Another month of summer is here. The weather is good, the holiday is upon us, and the facts just keep on rolling in. So many facts in this page. Speaking of factual information, you should know that you can sign up to create a presentation for this year's Mario Awards! There's more information in the sign-up page and in Critic Corner, but it's a fun way to get creative and make something enjoyable while celebrating another year of history.

I'm all kinds of busy at the moment, so all that's left to say is please enjoy reading this issue's Pipe Plaza. See you next month with a special announcement!

Monthly Report

Written by: LudwigVon (talk)

One year!

Yes, 'Shroom readers! It's been one year already that I started writing this section, and it is in these moments that one realizes how much the time goes fast. Well, let's stop being nostalgic, since it's not really the right moment for that, and let's have a look at Super Mario Wiki's statistics for the month of July. Oh, and to celebrate my one year anniversary at writing this section, I take the opportunity to add a year-on-year basis to see how the site evolves during the current year.

So, without further ado (as if I really had something else to say), let's take a look at this Monthly Report.

Conclusion:
Compared with the previous month, the number of active users increased with more than 38 users. In regards to the wiki administrators, there is one less now, and that's because of the resignation of Henry Tucayo Clay (talk). In addition, two new users now have the 'Shroom writer rights, and these are Smasher (talk), our new Sub-Director, and Hooded Pitohui (talk) who isn't actually new to the 'Shroom, so don't ask me why he didn't have the rights well before.

Now, looking on a year-on-year basis, it is interesting to note that there's less administrators now on the wiki compared to last year, but at the same time there's one more patroller right now. Basically, it's interesting that the wiki's activity is quite steady, and let's keep it going that way!

And here's the end of another Monthly Report. Thank you for your reading, and pass again next month. Meanwhile, enjoy your summer!

Committee Interviews

Welcome to Committee Interviews! In this part of Anniversary Announcements, I will do short interviews with the members of the Awards Committee, so you can get to know them a bit better!
This month, two of our newest members: Hooded Pitohui (talk) and BBQ Turtle (talk)!

