SS/CS/TOK use?[edit]

I've never actually seen this template used for the three modern PM games. Sticker Star only has one key item, the Book of Sealing, which doesn't have a template. Color Splash articles, such as Tea Recipe Book, and The Origami King articles, such as Suite Key, use item infobox instead. Considering that there aren't many items from the first three games used in the later ones (items like Mushrooms take the form of stickers or cards in SS/CS), I'm not sure what the point of adding functionality for them is. Bumping this. Any idea? Should we start using this on CS/TOK item articles? Scrooge200 (talk) PMCS Mustard Cafe Sign.png 02:00, August 15, 2021 (EDT)

Delete?[edit]

I don't really see a point in keeping the template around. It only has "description" fields, which aren't instantly clear that they are a data-sourced string of text, not a user-applied one. Then if the item appears only once, like the Golden Meal, the only field used is the description from its only game of appearance, something that the standard item infobox already covers for items with only a single appearance. Delete this template[edit]

Do not delete 1-4
A few days ago, I asked if this template can be deleted, as I question the necessity of it. It just shows a sprite of an item and their in-game description for each appearance in the Paper Mario series. The in-game descriptions can just be listed under a Profiles section.

I generally don't like seeing infoboxes in the History section. Take the Gold Bar article, for example. Why have two infobox templates, one atop the other, when the in-game description can just be stated elsewhere in the article. Also, the two sprites look very similar, and they would work better in a gallery because it is not immediately evident to the reader that the Gold Bar sprite on the left is from The Thousand-Year Door, while the one on the right is from Super Paper Mario.

Support[edit]

  1. Super Game Gear (talk) As proposer.

Oppose[edit]

  1. Swallow (talk) It is still convenient for the articles that use it.
  2. Camwoodstock (talk) Deleting this feels unwise, seeing as this is still in use; in addition, there's not really a better way to concisely showcase what an item's in-game description and appearance are unless we were to convert this into a horizontal infobox, which is both not a deletion and is more of a lateral change in the first place. To say nothing of the many recipes shared between multiple games, where the infobox can account for multiple games at once; using a bunch of embedded images or galleries would honestly be more convoluted than what we're already doing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  3. Niiue (talk) Deleting the template would mean getting rid of useful information (i.e. the item descriptions). This template was created because neither {{Item infobox}} or {{PM recipe infobox}} were sufficient: the former only supports a single item description, and the latter doesn't support descriptions (and doesn't work for non-recipe items anyway). I don't see how deleting this template would benefit the wiki.
  4. ThePowerPlayer (talk) Like {{LM portrait infobox}}, why upend something that fulfills its intended function while being both descriptive and concise?

Comments[edit]

I request this not be outright deleted no matter what; if it comes to pass that it is decided to be unnecessary, please use {{abandoned}}. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:40, January 6, 2024 (EST)

Well, it obviously won't be deleted until it is removed from every page. What would be the justification of using that template? Super Game Gear (talk) 14:43, January 6, 2024 (EST)
Not deleting from the history of the pages it is on? Seems straightforward... Listen, I've been having a LOT of issues recently finding old things on archive.org. The more things are future-proofed, the better. Ensuring it can't be future proofed, I will call "reprehensible" and "heinous" after my recent difficulties. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:46, January 6, 2024 (EST)
Well if the template's obsolete, there's no reason to keep it around, then. Super Game Gear (talk) 14:49, January 6, 2024 (EST)
History is history. Deleting that is inherently bad. Especially when you're looking through page history and what used to be a table is now a redlink with nothing to it. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 14:50, January 6, 2024 (EST)

What about {{PM recipe infobox}}? The two templates overlap but neither is a substitute for the other. I'd like to merge the two templates' parameters. (Also I see no reason to limit the latter to the so-called "recipes", which are a vague concept anyway.) --Dine2017 (talk) 21:26, January 8, 2024 (EST)

We noticed that ourselves, actually. We feel the "PM item" is more useful overall, but we think a merge of the two makes a lot more sense than deleting one over the other. ~Camwoodstock (talk) 23:59, January 8, 2024 (EST)
Getting rid of {{PM recipe infobox}} would make the most sense, imo. Compared to {{PM item infobox}}, that template is rather lacking in that it doesn't support a description field, and doesn't really work for items that aren't recipes (i.e. most of them). I'd support a merge. Niiue - Who has lost his tail? 02:46, January 9, 2024 (EST)

Now with the remake...[edit]

Perhaps that proposal above happened too soon. Paper Mario's item sprites were 32x32px without the reductive cropping that has been done to the images on here, while TTYD's and SPM's were 40x40px. TTYDr's, meanwhile, are 100x100px: so way, way too big to be sharing space with one of each of the others. The template made sense when it was covering merely three games since the SS-TOK ones were inexplicably not added, but this is getting too much, too full. If not deleted, they should at the very least be split into a one-game-per-usage manner, and perhaps horizontalized. Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) 15:02, May 28, 2024 (EDT)

I agree. Currently, some of the special items such as Ultra Stone use {{item infobox}}, which allows only one description and doesn't tell which game it is from. This template allows multiple descriptions and multiple sprites, but the sprites are still unnamed. Also it doesn't allow multiple names. A split (at least visually) would be ideal.
By the way, should we use this template ( {{PM item infobox}} ) for special items too? --Dine2017 (talk) 00:19, May 29, 2024 (EDT)
