Jigglypuff in Melee

Jigglypuff is first seen in the original Super Smash Bros. Jigglypuff was the first of the four unlockables, unlocked by beating 1-P Mode once, and then beating her (however, if specific conditions to unlock Captain Falcon and Ness are met beforehand, they will be battled first). Although It does not have many powerful attacks, her ability to float (technically, a five-fold jump), is one of her best abilities in the game, like Kirby's own ability. She needs this ability, being a very light character. Jigglypuff has one very powerful, very risky attack called Rest, which will almost always KO anyone, if close enough, and cause Jigglypuff to fall asleep. But, if not done correctly, she may just fall asleep.

Jigglypuff returned in Super Smash Bros. Melee, retaining the same position she had in the previous game. she was still unlockable, and was unlocked the exact same way. Like other re-introduced characters, Jigglypuff's normal B move, Pound, was moved to Side B, and Rollout took it's place. Once used, the player could charge up the attack and, once charged up enough, will send Jigglypuff rolling across the ground at top speed, devastating anyone who is unlucky enough to be in the way.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Jigglypuff returns as an unlockable character once again. This information was accidentally leaked in an interview with Solid Snake's voice actor David Hayter (when asked what Brawl character he would like to beat up, he replied "Jigglypuff".) In her Final Smash, Puff Up, she increases in size dramatically, bouncing players off of her at great speed.

Solid Snake Codec Conversation

  • Snake: Aw, there's a big eyeball walking around here...
  • Colonel: That's just Jigglypuff.
  • Snake: Jigglypuff? Is that some kind of marshmallow?
  • Colonel: Jigglypuff is a balloon-shaped Pokémon. It may be light and puffy and full of air, but its Sleep ability is devastating.
  • Snake: Sleep...? What's so devastating about it going to sleep?
  • Colonel: The instant it falls asleep, there's a huge buildup of energy in its center of gravity. If it hits you, it's lights out for sure.
  • Snake: So it puts a lot of energy into sleeping? Sounds pretty irresponsible if you ask me.
  • Colonel: Takes all kinds, Snake. Especially here in Brawl.

Role in the Subspace Emissary

Like Toon Link and Wolf O'Donnell, she makes a rather minor Subspace Emissary appearance. After finding a red door in a Donkey Kong Island stage, the player will be taken to Pokémon Stadium where Jigglypuff is singing. When she sees the arrival of the player, she thinks they are opponents and fights them. Once defeated, she'll join the player's party.

Other Information

The Super Smash Bros. series dawned a new popularity for Jigglypuff, and she has become one of the most popular Pokémon. In the first two games, Jigglypuff was voiced by Rachael Lillis in the English Dub, and Mika Kanai in the original Japanese. This marks her as one of the only five characters who have an English voice actor, the others being Mario, Dr. Mario, Luigi and Peach. Additionally, if Kirby uses Rollout, he will always say "Purin", which is Jigglypuff's Japanese name. Jigglypuff's name and voice have been localized throughout Europe as well, in French as Rondoudou, and in German as Pummeluff.

Profile Information from Super Smash Bros.

The Balloon PKMN with the big, round eyes. It sings a smoothing melody, sending those that hear it to sleep. When mad, it puffs itself up. As a Balloon PKMN, its body is light, weak, and easy to knock away.

(Classic)
Pokémon Red & Blue

This balloon Pokémon invites its opponents in close with its big, round eyes and then puts them to sleep with a soothing lullaby. It puffs itself up when angry, and while it may look adorable, it's not to be trifled with; it knows several powerful techniques. Jigglypuff evolves into Wigglytuff after exposure to a Moon Stone.

(Adventure)
B: Rollout
Smash B: Pound
Jigglypuff's normal attacks are weak, and because of its light weight it's easily sent flying. However, with its incredible midair agility, it seems to dance when airborne. Rollout is a powerful speed attack, but be careful not to fly off the edge. Pound does serious damage, and it can also help as a recovery move.
51 Jigglypuff [Smash]
(All-Star)
Up & B: Sing
Down & B: Rest
Jigglypuff can put its enemies to sleep if they are in range of its Sing attack, although the attack does not work on airborne foes. Rest puts Jigglypuff into a deep sleep, but at the instant it drops off, an intense energy force radiates out of the exact center of its body. If this force comes in contact with an enemy, look out! Rest is Jigglypuff's wild card.

49 Jigglypuff Pokémon Red and Blue
1998
A Balloon Pokémon. It invites opponents in close with its big, round eyes, then puts them to sleep with a calming song. The secret to the song's unfailing efficacy is Jigglypuff's ability to sing on the wavelength that will make its opponent the sleepiest. It also uses Attract to infatuate opponents who touch it. It uses a Moon Stone to evolve into Wigglytuff.
72 Puff Up Jigglypuff's Final Smash. It wills its body to get bigger and bigger and bigger. It can't move, and it can't attack--all it can do is get bigger while everyone else looks on. However, it's invulnerable, and it overpowers all attacks to gradually push its opponents off the screen. It's a very simple technique, but how it's used determines its effectiveness.