Hooded Pitohui

Lakituthequick 2019 is your first year in the Awards Committee, what was your inspiration to join?
Hooded Pitohui Well, honestly, I've been wanting to join for some time. I've spent years, even back when I was lurking, reading through every old meeting log - sometimes having thoughts but never brave enough to actually create an account or hop into a meeting to share them. So, once I started becoming active in the community and started taking on more roles, the Awards Committee was something I knew I wanted to join. I would've joined it in 2018, but I wasn't certain I could commit the time to it then. This year, however, I felt more certain I could be an active contributor to it.
Lakituthequick What made you interested in the AC to begin with?
Hooded Pitohui Hmm... you know, that's a fair question.
Hooded Pitohui I suppose in part it was the process behind it, if that makes sense at all. I enjoyed the thought of these people coming together voluntarily to give their time and energy towards making those Awards polls and Awards ceremonies I'd been watching for such a long time come together, as well as organizing and coordinating the Awards events. I think there's a bit of sentimentality and romanticism to it. I mean, it's a wonderful thing, in my opinion, that there are people who care so much about this community to want to devote themselves to making its largest celebration - which is a spectacle in itself, and a testament to what this community offers - happen year after year.
Hooded Pitohui Plus, I'd be lying if I said I didn't like bureaucracy and parliamentary procedure. I like the formality of the Awards Committee behind the scenes. I've always been fond of peering into internal processes.
Lakituthequick I completely agree with that sentiment, such efforts being given, all voluntarily.
Lakituthequick How does it make you experience it all, being new in the AC?
Hooded Pitohui Well, you know, it's a new experience, so there's always some things that come with that. A few people here know very well that I am an overly-cautious and nervous person, always fearful of messing things up when I start something new. So, of course, I feel like it took me a little time to get into gear and begin offering more substantial contributions in the meetings. But, soon enough, I had added some of my input and felt more than comfortable working with the other members.
Hooded Pitohui But the whole experience was welcoming and comfortable. Anton and Turboo, as well as other experienced members, do make it very easy to adjust to being a new member. They lay out everything clearly in both meetings and the Staff Board, and they're always willing to answer questions that come up. It all made it easy and rather enjoyable, even, to join this year.
Lakituthequick I'm glad to hear that! Did your experience with running Strategy Wing in The 'Shroom have influence on your choice, or did it otherwise help your role?
Hooded Pitohui Oh, I would absolutely say yes, to both questions. I think that having been given the opportunity to work as a member of The 'Shroom Core Staff went a long ways in making me confident in joining the AC, and I know that the experiences I've had in that position - working with a small group of users focused on a particular project - made transitioning into the AC easier. As much as I could speak about being nervous - which is more a result of my personality than anything with the AC - having that Staff experience made it feel like something I was already somewhat used to.
Hooded Pitohui And, ah, I don't know if being Strategy Wing Director in particular helped at all, but a running joke with a few folks now is that the position is well-suited to me, as often as I overanalyze things. Perhaps that's where some of my focus on the minor details comes in, like it did when we had to name Favorite Lyrical Song this year.
Lakituthequick Joke material or not, the minor details can be very important, the Lyrical adjective being one of those.
Lakituthequick I think you already partly answered this question earlier, but just in case, what is in your opinion the most fun part of being in the Committee, or the awards in general?
Hooded Pitohui Ah, my favorite part about Awards, honestly? I think it's just so many people coming together to have a good time, to work as a community to really make everything about the Awards season stand out. Sure, everyone ends up in their own little circles and working on their own little projects. I mean, you have the Awards Committee hum along in one area, tournament hosts make their plans, KG hosts and players prepare for weeks of some highly fun self-inflicted suffering, and some just want to play against others or work on a presentation. It's just seeing everyone coming together - working on projects, casually chatting, whatever. It's one of the best opportunities for people who otherwise don't speak to each other or have an opportunity to get to know each other to meet and begin conversations that may last well beyond the season.
Hooded Pitohui I know it’s perhaps a broad answer, but I think that's the most fun part of Awards for me - seeing that happen year after year. My only regret this year is that KG has stretched me so thin, keeping me from being in other Tournaments, the Art Contest, and making all the presentations I hoped to. Unfortunately, I have to prioritize somewhere, and 'Shroom and KG come first.
Lakituthequick I agree, it's all very nice to see happening together and separate, yet in harmony.
Lakituthequick Did you have or do you have any goals that go with your awards experience?
Hooded Pitohui You know, I have to be honest. The answer is: not really. I just hoped to be a help. I wanted to give back, and if I've shouldered some work that would otherwise fall on folks who don't want it or folks who've put their efforts into other areas, if I've been able to make some positive contributions to anyone's Awards experiences, then I'm happy.
Lakituthequick I'm glad. For something different I also gotta ask, why the hooded pitohui as opposed to any other species of bird, or animal in general?
Hooded Pitohui Well, you know, when I signed up for an account with the Boards, I decided that I needed something that would be unique and memorable. After all, this was the first online community I was joining - it was a moment to cement my online handle from there on it. The day I finally took the plunge to sign up, I knew I wanted a strange but interesting animal. And thanks to Clauncher, I almost signed up as "Pistol Shrimp." Thankfully, I failed the CAPTCHA at that point, so I went to try again later. At that point, it was a little less of an impulse decision, so I had thought it over some more.
Hooded Pitohui And, so, I decided that - always having been fascinated with poisonous and venomous animals, and knowing no better exemplar of a fascinating animal, I ought to go with the Hooded Pitohui, the world's most prominent toxic bird. I thought it through well. First, I hoped it might encourage questions which could become good fun fact ice breakers. Second, it was certainly memorable, and seemed so unlikely to be taken at most places. And, if it did happen to be taken, why it was a simple as swapping it out for one of the relatives - Crested Pitohui, Variable Pitohui, so on. That was, I could have variations where Hooded Pitohui was taken, but I'd always be instantly recognizable as the fellow with Pitohui in his handle.
Lakituthequick I can't imagine a world where you'd be called "Pistol Shrimp" honestly.
Lakituthequick That bring us to the end of my pre-written questions! Do you have anything you yourself would like to add?
Hooded Pitohui Ah, I don't think I have too much I can add that would be of interest to you for this section - we'll have to wait for Perch, for that.
Hooded Pitohui But, if I can add just a few short plugs of my own - well, speaking of Perch, I do have to thank him for being quite the source of encouragement to join the AC this year.
Hooded Pitohui And I would certainly like to thank you for your time here today, LTQ, not to mention the impressive work you do as Awards Records Keeper and Anniversary Announcements. This section has consistently been such a gem with you at the helm. It never fails to impress me, and I look forward to its return every year. So thank you, for all the work you do.
Hooded Pitohui And, ah, if I may, it's too late this year, but please, if I can call upon our readers, be sure to help me next year to push Toadies to the top of Favorite Species in next year's Awards with your write-ins. Think what an accomplishment it would be, finally getting those hard-working Magikoopa apprentices their deserved recognition.
Hooded Pitohui But, on a more serious note, please enjoy the rest of the Awards season, everyone! Sign up for a presentation, if you're able.
Lakituthequick Thank you! I'd also like to thank you so much for this insightful interview and your time, and have fun with the rest of the season!

