The Giana Sister's part should be removed since it is a online game. Goombob Mini Goomba 19:03, 23 July 2013 (EDT)

It's not, it's on Commodore 64.
--driftmaster130 (TalkEdits) 19:05, 23 July 2013 (EDT)
Even if it was online, we'd still keep it because it's a game officially acknowledged by Nintendo. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 01:10, 24 July 2013 (EDT)

Super Mario Bros. X

The C&D the game author received was actually because Nintendo wanted the domain name for the website where he was hosting his game. MFGG has been hosting free unauthorized Mario knockoffs for almost 15 years and has even been mentioned on TV and nobody else there has ever gotten a C&D from Nintendo. I'm going to see if I can get a source on the nature of the game's C&D. - Puddin(T|C) EC3SN.gif

Hence why the article said "Redigit claimed". But if you get a better source than a "claim", then it's a great thing. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 20:17, 16 May 2014 (EDT)
Redigit only claimed that he got a C&D, but it was never confirm. Fans speculate he was sick of the fanbase and made it up so he would be left alone. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 21:01, 16 May 2014 (EDT)
Mario: Check your edit histories. I made this complaint on 18:30, May 16th. Glowsquid added "claimed" to the article AFTER my comment (his edit was at 18:40, May 16th.) I'm fine with the way the article is worded now. (I am still a little annoyed that most people actually believe the guy got a C&D from Nintendo when no proof was ever provided, but that's besides the point.) - Puddin(T|C) EC3SN.gif

Organization

As SiFi brought up, how should this page be organized? I'm thinking either alphabetically or chronically. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 16:27, 22 August 2014 (EDT)

I'm for chronogically myself. --Glowsquid (talk) 17:05, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
Any other opinions? BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 18:02, 22 August 2014 (EDT)
With the glitch pages being arranged in alphabetical order I feel pages like this should also be in alphabetical order. But as long as the information is presented in a logical way I'm happy. Yoshi876 (talk)

Project M?

Has Nintendo made acknowledged the existence of the Smash mod? The PM article on SmashWiki says a few things about it: http://www.ssbwiki.com/Project_M#Response_from_Nintendo

Should it be added to this list?
The preceding unsigned comment was added by FGarcia (talk).

I know the word "acknowledged" has some wiggle room (and it probably wasn't the best choice in retrospect), but when I proposed the concept of this page on proposals, what I had in mind was fan games/bootlegs that were taken down or had received message from Nintendo or one of its hired legal firms directly. Just censoring the name of the mod without going after it is a bit of a weak fit, imo. --Glowsquid (talk) 16:12, 18 November 2016 (EST)
As far as I know, there hasn't been an official response. It even says so on the link you put there. So, doesn't belong here anyhow. If there were an official response, it would likely go on List of Mario-related controversies as, given Nintendo's history with legal asshattery, it will show backlash. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 17:37, 18 November 2016 (EST)
I think the only official response to Project M is through Miiverse. If users use the abbreviation "PM" or outright say the name, they will be banned (either momentarily or indefinitely, I don't remember) for discussing "criminal activity." Unfortunately, this has resulted in erroneous bans such as abbreviating "Paper Mario" or for the time of day from noon to midnight. It'll also result in some problems should my Power Master series have a Miiverse page in the future... The "criminal activity" part pretty much shows Nintendo's stand on Project M. EDIT: The thing is, this isn't a Mario knockoff. It's a Smash Bros. knockoff. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:42, 18 November 2016 (EST)
Yes, but I wouldn't consider that an official action per se. Anyhow, I don't even think this is a knockoff (as the word implies, knockoffs are standalone games that are often bootlegts). It's a game modification that requires the original base game to work at all. Icon showing how many lives Mario has left. From Super Mario 64 DS. It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 17:56, 18 November 2016 (EST)
...Right. "Knockoff" is the wrong word to use here. It's a mod, and I don't think Nintendo really cares for those much. Alex95sig1.pngAlex95sig2.png 17:57, 18 November 2016 (EST)
I get that it's more a Smash Bros. knockoff than a Mario one, but you guys do cover Smash significantly in this wiki and so I figured it might have a place here under the "Fan projects" section. The Miiverse bans do say something about Nintendo's thoughts on PM, and I believe that during one E3 Reggie Fils-Aime or some other person responded to one's question concerning the mod. In the end I wouldn't be opposed to adding it to the article. FGarcia (talk) 00:21, 30 November 2016 (EST)

ROM hacks

I just want to ask do ROM hacks count? because I want to add to this article. King Boo in Mario Party 8MKDSFTalk!King Boo in Mario Party 8

Only if they have been acknowledged by Nintendo - takedown requests and copyright claims apply. Hello, I'm Time Turner. 13:55, 10 September 2017 (EDT)

Adding Super Mario Bros. 35 in Mario Royale Section?

