Re:Courtesy

Well, I'm sorry if I called you incompetent. I didn't really mean any harm, I'm just doing my job as quality control for this wiki. It's genuinely hard to distinguish between laziness and genuine effort to make articles better, the former (that being laziness) which irritates far more than doing the best of your abilities. It seems to me that you seem like you're in the latter category, making an effort to make this wiki better. Also, I had no idea that you're a foreign speaker, so I understand that it's tough to get your ideas across in a foreign language. Generally speaking, many people aren't exactly courteous here 100% of the time either, and those rules get broken frequently anyway; I don't think it's a good idea to cite the rules when you're having problems with more experienced users trying (aka me) to have quality control here.

Thanks for voicing your concerns, and keep contributing to MarioWiki. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 20:08, 19 April 2016 (EDT)

It's ok, it was just I'm a new user and especially was a new user, so it kind of made me feel a bit bad and. I don't know, unwelcome? I'm not entirely sure what ideas you're referring to, I thought I'd been pretty elaborate on things, but I guess not? Still, it's good you're doing your job but it was kind of unnecessary to call a new user incompetent behind their back... I made the change because nobody wanted to give me sourcing on Motley's pronouns, so I changed them to they/them since that's what you do in English when you don't know a person's gender or pronouns, I don't need to be a native speaker to know that, not with the internet around :3c I know some people just edit in/out random things for no reason but in my case there was a discussion about it so it wasn't really random, I was worried I'm not allowed to edit it without someone's permission but nobody would give me sources and I didn't wanna take up the whole talk page so I changed it for the time being until somebody proved Motley had canon pronouns, which glowsquid eventually did and reverted it back! As you probably saw, by the way, the edit summary was confusion of why it was made not because it was grammatically incorrect or something... Just because "everyone does it" doesn't mean you should, it's still technically against the rules and it's just, well, flat out rude in general, they're there for a reason... And wait wait, I didn't cite the rules because i was having problems with you having quality control, I cited them because you literally broke several of the courtesy rules which both gives a really bad impression for the wiki (you being a patroller(? I think? Sorry if I'm mistaken dfjghsdjkh) and all) and sets a bad example, I feel like a patroller(??) saying it's ok to break the rules isn't a very good impression on other (especially new) users, no offence of course just uh... Also, don't view yourself higher than me because you've been here longer, you're still able to mess up, which is ok, people mess up all the time! But it's not a bad thing of someone, new or old user, to address it when you do, it's just treating you as an equal.
Thanks for apologizing at least! I'm still kind of confused and I'd appreciate if you elaborated on what you meant a little but, uh, thanks? Thanks!! --Lemmyistrans (talk) 02:08, 20 April 2016 (EDT)
I'm not a Patroller, but users don't necessarily need ranks to impose authority upon others. All the ranks are are people trusted with more general maintenance of the wiki. While it is true that I'm on an equal playing field as you, power-wise, more experience means that I generally know what I'm doing and therefore, I normally don't need to get reminded of rules that I'm aware of. Also, I didn't say you were incompetent behind back, I legitimately did not know the account was owned by you, I thought it was another user unrelated to the IP who didn't care. The rules, on another hand, are just a general guideline, not a strictly-imposed thing; otherwise, too many users would be struck with a reminder that they're acting discourteously. There's a saying that you should know the rules so you can break them properly; this saying applies to the rules we set up here. The reason experienced users get more of a leeway is that they're more trusted and that they've been here longer, so you know that all of their edits are made in good faith. People are complex emotionally, and they would make a whoopsie once in a while, but I personally don't think it's enough to warrant them punitive action. Also, there's no need to constantly apologize, I'm cool with you. ;) BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 16:42, 20 April 2016 (EDT)
Okay? I'm glad you're not angry at me, at least! I was mostly reminding you 'cause you claim you already know the rules yet you still broke them? And doesn't it say on the page that when you break one you may be given a warning? Besides, you shouldn't be discourteous at all, rules or not, it's just, y'know, rude and unpleasant for everyone involved... And that's, uh, literally what behind back means though? To talk behind someone's back means to say bad things to someone about someone else while they're not listening, which is what you (believed) you did...? And I assumed you were a patroller or something of the like since you said you were doing your job as quality control, or something? I'm really confused uh... But still, having more experience doesn't mean you can't do something bad and it especially doesn't excuse it when you do... I wasn't saying we're on an equal scale power-wise, I meant we're equal, as in, nobody's overall superior, above, etc, than the other, just as people not as possitions of power? Also, I'm really confused by "users don't need ranks to impose authority upon others" because? You can't have authority over someone if you're on the same rank? That's sort of what authority means, I'm pretty sure...? Either way, I don't think you should want to impose authority over others at all, especially not on the same rank as you, you can act as a guide which would be helpful for everyone, but to impose authority you don't have seems? Kind of weird? The authority you have over me as a more experienced user is that you know more how the site works, and that's it... You shouldn't use that little authority to escape following the rules set up by the wiki or to call other less experienced users incompetent, an authority is someone who people under that authority should be able to trust, so insulting people under your authority because they don't have that authority is not very authority-y of you if you ask me uh... I'm sorry I feel like I sound mean or insulting I really don't mean to I'm just really? Confused?
Oh also, uh, I'm not entirely sure you, as a regular non-admin user, is allowed to say what rules are or aren't ok to break...? I'm fairly sure you don't get to decide that uh... I'm super confused I think I might talk to an admin soon (I don't have to mention you if you don't want me to!!) just so I can get things figured out... jfghsdjfghskdfh I'm happy you aren't mad at me, I apologize a lot 'cause I'm not super good with words and I don't want to accidentally sound mean or condesending sjfdghkjsdhfkgjdfh sorry!! --Lemmyistrans (talk) 04:15, 22 April 2016 (EDT)
Mini-modding is frowned upon too, so again, stop citing the rules. Please drop it. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 11:55, 22 April 2016 (EDT)
Btw, what I mean to say when I said "you don't need ranks to impose authority on others" I meant to say more experienced people know their way around here better and know what is right and what is wrong and how the wiki works, and most of the time, their reports to actual authority are around 99% legit; they're also taken more seriously than other users. But...we're going in circles in this conversation, so I really think it's best if we just drop it. BabyLuigiFire.pngRay Trace(T|C) 12:44, 22 April 2016 (EDT)

re: Help understanding the rules?