BBQ Turtle

Lakituthequick This year is your first year in the Awards Committee! What inspired you to join?
BBQ Turtle Well, I've seen two awards cycles now, and was interested in joining the Awards Committee to help out and see what goes on behind the scenes, and I knew I'd definitely have time to do it this year.
Lakituthequick And how did you experience your first year in the AC?
BBQ Turtle Sorry, I don't quite understand what you're asking there, is there any chance you could rephrase it slightly?
Lakituthequick Ah yes, how did you think it all went, also being new in the committee.
BBQ Turtle I think it went quite well, it's definitely been fun, and I've enjoyed being able to work with the others, they made me feel welcome.
Lakituthequick Good to hear that! Did your position as Wiki Patroller influence your choice or activities?
BBQ Turtle I don't think it directly influenced it, but I think it did give me a bit more confidence to join in the first place.
Lakituthequick What did you find to be the most fun part of being in the committee, or the awards in general?
BBQ Turtle For the committee, I think the most fun part has been all of the little jokes people have made during the meetings, it made them more fun and lively, and for the awards in general, I'd have to say the presentations. They're always really fun to see and I love seeing how creative people have been with the results!
Lakituthequick Presentations are always a highlight indeed, which reminds me, your presentations, and your art in general, is always traditional pencil on paper art, as opposed to the 'fancy' digital drawings and 3D art some others come up with, which makes it unique and homemade in your own way. What pulls you towards this way of creating?
BBQ Turtle It's mainly because that's what I've always done, so I'm quite used to it by now... and my few attempts at digital art haven't exactly ended well, so if it's something important like an awards presentation, I prefer to stick to what I know.
Lakituthequick And it's effective, you ended up in the favourite presentation awards multiple times with it.
Lakituthequick Did or do you have any goals for yourself around the awards?
BBQ Turtle Mainly to do what I can when and where I can, whether that's voting, entering tournaments or making a presentation, though I've never really had a specific goal in mind.
Lakituthequick On a different note, you mentioned sometime that you are not necessarily a fan of barbecues, or turtles, so why the name? You do have an affiliation with Shy Guys.
BBQ Turtle It came from a running joke I had with my brother, there was this game I had on my tablet where there was a turtle which said "barbecue" in a really bad Australian accent, so we called it the BBQ Turtle and I started using that as a name for not-so-serious stuff and it's just stuck since. As for the Shy Guys, I just really like them, they're one of my joint favourite Mario characters. I've always found them cute and funny.
Lakituthequick Nice. Alright, that brings us nearly to the end! Do you have anything you'd like to add yourself?
BBQ Turtle I don't think so, apart from thank you for interviewing me!
Lakituthequick Thank you too for having this interview with me and for taking the time! Have fun with the rest of the season!

Both Hooded Pitohui and BBQ Turtle are new members of the AC, but that didn't stop them from having a good time. That way you can see the welcoming aspects of the community. It's also great to see how the entire system is volunteer-run, yet is solid.

Another month, another ending to Anniversary Announcements. I hope you enjoyed, and for next month, have fun at the ceremony! See ya next month, buh-bye!

Interview

Written by: Superchao (talk)

Hello, 'Shroom readers! You might be wondering "who the hell did Perch interview this month" if you're just looking at the labels. Well, I mention it in the interview, but it's none other than Chibiki Daisy, the labels changed to reflect a possible namechange coming soon. If I luck out and it actually happens then I'm all set already, and if it doesn't, then... oh well, I still got a good interview with Chibiki. Someone who's left and returned three times over tends to have a lot of interesting stuff to say, so let's get to it!

