Casual Nintendo historian. Otherwise an artist and a professional zoologist. Bio degree. I've had an account here since 2012.
I wrote the character sections for Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Super Mario Odyssey. I contributed much of the article for Super Mario Sunshine and am currently working on Super Mario Galaxy.
I have been a fan of Nintendo since a very young age. My first Mario games (and three of the first video games I ever owned) were Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, Super Mario 64 DS, and Mario Kart DS. These games were good company for a young kid who moved around a lot and had difficulty keeping long-lasting friends.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I sequentially played some of my favorite games in the Super Mario series to 100% completion. This includes, in order, Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. I will complete this marathon with Super Mario Odyssey. It's been really fun so far! These are great games, and I always wanted to marathon a series like this before but never had the time. It has been interesting to see where the series began and where it has ended up. The design philosophies, the characters, the art directions, world building, level design, narrative, etc. All good stuff. It might be fun to write something about it some day.
My favorite video game character is Yoshi.

Name | ![]() ![]() |
---|---|
![]() Bee Eater |
Plants with retractable spikes which try to strike Bee Mario[note 1] with their bulb. |
![]() Big Paragoomba |
Gigantic Paragoombas which float back and forth. They can be defeated with a spin and a kick, just like ordinary Giant Goombas. Although Big Paragoombas technically debuted in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2 marks their first game appearance. |
![]() Choppah |
Vaguely insect-like creatures with propellers round their necks. Choppahs fly in a straight line either horizontally or vertically, and can only be defeated if Yoshi eats them. |
![]() Cosmic Clone |
Shadowy clones of Mario which imitate his movement, causing damage and disappearing if they bump into him. When the path forward is revealed (such as by collecting all Star Chips or Purple Coins, or by activating all Flipswitch Panels in the area) Cosmic Clones vanish and produce Star Bits. |
![]() Digga |
Drill-nosed creatures which plow through the dirt in a circular pattern. They can easily be defeated with a jump or the Spin Drill. Diggas also appear in Digga-Leg's boss fight, where it shoots them out of its underside. |
![]() Elite Octoomba |
Green Octoombas which consecutively shoot two rocks. Elite Octoombas can be defeated by a stomp or a spin, just like their weaker relatives. |
![]() Fizzlit |
Rubbery purple creatures which flatten to generate a puddle of electricity around them. Fizzlits can be defeated with a stomp or a spin. |
![]() Flaptack |
Rotund blue birds with a single horn on their head. Flaptacks ram their heads into the ground with their horn in an attempt to hit Mario, causing them to get stuck if they miss. They can either be kicked or stomped on in this state. |
![]() Flomp |
Thwomp-like panels which can be used as platforms. Flomps periodically flip over in an attempt to throw Mario into a pit of lava. |
![]() Flower Mimic |
Carnivorous plants which can be used as platforms. Flower Mimics prepare to swallow Mario with their rubbery mouths if he does not jump off in time. Mario is damaged and spat out if ingested. |
![]() Gummit |
Green, vaguely mole-like creatures which appear in The Chimp's ice-themed challenges. Gummits are harmless, but need to be bumped into and defeated in order to earn points to complete The Chimp's challenges. The green Gummits offer 10 points when bumped into. |
![]() Golden Gummit |
Gold versions of Gummits, which offer 50 points when bumped into. They appear less frequently than their green relatives. |
![]() Kleptoad |
Blue frog-like creatures which dig out of the ground, spawning infinitely. Kleptoads steal coins and Silver Stars, carrying them above their heads. They can be defeated by having Yoshi eat them or by jumping on their heads. |
![]() Magmaargh |
Gigantic lava monsters which appear out of lava and bite down at whatever lies in front of them. Magmaarghs are made entirely out of liquid and thus can pass through solid objects. |
![]() Magmaw |
Smaller relatives of Magmaarghs which stride through the lava, engulfing stone planetoids in their mouths. Magmaws can pass through solid rocks due to their liquid nature. |
![]() Mattermouth |
Reptilian skulls which eat through the ground. The eaten ground shortly regenerates after the Mattermouth passes. Jumping on a Mattermouth causes them to turn around and eat the floor in the opposite direction. |
![]() Octoboo |
Undead Octoombas which move around in a set pattern. Octoboos are invincible and always appear in groups. Unlike their living counterparts, they do not spit rocks. |
File:Whimp.png Pattan |
Diminutive Whomps which only appear in the Whomp King's boss fight. They are summoned in groups of three or five and chase Mario, falling flat on their faces in an attempt to crush him. Pattans only take a single point of Mario's health and disintegrate upon falling down to attack. |
![]() Prickly Piranha Plant |
A black Spiny Piranha Plant with extra spikes on its head, granting it immunity to being stomped. Prickly Piranha Plant violently slams its head into the ground in an attempt to crush Mario, just like its purple counterpart. It can only be defeated by spinning a rubbery bulb at it, when its head is stuck in the ground. Only one Prickly Piranha Plant appears in the game. |
![]() Pupdozer |
Spiky dinosaur-like enemies which crawl back and forth across a set area. Pupdozers cannot be damaged by jumping on them, but ground-pounding a grate from underneath them flips them over and defeats them. |
![]() Rhomp |
Cylindrical Thwomp-like enemies which roll down a sand slide in an attempt to flatten Mario, forcing him to slide out of the way to dodge them. |
![]() Silver Chomp |
Silver unchained Chain Chomps which roll towards Mario to hit him. Silver Chomps can be defeated by running into one as Rainbow Mario, by pushing one off a cliff while on a Star Ball, or by spinning a rubbery bulb into them. |
![]() Smeech |
Spherical winged creatures which flee from Mario, but upon seeing Yoshi, they float towards him and latch on to his mouth to kiss him, remaining there as long as they can. This prevents Yoshi from using his tongue or eating fruits. Smeeches also kiss Yoshi if he tries to eat one. They can be defeated by simply spinning them when mounting Yoshi, or by stomping or spinning them as Mario. |
![]() Snoodle |
Underwater tube worm-like enemies which lean towards Mario if they get too close in order to block his path. Snoodle can be defeated by shining the light from a Green Shell into them, throwing the shell at them, by shooting two Star Bits at them, or by spinning into one. |
![]() Spiky Gummit |
Spiky purple Gummits which stun Mario if he touches one, costing him time in the Chimp's challenges. |
![]() Swaphopper |
Insect-like shelled enemies which hop sideways into Mario. Swaphoppers only appear in two-dimensional areas with alternating gravity. They possess a spiked shell on one of their sides which is invulnerable to attacks, and a soft underbelly which can be stomped on to defeat them. The alternating gravity means that Swaphoppers alternate between being vulnerable and being immune to attacks when the gravity switches. |
![]() Tongari |
Rare conch-like enemies which slowly move back and forth. Tongari cannot be defeated by any means. |
![]() Twirlip |
Tulip enemies which open their flower to spin around the area. Twirlips can be spinned, stomped, or eaten by Yoshi in their bud form, but can only be defeated with a stomp when spinning. |