What the user said was indeed Kinda Rude and I do not know what that tangent about experience levels has to do with this. In that respect, if you're still truly offended by what was said, you can give a reminder to the user in question.

That being said, it probably should be left at a reminder at most. Yes, the rules states being insulting is bad, but there's flexibility in how this is enforced because context matters. People may go a bit too far during an heated discussion. People have different thresholds and tolerance for what constitute constructive criticism and good-natured ribbing. People will naturally react to edits they consider poorly-made in a confused or snarky manner. Sometimes it leads to less headaches to informally tell someone "Hey, what you said here hurt me. Could you be more considerate in the future?" and only resort to offical warning when the user in question makes serious personal attacks, or repeated and targetted attacks toward you. Leaving a comment in a publicly viewable and uneditable edit summary in reaction to an edit you made (as opposed to sniping you in unrelated discussions) is not "talking behind one's back". If every perceived sign of agression, irrespective of the context or the gravity of what is said, was immediatly met with a level 1 warning, it would be hell.

So yeah, what I'm saying is, the better thing to do here is to either take the apology for what it is, or give a reminder and go on your merry way. Dwelling on this leads to bad blood, wasted time, and bloated talk pages. Nobody likes that.

(Also, speaking purely personally and not as a member of the staff, could you please tone down on asking questions???? and apologizing!! at every line break? These two elements give a (probably unintended) passive-agressive flavour to your writing and make your talk page contributions tedious to read.) --Glowsquid (talk) 13:12, 23 April 2016 (EDT)

I'm sorry, I didn't want to post things publicly but I don't know how to send things privately, or if it's even possible, but I'll try to find a better way in the future!! I wasn't that offended honestly, it was mostly just that they kind of shouldn't talk behind somebody's back, especially not if it's against the rules, 'cause it's just, well, rude? Like I said, it does constitute as talking behind someone's back because they did not know I was the same person, so as far as they know, they linked an edit I made to someone else calling me incompetent for making it... I'm sorry I don't mean to be tedious, I don't mean to ask a lot of questions it's just a way of typing, and as for questions that's because I am actually for real very confused and unsure of things and I want guidance and confirmation but I'm sorry it's annoying I'll try to stop. Everything with a question mark after it isn't necessarily a severe question, it's more like synonymous with adding "right?" at the end of your sentences, it expresses uncertainty and confusion in need of confirmation, which again I feel pretty greatly on this wiki... As for adding multiple question marks, it's a way of typing, it adds more confusion, but I do agree they can be sometimes used passive-aggressively. And I don't entirely see how apologizing is passive-aggressive, isn't it practically the opposite? I know it's easy to sound passive-aggressive in formal text so that's why I try to make sure to let people know I definitely don't intend to and that if I do I really am sorry which I really actually truly am and I am in this case too... Apologizing is a form of defense mechanism for me, it assures me I don't sound too rude or entitled or something, but I'm really sorry it's tedious and passive-aggressive... Though, to be fair, I've seen users be far more passive-aggressive than apologizing, like using a ton of sarcasm and saying flat out demeaning things? I agree if every level 1 warning was to be met it would be weird, but if that's weird it's a sign the system is broken and in need of fixing, not that it should be ignored... This is a nice wiki, it should make sure to have nice people surrounding it so everyone feels welcome and safe, in my opinion, of course...
mmmmmmm... I think I might leave the wiki, might... I don't feel very welcome by just about anyone, everyone seems to just be overly aggressive especially if breaking the courtesy rules is okay, I feel pretty unsafe around people here and I seem to be bothering a lot of people so I'll just uh... leave I think........ Sorry for bothering you sorry sorry, and sorry if this is guilt trippy I don't mean for it to be in any way, I just thought I'd let you know I'm sorry sorry... --Lemmyistrans (talk) 14:46, 23 April 2016 (EDT)

Reminder

Hello, Lemmyistrans. Good job on your recent uploads, but when uploading files, keep in mind that you must correctly use the {{aboutfile}} template. What you were doing looks like this, and it is an inconvenience for other users to fix up the template. It is simple to learn how to format it correctly. The pre-loaded syntax is shown below.

{{aboutfile
|1=Subject of the image
|2=Where you found the image
|3=Artist
|4=Describe edits, if any
|5=Other versions (use file link)
}}

Just replace the necessary parts with that corresponding information, and remove the entire line for the parameter(s) you don't use. Please consider the above information before uploading more files. If you continue using {{aboutfile}} incorrectly, then a warning will be issued. Thank you for reading, and keep contributing.

File:SMB Axe.gif was uploaded with this problem. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) (Stats - Contribs) 16:26, 25 August 2016 (EDT)

Ah, ok, I did find the aboutfile part to be really confusing, I'll fix it right away!--Lemmyistrans (talk) 16:44, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
Wait, edit, I noticed it's apparently a duplicate, so I'll just delete it entirely! I did check if there was already a duplicate but I couldn't find anything, probably since it was titled "Ax" and not "Axe". --Lemmyistrans (talk) 16:47, 25 August 2016 (EDT)