The Interview:
Superchao: Hello, 'Shroom readers! If you don't know this is the interview by now, I don't know what to tell you!
Superchao: For this month, I've reached out to another user who left for a while but returned - Chibiki Daisy!
Zange: Wooooo for returning users club!!
Superchao: Even I am in that club!
Superchao: But that is a story for another day...
Superchao: So, how did you find the wiki in the first place?
Zange: Honestly, I don't even remember.
Zange: I think my earliest memories of the wiki were just looking up the Mario Kart games just for the heck of it.
Superchao: How long ago are we talking, because until told otherwise I'm going to assume these are from when you were like 2 and thus are your earliest memories in general
Zange: I want to say when I was around ten or eleven, so maybe six years ago?
Zange: Anything before the last year is just a big blur to me.
Superchao: I keep forgetting how young people are on this wiki and it makes me feel old.
Superchao: Then I remember I'm not as old as Ghost Jam or 3K and I feel young!
Zange: Technically you'll always be young because there's always gonna be people older than you, no?
Superchao: i won't be ninety years old, i'll be ninety years young!!
Zange: That's the spirit!
Superchao: So, once you found the wiki, any particular reason you didn't just take your info and go?
Zange: I just kept coming back because I don't think I could get enough info!
Zange: I mean it's not like some other random website has the kind of information here to the extent that we have it.
Superchao: What about when I make MarioWiki 2!?
Zange: I don't think the internet could handle another MarioWiki like this, it's probably information overload at that point.
Superchao: That's true. It is an impressive resource. You ever thought about adding to it, or fine with just the community side of things?
Zange: I think I'm just fine with the community aspect.
Zange: Anything I could have added has most definitely been added by this point.
Superchao: What about... tennis
Zange: Please, do I look like a sports person? Ahaha...
Superchao: I mean, maybe? Perhaps you're just the type to hide it!!
Zange: Haha, you'd think. But thaaaaat's a secret~
Superchao: So! What made you notice "oh shit there's people here"? The most important step.
Zange: I'm pretty sure it was me stumbling my way into an issue of The Shroom after my mind sponged up as many Mario Kart tidbits as it could.
Superchao: I hope it was Issue 88, our mario kart 8 one. But probably not.
Superchao: That'd just be too fitting!
Zange: It really would!
Zange: But of course, 11-year old me just skimmed through everything instead of taking time to read it so who knows what issue it could have been?
Superchao: How dare. At the very least, do you read Mach Speed Mayhem yet?
Zange: I try to, anyways. I read through the last couple ones for sure.
Superchao: Excellent. Luckily, it'll keep going for a lot time so you'll have time to read it.
Superchao: What draws you to the 'Shroom, especially since you're appearing in it?
Zange: Honestly? I couldn't tell you.
Zange: I think just the idea of all those people getting together to do this big monthly thing just blew my mind at the time.
Zange: But regardless, I remember coming back month after month for new issues.
Superchao: It's kind of amazing that it's been going for twelve years, and the only times it ever missed issues were in the first two years.
Zange: The more I think about it now, the more mind blowing it is in a way. That's quite the feat.
Superchao: The wiki and community's general longevity is something I love talking about. Fourteen years is a goddamn eternity in internet time!
Zange: It really is! The wiki's a teenager now, aaa!!
Superchao: Oh god, you're right. Now I'm going to have to deal with the rebellious phase. God damn it.
Zange: You won't be the only one dealing with it, at least...
Superchao: Now, what got you involved in the community proper? Since you were definitely there for a couple years!
Zange: Well, throwback to the very last day of 2012 when I decided to register for the wiki.
Zange: And it wasn't even under the username we know today, it was as 'Daisyluva99'
Zange: 11 year old me should not have been allowed to pick names.
Superchao: but did you love daisy!?
Zange: I did, she was and still is my favorite, ahaha!
Zange: Anyways, most of my wiki edits were mainly just voting on Featured Articles. Not necessarily proud of it but I'm admitting it.
Zange: And then after a while, I kinda just... forgot about this place.
Superchao: I remember you came back to make a big "oh yeah I'm leaving forever bye" post
Zange: Yeah, but that was well down the timeline.
Zange: Anyways, fast forward to 2014.
Superchao: Oh! I forgot you had two leavings.
Zange: I check out the wiki again for old times sake and I notice that there's a forum link on the sidebar.
Zange: I decide to click, register, and lo and behold.
Zange: That was actually when the username of today was picked as well.
Zange: 12 year old me should have picked a better name tbh
Superchao: 13 year old me picked Superchao, 14 year old me picked TheGreatBlockyBoo, and I ultimately trusted my younger self's judgement more in the long run
Superchao: So you never know!
Zange: I mean I lowkey hate both names now but I feel like the second one is too cemented at this point for me to change so I guess I'm stuck with it in this community forever lmao
Superchao: What is the Chibiki part even about, anyway?
Zange: That was the name of the librarian from the anime Another sksks
Zange: I literally could not think of a name and I recently watched that show at the time so my brain was like 'hey let's go with this!'
