Perry, Super Princess Peach

Perry is a supporting character in Super Princess Peach. He is a magical talking parasol who aids Princess Peach throughout the game using various abilities, such as being able to destroy blocks, and pick up and eat enemies. He is also able to take on multiple different forms which allow Peach to reach different areas and perform different moves. His name comes from the word "Parasol".

History

Early life

In Super Princess Peach, Perry's story is revealed through his dreams. Perry found himself on a mountain as a young boy, who did not know who he was, but had strange powers that allowed him to survive on the mountain. He met an old man, who took him home to protect him, and adopted him when he found out Perry had nowhere to go. They enjoyed each other's company, however, one day, when out for a walk, they were confronted by two mysterious figures. They demanded that the old man should hand Perry over, as they knew about his powers. The old man tried to protect Perry, but one of the figures used magic against them, and turned Perry into an umbrella. The pair were separated, however Perry managed to escape from the figures and attract the attention of a traveller, who took him to their shop. He remained in the shop for a while, until Toadsworth visited the shop and felt Perry's power, and then bought him. At the start of the game, when Bowser's Minions stole the Vibe Scepter and used its power to kidnap Mario, Luigi, and some of the Toads, Toadsworth gave Perry to Princess Peach to be her partner in rescuing them from Bowser's clutches. At the end of Perry's completed backstory dream after Luigi is rescued from Giant Kamek, it is revealed that Perry would like to reunite with the old man he befriended before meeting Peach and Toadsworth, but wants to stay with Peach for a while until Bowser is defeated and Mario is rescued. It is implied that at the end of the game once the two aforementioned tasks are completed, Princess Peach and Perry set off together to find the old man and reunite him with Perry, to reward the latter for aiding Peach in her own mission throughout the whole game.

In the opening of Super Princess Peach, Toadsworth gives Perry to Princess Peach to take with her to help rescue Mario, telling her that he is no ordinary umbrella. Once opened, Perry introduces himself, telling Peach that he is great at beating bad guys and that he knows everything about Vibe Island. Perry appears at various times on the DS's top screen to provide hints and instructions, such as on the file select screen. He also appears in Puzzle E: Beach with Peach.

In the game, Perry can be used to break blocks, help Peach float, pick up and throw items and enemies, defeat enemies, eat enemies to replenish a portion of the Vibe Gauge, and assume a number of other different forms. Some of these forms are obtainable freely, while others must be purchased for varying amounts of Coins at the shop. If Peach stands idle, Peach will check underneath Perry's canopy, he will trap her head and torso under his canopy, and Peach tries to wriggle herself out of Perry.

Message Blocks designed similarly to Perry also appear in the game, and when hit will prompt Perry to give the player various hints and instructions about nearby game elements and moves.

After Peach defeats Bowser at the end of the game, she uses Perry to swat him away from his villa. Afterward, Perry picks the lock to Mario's cell with his handle to free Mario, allowing him to share a joyful reunion with Peach.

Perry also stars in the promotional tie-in browser game Super Princess Peach -- Parasol Fall.

Perry makes an appearance in volume 37 of the Super Mario-kun manga. Here, he appears in the Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time arc, where Professor E. Gadd lends Baby Peach Perry to defeat the Shroobsworth and Intern Shroob attacking Toadsworth and his younger self.

Super Smash Bros. series

In the Super Smash Bros. series, there are a few collectible items of Perry. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he appears as both a trophy and a sticker, and Perry is also seen being held by Peach in a sticker showing her artwork from Super Princess Peach. Perry also appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and reduces the fall speed of fighters after jumping. He is also mentioned in one of Peach's tips.

Perry's trophy textures in Super Smash Bros. Brawl are named after Peach's textures, and Peach's parasol model contains his Japanese name, Kassā. These details suggest a possibility that Princess Peach's Peach Parasol move was originally planned to feature Perry.

Other appearances

Princess and Umbrella

In Densetsu no Stafy 4, Perry appears as a part of a costume based on Princess Peach for Stafy's sister Stapy, with the addition of a pink bow tied around his handle.

Perry is alluded to in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where one of the questions in the Heroines Quiz! asks whether Peach ever saved Mario and Toad, with Omochao later explaining that she did so with the help of a "magic parasol."

General information

Physical appearance

Perry is a yellow umbrella with a blue frill around the bottom and matching point on the top. He has a brown handle which curves at the bottom, brown eyes, a wide mouth and rosy cheeks. In his Super Mario-Kun appearance, however, the spike on top of Perry is the same color as the rest of the umbrella dome. His dreams reveal that he was not initially an umbrella, although his original form is never revealed.

Powers and abilities

In Super Princess Peach, Perry is shown to be able to break blocks, defeat enemies and pick up and throw objects. Once enemies have been picked up, he is also able to eat them to destroy them. Perry has various different forms that he can take to aid Peach in her adventure.

  • Bowlbrella - Perry acts as a boat to allow Peach to travel across water.
  • Chargebrella - This form allows Perry to charge an attack blast which can flip switches and defeat enemies.
  • Dashbrella - Peach swings Perry around as she runs to defeat enemies in her path.
  • Floatbrella - Using Perry, Peach can float for a few seconds.
  • Poundbrella - This form allows Perry to break blocks and attract nearby items.
  • Slidebrella - This allows Peach to slide down ropes with Perry.
  • Subrella - Perry transforms into a submarine so Peach can use him to travel underwater. He can also shoot bubbles when the player blows into the DS's microphone.

In his dreams, Perry is said to have some form of strange power, however what the power is isn't specifically mentioned. Despite being an umbrella and mainly inanimate, Perry is still able to move independently of Peach.

Personality

Perry generally has a lively and excitable personality, and generally seems to want to aid Princess Peach in her quest, with particular enthusiasm for defeating enemies. He is also shown to be very expressive, exhibiting a range of different facial expressions and reactions to various different situations within the game. He is also shown to be troubled and confused about his past and his dreams.
