Sightings

• The Adventures of Willy Beamish – The "Nintari" game that Willy plays, entitled Monster Squad, appears to be a spoof of Super Mario Bros..
• Alex Kidd in Shinobi World – During its development, the fist boss of this game was "Mari-Oh", who bore a striking resemblance to Mario. (This was likely a way to mock Nintendo, as the Alex Kidd games were all made by Sega, Nintendo's brutal business rival.) By the final game, however, Mari-Oh was replaced with the unrelated "Kabuto" boss.
• Asterix & Obelix XXL 2: Mission Las Vegum – A certain Roman looks like Mario, only much more skinny. He also come with his own version of FLUDD. When attacking, he will very faintly shout "Yahoo!" in a Mario-esque voice. Upon beating him, he will shout "Mama mia!" The Roman also moves in a similar way to the way Mario moves in Super Mario Sunshine. In later stages, the Roman will even resort to trying to jump up high and stomping the character.
• Banjo-Tooie – A toilet in Grunty Industries, Inc. needs a plumber, Kazooie suggests Mario because he's a plumber. The toilet says he thinks Mario doesn't do that job anymore. Also, Goggles plays with a Donkey Kong doll.
• Big Brain Academy – One of the Syllable Count sentences is the famous Toad quote "Thank you, Mario, but our princess is in another castle" and in The Missing Link, sometimes a sketch of Mario's Hat will appear.
• Chibi-Robo – A character named Kid Eggplant looks just like the Eggplant Man enemy from Wrecking Crew.
• Crash of the Titans – The Ratnicians (A minor enemy in the game) can be heard sometimes saying "You thought he was an Italian plumber or something?" when they notice Crash.
• Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest – At the end of the game, Mario is awarded second or first place for collecting the most DK Coins, while Yoshi is awarded either second or third. Mario and Yoshi's ranks depend on how many DK Coins the player has collected.
• Earthbound/Mother 2 – In the Onett arcade there are several Donkey Kong arcade machines. In the Japanese version of Earthbound (known as Mother 2) Mario, Peach, Luigi and Toad are a few of the default names of the games characters. Also the default name for the dog is Yoshi and Ness's favorite meal is "Mushroom Meal" and the favorite thing is "goal".
• Earthworm Jim – The Sega CD version of this game includes several secret masks for the character, including one of Donkey Kong with an arrow through his head. This is supposedly to spite Nintendo as the release of Donkey Kong Country around the same time prevented Earthworm Jim from making more of an impact.
• F-1 Race – Mario waves the checkered flag when the player wins a race.
• F-Zero X and F-Zero GX - A playable racer named Mr. EAD bears an uncannily similar physical appearance to Mario. In F-Zero X, a race course named Rainbow Road appears, with a striking resemblance to the Rainbow Road course from Mario Kart 64.
• Goldeneye 007 – A cheat mode in this game is "DK mode" this is named after Donkey Kong. In this mode players have big heads and small bodies.
• The Great Giana Sisters – This entire game was an unauthorized rip-off of Super Mario Bros., with similar-looking graphics and gameplay. It was released for computers in 1987, and was pulled from shelves very quickly due to legal pressure from Nintendo. The tagline for this game was "The brothers are history.". It appeared in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2008 for the shortest video game release (1 week).
• Hoyle Puzzle and Board Games 2008 – In one of the bonus games, Even More Contraptions, there is a contraption called Super Mel Brothers, involving Mel Schlemming and his brother Angus having to get home, avoiding alligators.
• Jill of the Jungle – A "News Bulletin" announces Mario, at age 72, is giving up superhero status because of Jill's "incredible" popularity. "We are not cool enough. We just did not stand a chance." states the newsflash. It also says that he will return to his old job, cleaning gorilla cages at the local zoo. (Unfortunately for Jill, because of her incredible unpopularity she was retired after only three games.)
• Justice League Heroes – The villain Gorilla Grodd (notably, one of The Flash's rogues) attacks the player's characters by materializing large barrels and hurling them.
• Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night in the mountain fortress in one area a ape soldier will toss barrels at Spyro a reference to Donkey Kong.
• The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening – Li'l Bow-Wow, known in the Mario series as a Chain Chomp is featured in the game and 'befriends' Link as actually helps him access one of the dungeons. Other Mario series monsters like Bob-ombs and Goombas also appear in the game. The character Mamu also looks just like Wart.
• Maniac Mansion – When the player turns on a "video game," some music is played, and the player hears the first five notes of the famous Super Mario Bros. theme.
• Megaman Battle Network 3 – Mario's clothes appear in Mayl's room.
• Megaman ZX – There are two brothers who resemble Mario and Luigi.
• Mother 1 & 2 – Same as Earthbound
• Nintendogs – Mario and Luigi's hats appear as wearables for the dogs, as well as RC Mario, Peach, and Bowser Kart toys.
• Pikmin 2 – A picture of Bowser is on a box of matches. The game's protagonists, Captain Olimar and Louie, resemble Mario and Luigi respectively. Their original Japanese names are also anagrams or shortening of Mario and Luigi's names. (Orima = Mario, Rui/Lui = Luigi)
• Pokémon Yellow – On the TV in the copycat's room the player can see Mario with a bucket on his head. This is a reference to the game Mario & Wario, where Mario gets a bucket dropped on his head by Wario.
• Pokémon Stadium 2 – A few of the accessories that can be received from the Mystery Gift feature in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal versions include an NES, SNES, Virtual Boy and Nintendo 64. When using the Transfer Pak to see them in Pokémon Stadium 2, a limited number of video games appear randomly on the screen depending on which console is set up. These games includes Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. for the NES, Super Mario World for the SNES and Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64.
• Qix – Mario appears, dressed from certain cultures from around the world.
• The Simpsons Road Rage – Some houses have the switch from the switch places in the garden.
• The Simpsons Game – On a certain level where warp pipes are being used by characters and on the same level, Mario is seen walking a treadmill.
• Spyro: A Hero´s Tail - there is an enemy that looks like a Piranha Plant and the Professor mentions Power Stars and Red Coins.
• Stunt Race FX – Mario and Luigi appear on billboards.
• Super Play Action Football – On the coin that is tossed before the game, Mario's head is the Head side and Raccoon Mario's tail is the Tail side.
• Super Punch Out – Mario, DK, and DK Jr. (all in their original forms) appear in crowd.
• Super Scope 6 – Mario flies one of the planes once a certain amount of progress is made.
• Taiko no Tatsujin 8 – The Super Mario Bros. theme is one of the playable songs.
• Uniracers – The Hopper track Wario Paint is a spin off of the game Mario Paint.
• Viewtiful Joe – Joe whistles the main theme to Super Mario Bros..
• Sim City DS – Bowser's Castle makes a cameo as a unlockable landmark for the player's city.