Superchao: >a librarian
Superchao: >you hate the name
Superchao: Patchouli Daisy it is.
Zange: I'll take it, it has a nice ring to it hahaha
Superchao: I mean hey, if you want to change your name, doesn't matter how long you used the old one. Just look at Shokora!
Zange: Hmm, true...
Zange: I mean my name online elsewhere is already streamlined, might as well complete the streamlining!!
Superchao: To what?
Zange: Zange (aka my discord username if you're someone who talks to me a lot there - you know who you are)
Superchao: like me
Zange: Yeah, like you.
Superchao: Anyhow, sounds like a plan. Just try to make it official before Saturday (all you gotta do is PM Porplemontage) so I can label you Zange and not look like a crazy person
Zange: sksks, I can't promise anything but I can try(? maybe)
Superchao: I believe in yoooou
Zange: Well thank youuu
Superchao: SO. You came back. And you stuck around for a while!
Superchao: What was it like?
Zange: Which time, after joining the forum, first comeback, or second comeback?
Superchao: Joining the forum lol. We're still in the hazy mist of 2014.
Superchao: This is why you should do what I did and only leave once, to make it easier to catalogue.
Zange: I probably should have done that but that's not how I roll lmao
Zange: But yes, after joining the forum, it felt pretty great.
Superchao: You got to make friends! Maybe possibly
Zange: What I mostly did was just play games of mafia (back when that forum was still alive)
Superchao: Ah, mafia. Imagine telling it to new users what it was like back then.
Zange: Made friends through that though! Even though I suck at mafia but I still enjoyed it!!
Superchao: Sadly, like Icarus, Stooben flew too close to the sun, and Mafia fell through his grip and into the sea.
Superchao: I'll let you in on a little secret:
Superchao: Everyone sucked at mafia. Some people were just better at pretending they didn't!
Zange: Ahaha, makes me feel a little bit better about that then.
Superchao: Anything in particular stand out about the first run?
Zange: I think what I remember most was that big Skype chat from mid-2015.
Superchao: >skype
Superchao: oh god
Superchao: that.
Zange: Those were good times, had some interesting conversations.
Superchao: I remember it mostly for the fallout of the bad times I had to deal with as a mod.
Superchao: Different perspectives.
Superchao: People openly and blatantly saying in front of the staff that they planned to bait someone into getting banned.
Zange: Understandable, rip Perch's sanity during that time period.
Superchao: So what brought on the next departure?
Zange: Well...
Zange: It's not something I really want to get into so let's just say a bit of a falling out happened between me and someone else.
Zange: I pretty much felt like leaving was my only way out.
Superchao: I understand, and we shall speak no more of it.
Superchao: The real question, and the one I've always wondered more, is what brought you back?
Zange: Well, I started to miss the place.
Zange: And by the time I came back, tensions had died down enough to where I felt I could come back safely.
Zange: So I told myself "Okay, we'll give this another go"
Superchao: And then you did! And I thiiink you've stuck so far?
Zange: I lasted another year and then I left again, but coming back the second time I stayed for good.
Superchao: Oh right.
Superchao: For some reason I always forget about that other year leaving. Anything happen then, or just boredom?
Zange: I think the one noteworthy thing before the second leaving was I made up with the person I had the fallout with and we've been really good friends ever since. (which I'm extremely thankful for)
Superchao: The best solution!
Superchao: The second best is to murder them, but that's not always viable.
Zange: Who do I look like, some killing game fiend?
Superchao: Well............. yes.
Zange: Okay fair, but I'll have you know I've only murdered once and I admitted to it after being caught on to because I was a chicken.
Superchao: The power move is to kill, and then admit immediately, so everyone wonders if it's a bluff.
Zange: See, I would do that, but I'm not a confrontational person whatsoever and I'd cry from being grilled about it by everyone else.
Superchao: Fair point!
Superchao: So, you happy with the most recent comeback, then?
Zange: Oh, definitely.
Superchao: Excellent.
Superchao: Now I can chain you to the wall and force you to stick around for the entire lifetime of Mach Speed Mayhem!
Superchao: JUST AS PLANNED!
Zange: OH NO AAAA
Superchao: What did cause you to leave and come back that time?
Zange: Well, the reason I stated for leaving the second time was me not feeling like I really fit in with the community much anymore.
Superchao: Oh thaaat's the one I remember!
Superchao: Yeah, the one with the post!
Superchao: It was the first one i forgot lol
Zange: Yea this is kinda the big one lel
Zange: But part of it was also I wanted to focus more on school and theatre a bit more.
Zange: Which, for school at least didn't go so well because I got C's in two classes in the last third of the year.
Superchao: Oof. It happens.
Superchao: How'd theatre go?
Zange: Before I answer that I have to give a little preface:
Zange: The spring after I left we did Oklahoma as our musical.
Zange: Pretty much everyone hated it for one reason or another, myself included, mainly because none of us really knew it.
Zange: But considering the actual performances went alright, I'd say the theatre part of my focus was a success at least.
Superchao: What's theater if you don't retire in despair and regret, anyway?
Zange: Who even knows, theatre is crazy stuff sometimes.
