Goombos are a sub-species of the Goombas that resided in Sarasaland during the events of Super Mario Land. Goombos slowly meander to the side, waiting to hit Mario. Their similar attack pattern is probably due to the fact that they are smaller cousins of the Goomba (according to an official Nintendo Power magazineTemplate:Refneeded). Once stomped or shot with a superball, they awarded Mario with one hundred points. After Bombshell Koopas, Goombos are the most common enemy in the game, appearing in all kingdoms with the exception of the Easton Kingdom.

Etymologically, Goombo's Japanese name is a pun comprised of the words chibi, which means "short person" or "dwarf", and Kuribō, the Japanese name for Goombas. While it's not truly understood why, nearly all enemies of the original version of Super Mario Land (the 3DS Virtual Console version retranslated some names) retain their Japanese names, unlike most of those of the main series.

Goombos are similar in size to Micro Goombas but otherwise behave like regular Goombas.