Mario Royale, a battle royale based game was completely removed due to copyright but Nintendo officialy made an Super Mario Bros. based battle royale. If I make sentence to this section? CrazyUberEngineer (talk) 12:54, September 9, 2020 (EDT)

What does "If I make sentence to this section?" mean? If it means "Can I add it?" or something similar to that, than yes. --JumpPumpkinPlant SMW.pngDarkNightPiranha Plant in Fall 12:58, September 9, 2020 (EDT)
Or Can I add it? CrazyUberEngineer (talk) 14:33, September 9, 2020 (EDT)
Yes. --JumpPumpkinPlant SMW.pngDarkNightPiranha Plant in Fall 15:15, September 9, 2020 (EDT)

SuperMarioLogan

Can you add in SuperMarioLogan to this page and how it got a cease and desist from Nintendo?--24.44.76.88 20:03, February 28, 2021 (EST)

I don't think it qualifies as a knockoff, and that's not the reason why Nintendo sent a cease and desist in the first place. It's covered here for the time being. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 20:09, February 28, 2021 (EST)
It qualifies as a parody, not a knockoff. Same goes for SMG4. Toadette icon CTTT.pngFont of Archivist Toadette's signature(T|C) 20:48, February 28, 2021 (EST)

As the guy who pitched (but did not launch) the page, the idea was to have somewhere to list instances where Nintendo cracked down on uses of the Mario IP by third-parties. As such, it doesn't really matter if those youtube videos are not paid products or brand themselves as parody because the process is the same: SML used the Mario characters from his videos, was not paid for or authorized by Nintendo to do it and consequently Nintendo cracked down on his content. It's no different than the company C&Ding a fan game, and it makes more sense to list the event here than on the controversies page. --Glowsquid (talk) 12:39, March 1, 2021 (EST)

Fair enough. Should we move MariCAR here too, then? --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 13:28, March 1, 2021 (EST)
MariCar stan stay there because it's in the section for lawsuits and Nintendo did file serious legal action against the company (but it should also be listed here since it's also an instance of what I described because things are funny like that). --Glowsquid (talk) 14:48, March 1, 2021 (EST)

Rename the article's name to "List of unofficial Mario-related media acknowledged by Nintendo"

Template:SettledTPP Template:ProposalOutcome So, for context:

The term "knockoff" is widely used to refer to all kinds of counterfeit, bootleg media and cheap imitations thereof, but the addition of the fan projects page just does not line up with the article's title, as they're almost never knockoffs.

To reflect the fan projects covered on the wiki (and a very few pages from the games page being inconsistent with the title) I think a more inclusive name for the article is needed. It's not the best title I could come up with, so it's subject to change. And if possible, the redirects to the article should be changed akin to the potential new name.

  1. Abst (talk) What I said above.
  2. Hewer (talk) Per proposal.
  3. OhoJeeOnFire (talk) I mean, it is quite obvious that this choice makes the most sense.
  4. Archivist Toadette (talk) I'd even take it a step further and advocate for adding "knockoff" to the list of frequently misused terms.

After reading https://tfwiki.net/wiki/IP_theft, I've been thinking, this page could be expanded a lot more than a simple list of C&Ds. You could add stuff like

  • A general explanation of types of derivative content (wheter it's commercially-sold bootlegs or not-for-profit fan content) and Nintendo's relationship to them
  • Instances where fan content seeped back into official Mario material (licensed or otherwise)
  • A section dealing with the misconception that Nintendo needs to C&D every Mario fan-work or fan upload of official ressources ASAP or it could lose the Mario copyright, since that's such a common claim.

If there's a concensus favourable to the suggestion, I could draft such a page. I think "Derivative material" would be a good name for it. What does everyone think? --Glowsquid (talk) 10:17, February 4, 2022 (EST)

Could be interesting, I'd support that. --Waluigi's head icon in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Too Bad! Waluigi Time! 14:29, February 5, 2022 (EST)
I think that'd be a great idea. Niiue - Who has lost his tail? 14:34, February 5, 2022 (EST)