Superchao: So what brought you back this time, when you were sure this is the end my friend
Zange: Well, I guess somewhere deep in my heart I always had the intention to come back at some point.
Zange: Which I think I only realized after Mfan got me into lbchat.
Zange: And there were a number of occasions after that point where I said to myself I'd come back then but ultimately didn't.
Superchao: And then you did, to your dismay
Zange: Yeah, although I guess it wasn't to my dismay.
Zange: Once I figured out when I would come back I kinda had to force myself to log on to the forums.
Zange: But since then I haven't once regretted it.
Superchao: It happens. It's a lot harder to do something to begin with than to face the aftermath, good or bad.
Superchao: The whole thing where you don't know what's going to happen locks you.
Superchao: At least if you try and things go to shit you can go "well this is bad, nothing to do but ride it out"
Zange: Exactly.
Superchao: Anything in particular you really like about being here all these times?
Zange: I guess the that because of all the gaps I've had, everything that's happened on and off site since joining is set in like a really distinct era for me.
Zange: Like I remember when I first joined the forums and Smash 4 was all the rage.
Superchao: Smash What Now?
Superchao: There is only Melee and Ultimate.
Superchao: We have always been at war with Brawl.
Zange: Or coming back the second time and seeing so many new faces.
Zange: So many things I can think of are just set in these distinct time periods which is nice bc my memory is a hot mess otherwise.
Superchao: It happens!
Superchao: "TheGreatBlockyBoo" and "Superchao" feel almost like two distinct people to me at this point.
Superchao: How weird it must be to you who is new to ponder of the time when Blocky was my hip new name and Superchao was old and busted
Zange: Sounds like a far simpler time to me.
Superchao: It was.
Superchao: So, speaking of Mario!
Superchao: You mentioned Mario Kart earlier. Still a big fan?
Zange: Not as much as I was, but yes.
Zange: I'd love to own all the Mario Kart games someday.
Superchao: Even... Arcade GP!?
Zange: If I can find space to put it then why not??
Superchao: Someday I will get to play F-Zero AX. Someday...
Zange: To be fair I haven't played any of the Arcade GP games yet so I guess we're both in the same boat, huh?
Zange: Or relatively similar boats, anyways.
Superchao: Relatively similar, although at least there's more than about 30 Arcade GP cabinets in the continental United States...
Zange: Good point.
Superchao: So, what is your favorite Mario Kart, anyway?
Zange: Ohhh man.
Zange: You realize how hard of a question this is because they all have good things about them???
Superchao: Trust me, it's like if someone asked me to pick my favorite Touhou fangame, aka picking my favorite child
Superchao: So I understand.
Zange: I think I have to go with DS because of nostalgia factor.
Zange: That game was everyone's shit when I was in third grade.
Zange: It's all anyone who had a DS would play if we were stuck inside for recess.
Superchao: The only Mario Kart i ever actually played was Double Dash, and a bit of 64 like fifteen years ago.
Zange: Double Dash is almost like the MacGuffin of Mario Kart to me because it's the only non-arcade one I haven't played ever.
Zange: Not counting 8 Deluxe bc that was a remake
Zange: We never had a GameCube in my house and I don't know anyone who currently has one so Double Dash is my all-time goal right now
Superchao: I have a Gamecube (well, Wii), AND I have Double Dash
Superchao: so
Superchao: start making plans to visit NYC!
Zange: Damn you drive a hard bargain...
Superchao: Is Mario Kart still your favorite section of Mario?
Zange: For sure, though Mario Party is high up there now too.
Superchao: I've never really heard anyone cite Mario Kart in general as their favorite, so I'm curious:
Superchao: What draws you to it?
Zange: I guess all the antics that can happen?
Zange: There's so many ways that your opponents can affect your race through their items and such.
Superchao: Ah, that's interesting - that's actually why I prefer F-Zero! I enjoy the skill basis and lack of random item shenanigans.
Superchao: I think that just comes down to differences between us
Zange: Probably, yeah.
Zange: I think I'm just drawn to all the spontaneity because I have a lot of those tendencies sometimes.
Superchao: That makes sense! Meanwhile I prefer learning through hard work and repetition (just ask me about story mode)
Superchao: So when I'd have to try things over and over due to random item factors...
Zange: Yeah, that's definitely an understandable thing.
Superchao: Any mario games or subseries you don't like, however?
Zange: Hmm, probably the main series games. I'm just not that good at them, y'know?
Superchao: Huh, did not expect that answer! I suppose one just assumes people like Mario... even if that's not always that accurate.
Zange: It's probably a more of I don't like sitting and doing one thing for too long than anything
Superchao: Ah, that'd explain it. Mario Kart doesn't really need quite as much time investment, after all.
Zange: Like, if I keep failing a level, I don't like sitting there focused on only that unlit I complete it.
Zange: And yeah, exactly
Superchao: What about other games series or types? Anything really appeal to you?
Zange: Just of games in general?
Superchao: Yeah, like genres.
Zange: I really love games that are story driven, like RPGs and visual novels.
Zange: So games like Danganronpa, Persona, and Undertale are right up my alley
Superchao: Ace Attorney?
Zange: Yeah, Ace Attorney too.
