Para Beetle Challenge (alternatively formatted as Para-Beetle Challenge with a hyphenated "Para-Beetle"[1]) is an e-Reader level for Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3. The level contains five Advance Coins. Its official difficulty rating is ★★★★★. This card was released as part of series one in Japan[2] and series two in North America[3]. The former depicts Iggy Koopa on the image, while the latter depicts three Para-Beetles and a cloud.
Level synopsis
Set high in the sky, this auto-scrolling stage contains very little solid ground. Instead, the player must jump on the backs of red Para-Beetles to progress through the level, in a similar way to World 5-6 from the main game, which creates a persistent danger of missing a jump and falling.
The player starts on a cloud platform beside a ? Block containing a Fire Flower and a wall of blocks, and the level begins scrolling slowly and to the right. Several Para-Beetles appear from the right of the screen flying to the left, which the player must jump on to collect the first Advance Coin. Beyond the wall of blocks are two smaller cloud platforms, followed by a large bottomless pit. The second Advance Coin is found above two very small cloud platforms. At this point, the level begins scrolling upwards and to the right. The player must jump on a series of vertically ascending Para-Beetles to collect the third Advance Coin.
Immediately afterwards, the screen stops scrolling vertically, and two Para-Beetles appear from the left of the screen flying to the right, which the player must ride to progress. To collect the fourth Advance Coin, the player must either make a high jump off a Para-Beetle or allow it to rise upwards. Following this is a ceiling of blocks which requires the player to lower the Para-Beetles, then a wall which requires raising the Para-Beetles, and a platform in the middle of the screen, with the fifth and final Advance coin below the platform. Afterwards, the screen's scrolling speed outpaces the Para-Beetles flying to the right, requiring the player to jump on several Para-Beetles flying quickly to the left until they reach the Warp Pipe at the end of the section. The three leftmost Brick Blocks above the Warp Pipe contain nothing and can be destroyed, while the four rightmost Brick Blocks each contain one coin. Entering the Warp Pipe leads directly to the goal with no further obstacles.
