Template:Levelbox Be Afraid of the Dark is the first level of Shadowville and the forty-second level overall of Yoshi's Crafted World. Bunmawashi Dolls make their first and only appearance in this level. These dolls chase Yoshi around in the dark with axes, are stunned by light, and cannot be defeated. This level is one of two levels where a Yoshi will show a scared expression while idle (the other level being Haunted Maker Mansion).

Overview

Front side

To start, there are two Fangs, then a Message Block with a few Zombie Guys nearby. If Yoshi strikes the Message Block, it simply reads, "If he sees you, run away...". Nearby, there is a set of eight coins with a creepy doll watching in the background. These dolls are known as Bunmawashi Dolls, and cannot be defeated whatsoever. If this doll spots Yoshi, it comes out of the background, breaks through the door below it, and starts chasing Yoshi. There is a light nearby serving as a safe spot for Yoshi, as Bunmawashi Dolls are stunned by light. After that is a regular Shy Guy below a Winged Cloud containing five hearts. In this area, Wall Lakitus can be seen behind the buildings in the background, throwing Spiny Eggs at Yoshi through the windows. Yoshi can defeat Wall Lakitus by throwing his eggs right back at them. There is another Shy Guy here with a hidden Winged Cloud, which Yoshi can hit to make coins appear, including three Red Coins. There is then a Fang, then two more Zombie Guys, with a Bunmawashi Doll at the end. There is a beacon of light just to the right.

Here, there are two Zombie Guys and a Winged Cloud. If Yoshi hits it, a bridge appears which leads to coins, a Smiley Flower, and a Bunmawashi Doll. To the right is another Bunmawashi Doll in the middle of four blocks, each containing a red coin. Yoshi can break the blocks himself, or have the doll break it with its axe. There is a hidden Winged Cloud just above the doll Yoshi can hit to make a row of coins, with a 10-Coin in the middle, drop down. After that are a few Fangs and the first Checkpoint Bell.

Between the next two Shy Guys, there is a hidden Winged Cloud containing five more hearts. To the right of this area is another hidden Winged Cloud Yoshi can hit to get five red coins. To the left of a stack of blocks, between two buildings, there is a Winged Cloud Yoshi can hit to make several coins appear. To the right of the next light beacon is a Winged Cloud containing five hearts. There are Bunmawashi Dolls just up ahead, with a few Zombie Guys along the way. Just before the next light, there is a hidden Winged Cloud Yoshi can hit to get the second Smiley Flower. Yoshi then enters an area with an Egg Block and three Winged Clouds. The left cloud contains five hearts. The middle cloud contains coins. Hitting the right cloud reveals a bridge. However, as soon as the bridge appears, Bunmawashi Dolls burst in, hidden in the background.

Shortly after is another Message Block. Hitting this block reads "He'll come from behind". After Yoshi reads this message, a Bunmawashi Doll suddenly bursts through a closed window in the building behind, revealing a hidden present box containing multiple coins, as well as one red coin. Below the Message Block is another doll next to a Winged Cloud, which Yoshi can hit to reveal a third Smiley Flower. Past a few Zombie Guys is a light. A building can be seen here, in the background, with three Lakitus and a Winged Cloud behind the windows. Hitting this cloud drops down coins. After this comes the second Checkpoint Bell.

Just after the Checkpoint Bell is a Time Cloud. If Yoshi hits it, the screen flips to reveal several Wall Lakitus in the windows of two different buildings. Most of the Lakitus hold up Fooly Flowers, though one Lakitu near the bottom of the left building holds up a Smiley Flower Yoshi can toss an egg at to collect. After this is an Egg Block, with a Bunmawashi Doll suddenly dropping down out of nowhere. Up ahead is a Winged Cloud containing five more hearts. To the right is a doll, some coins, and three red coins. Going to the left reveals another doll, more coins, and another Smiley Flower. More to the right is a second Time Cloud with a Bunmawashi Doll just below. Hitting this cloud reveals seven apples in range of the doll. Eating all of them before time runs out rewards Yoshi with yet another Smiley Flower.

Yoshi is now close to the goal. As Yoshi makes his way to the goal, however, several Bunmawashi Dolls show up, some from the background, forcing him to pick up the pace. Along the way, Yoshi can collect the last red coins. There is also a Winged Cloud in a beacon of light. If Yoshi hits it, the last Smiley Flower appears, shortly before the light shuts off. The goal is just up ahead.

Flip side

  • The cyan Poochy Pup is to the left of one of the first Bunmawashi Dolls, where three red coins are usually found.
  • The black Poochy Pup is in the long ramp section, peeking out of a high window in one of the background buildings.
  • The pink Poochy Pup is also peeking out of a window in a background building, among Wall Lakitus.

Collectibles

Smiley Flowers

  • Smiley Flower 1: There is a Winged Cloud Yoshi must hit to reveal a bridge leading up to the left. Here, there are coins, a Smiley Flower, and a Bunmawashi Doll, which starts chasing after Yoshi as soon as he collects the flower.
  • Smiley Flower 2: Near the end of the long ramp section, before the area with the three Winged Clouds, in the form of a hidden Winged Cloud.
  • Smiley Flower 3: Below the second Message Block, next to a Bunmawashi Doll, in the form of a Winged Cloud.
  • Smiley Flower 4: Right after the second Checkpoint Bell is a Time Cloud Yoshi must hit. Doing this flips the screen to reveal several Wall Lakitus peeking out of the windows of two different buildings, most of them holding up a Fooly Flower at least once. Yoshi must spot a Wall Lakitu holding up a Smiley Flower near the bottom of the left building, then toss an egg at the flower to collect it.
  • Smiley Flower 5: Exploring to the left after the next Egg Block reveals coins, the Smiley Flower, and a Bunmawashi Doll.
  • Smiley Flower 6: Shortly after the fifth flower is a second Time Cloud. Hitting this cloud reveals seven apples near a Bunmawashi Doll. Eating all the apples in the allotted time makes the sixth Smiley Flower appear.
  • Smiley Flower 7: Just before the end of the level, in the last beam of light is a Winged Cloud. Hitting this cloud reveals the last Smiley Flower and turns off the light.

Three more Smiley Flowers are awarded for collecting at least 100 coins in the level, completing the level with 20 hearts, and collecting all 20 Red Coins. In the flip side, three are awarded for bringing all three Poochy Pups to the goal, and one more for doing so within three minutes and thirty seconds.