Superchao: An excellent pick. Every so often even when there's no new game I just randomly get really excited about Ace Attorney.
Superchao: What about puzzle games, considering how often you present that one?
Zange: Puzzle games are fun, especially ones that kinda let me tinker around with how I go about solving the puzzles.
Zange: You can imagine how fun Baba is You is for me
Superchao: Considering I've been marathoning that game over the past few days... trust me when I say I understand.
Zange: Ahaha, I see. It's probably one of the most charming games I've played recently due to it's sort of uniqueness
Superchao: One of the things I think is most fascinating is how much the game makes you associate certain objects with certain properties in order to trip you up on later levels when you don't think outside the box
Superchao: You get used to BABA is YOU, FLAG is WIN, ROCK is PUSH, WALL is STOP, but everything is interchangeable and only defined by the properties it is given
Superchao: So if you get stuck on "but baba has to be you for this level" it really can put a dent in solving
Zange: Yeah, and I'll admit that's gotten me stuck a few good times before
Superchao: It's okay, same here. I remember one level where I kept trying to make Flag into Win and only cleared it because I did something else entirely with Flag
Zange: Sounds like a happy little accident. At least it got you to the solution!
Superchao: Yep!
Superchao: Out of curiosity, since you constantly present puzzle game with jigsaw puzzles
Superchao: Do you personally like such?
Zange: I do but it's been ages since I last solved one, I should really buy some jigsaws sometime...
Superchao: I have a few! They're mostly town scenes and the like but I've got a few that stand out nicely
Superchao: One of my personal favorites is a super mario galaxy one with cool art. Just another reason you need to visit
Zange: Ooooo neat!!
Superchao: Lemme see if I can find it...
Superchao: Ah ha, this!
Zange: Ahhhh that's really cool!!
Zange: Time to fly to New York now
Superchao: What draws you to puzzle stuff in general? Just the ability to put your brain to work and not have to worry about precision platforming for the like?
Zange: I think that's pretty much it.
Zange: My reaction times suck so that's part of why I don't like platformers, you have to have dead-on reactions sometimes.
Superchao: Yeah, some of my favorite hard platformers are literally
Superchao: "please perform this entire sequence of 50 inputs with frame-perfect precision"
Zange: But with all puzzles in general, I can just focus on an end result and not worry about how I get there most times
Superchao: what about that one mario jigsaw puzzle that's like 90% red
Zange: Oh jeez, that's a thing??
Zange: But the same thing applies, I just have to be paying a hell of a lot more attention so I know if pieces fit properly.
Superchao: I overestimated how much red but that's a lot of red.
Zange: Wow, that is a lot...
Superchao: It sure is. Out of curiosity, do you have a preference toward any types of puzzles? Like, say, compare jigsaw to sudoku.
Superchao: That kind of thing.
Zange: I'm way better at puzzles that don't involve numbers.
Zange: So sudoku and whatever the derivative with addition is called are not my thing
Zange: Aha! Kakuro! That's what that derivative is called!!
Superchao: Yeah, that one. MATH
Zange: Math is the bane of my existence tbh
Zange: But for puzzles I actually do like...
Zange: I absolutely love logic squares (or whatever their actual name is)
Superchao: Those things where you have a grid and are given X amount of clues and have to figure out who did what where and when?
Zange: Yes, those things!!
Superchao: I love them too!
Superchao: I've honestly considered joining Fun Stuff to make some.
Superchao: They're really good.
Zange: They're so much fun and I haven't done them in years aaa
Superchao: well i know now what i must do... for the august issue
Zange: Please do that would be amazing
Superchao: I shall! How can I ignore my fans like this?
Zange: Ahaha, I feel honored.
Superchao: Hmmm... you know what else we HAVE to talk about when it comes to you?
Superchao: Anime.
Zange: You're completely right there.
Superchao: So, how'd you get into it?
Zange: Oh boy, well...
Zange: I was a young child on the YouTubes and I come across this Mario fan series thing.
Zange: It was called something along the lines of The Adventures of Rosalina and Peach
Zange: And it was all in Spanish so I understood none of it
Zange: And the creator took a lot of the villains for the show from an anime that at the time I didn't know the name of
Superchao: and that anime... was albert einstein
Zange: Ha I wish but no
Zange: I did some research and this anime was Mermaid Melody
Zange: And thus I fell into a pit that I still live in to this day
Superchao: I've heard of Mermaid Melody for a couple of reasons, and that takes me back to like 2006
Superchao: What a ride
Zange: Oh boy, sounds like a time
Superchao: Any particular animes that were important, formative ones?
Zange: I think Corpse Party and Madoka Magica were the first big ones, they were my first big steps outside of what I was used to in anime.
Superchao: >Corpse Party
Zange: Which, at that point was strictly bubbly and cutesy shows
Superchao: well, that sounds like a wild ride
Zange: It was at the time
Superchao: What made you interested in trying those shows?
Zange: For Madoka Magica, it was on recommendation from someone else.
Zange: They said is was magical girl but nothing like I was used to and uh
Superchao: Oh
Superchao: They probably did that on purpose I bet
Zange: tbh I have no idea what I was expecting from that statement, but it was certain different than what I got, in a good way though
Zange: As for Corpse Party, it was actually a Mafia game themed after it on another site (except they called it Wolf and not Mafia)
Superchao: I take it those awakened an Undiscovered Interest in you?
Zange: Oh yes, indeed.
Zange: I think sometime after I watched Corpse Party, I watched Another, which is also in that kind of genre
Superchao: The real question is if you read Junji Ito yet.
Zange: Y'know, I've been meaning to but I haven't yet.
Superchao: It's pretty solid horror! Classic stuff.
Zange: Hmm, definitely gonna have to check that out real soon then!
Superchao: What about Black Butler? I remember you mentioning that one.
Zange: Ah, yes!
Zange: When I first started watching that, it was a major part of my life, and even today, the Book of stuff is still among my favorites.
Zange: It's kind of shaped my tastes in anime to what they are today.
Superchao: Go on!
Zange: If Madoka and CP were dipping my toes into more serious shows, Black Butler was a headdive in.
Zange: I don't think I'd have been remotely interested in say, shows like Kara no Kyoukai or Bungou Stray Dogs otherwise.
Superchao: What drew you to it to begin with
Zange: I honestly don't remember, it was probably recommended to me based on a few other shows I watched before then.
Zange: But once I started, I couldn't get enough.
Superchao: And you never escaaaaped
Zange: Hell, it's the only reason I really started reading manga, because I wanted to get caught up on Black Butler's manga
Zange: Yeah pretty much lmao
Superchao: Best BB character?
Zange: Hands down, Grell Sutcliffe
Superchao: I don't know the context, but I'm sure there are readers who do, and I wanted to get it out there for them.
Zange: Quite understandable
Superchao: Any other shows you'd recommend to the readers at home?
Zange: Kara no Kyoukai for sure, the music is absolutely beautiful and the series itself is really interesting
Zange: Aside from that...
Zange: Probably Soredemo Sekai was Utsukushii, it's hands down one of the most beautiful romance animes I've ever seen.
Zange: And Rozen Maiden as well, I haven't watched it in years but I remember the Maidens all being really unique in their character.
Zange: ...I am just now realizing just how much anime I've watched since getting into it all those years ago and good lord it's a LOT.
Superchao: Rozen Maiden is one of those things I always associate with the early 2000s, in a good way.
Superchao: Like, just an iconic part of internet culture around that time.
Zange: I'm way too young to remember any of that, but I do remember someone an another forum I was on at the time was really obsessed with it.
Zange: And this was about early 2014, mind you
Superchao: My god. How much longetivity it has!
Zange: If you think about it, it's almost insanely impressive.
Superchao: It is.
Superchao: I think that about gives our readers a good view of you and anime, though.
Superchao: If there's one more thing I wanna ask about...
Superchao: What's your passion for theater come from?
Zange: Oh boy, story time...
Zange: The thing that got me started on theatre in the first place was Missoula Children's Theatre.
Zange: They come to my town every year and cast local kids in whatever production they do that year
Zange: And when I was in Girl Scouts, we'd go watch those shows every year.
Zange: So it got me thinking, "Hey, if these kids can do it, why can't I?"
Zange: And when I was in 6th grade, I auditioned for one of those productions and made it in, and I've been hooked ever since.
Zange: I think the main reason I'm so passionate about it is because it gives me a chance to play all kinds of different characters.
Zange: All having their own stories, all coming from different walks of life...
Superchao: and all of them either crossdressing or dying tragically?
Superchao: Or is that just Shakespeare?
Zange: I mean, in the musical we did this year one of my best guy friends had to wear a maid dress in one scene
Zange: So take that as you will!
Zange: Anyways, it's nice to get the chance to escape some of the monotony of my normal life by playing other characters.
Superchao: Makes sense. Everyone's gotta have an outlet somewhere!
Zange: Exactly.
Superchao: Anyhow.
Superchao: This has been a good interview.
Superchao: But I just gotta know:
Superchao: Is this the last question?
Zange: Hmm, anything is the last the last question if you want it to be, no?
Superchao: Very true, very true.
Superchao: Thanks for coming!
Zange: Thanks for having me!

Conclusion:
It's like I said. When someone leaves the community and comes back, they tend to have a lot to notice with changes. But that's no reason to not ask about other things, too! I hope you enjoyed this interview as much as I enjoyed doing the interviewing!

Hello everyone! Welcome to NIWA Spotlight, a focused list that covers one article from each of our partnered wikis that need help. These can range from articles that need more information or created to images that need replacing or uploaded. Notice something on a different wiki you can't fix or aren't sure how to and want to get the word out? Let me know on my talk page or in this forum topic and it will be added to a future issue. For our Mario-related topics, check out the current The 'Shroom Spotlight!

Supertoad64 and Cookies and Crème both worked on WikiBound's Super Smash Bros. Melee article so it looks nicer. GregoryTheGamer attempted to replace the N64 image of Kongo Jungle, but it needs an improvement itself; good try though! Maybe it'll be replaced properly later.

  • The F-Zero Wiki is unlocked (finally), but still undergoing an update. It can be edited, but will not be added to this list until things are finished.
