Perry, Super Princess Peach

Perry is a supporting character who appears in the Nintendo DS game Super Princess Peach. He is a magical talking parasol who aids Princess Peach throughout the game using various abilities, such as being able to destroy blocks and pick up enemies. He is also able to take on multiple different forms which allow Peach to reach different areas and perform different moves. His name comes from the word "Parasol".

History

Background

In Super Princess Peach, Perry's story is revealed through his dreams. Perry found himself on a mountain as a young Toad boy, who did not know who he was, but had strange powers that allowed him to survive on the mountain. He met an old Toad man, who took him home to protect him, and adopted him when he found out Perry had nowhere to go. They enjoyed each other's company, however, one day, when out for a walk, they were confronted by two mysterious figures. They demanded that the old man should hand Perry over, as they knew about his powers. The old man tried to protect Perry, but one of the figures used magic against them, and turned Perry into an umbrella. The pair were separated, however Perry managed to escape from the figures and attract the attention of a traveller, who took him to their shop. He remained in the shop for a while, until Toadsworth visited the shop and felt Perry's power, and then bought him. At the start of the game, when Bowser's Koopa Troop stole the Vibe Scepter and used its power to kidnap Mario, Luigi, and some of the Toads, Toadsworth gave Perry to Princess Peach to be her partner in rescuing them from Bowser's clutches. At the end of Perry's completed backstory dream after Luigi is rescued from Giant Kamek, it is revealed that Perry would like to reunite with the old man he befriended before meeting Peach and Toadsworth, but wants to stay with Peach for a while until Bowser is defeated and Mario is rescued. It is implied that at the end of the game once the two aforementioned tasks are completed, Princess Peach and Perry set off together to find the old man and reunite him with Perry, to reward the latter for aiding Peach in her own mission throughout the whole game.

In the opening of Super Princess Peach, Toadsworth gives Perry to Princess Peach to take with her to help rescue Mario, telling her that he is no ordinary umbrella. Once opened, Perry introduces himself, telling Peach that he's great at beating bad guys and that he knows everything about Vibe Island. Perry appears at various times on the DS's top screen to provide hints and instructions, such as on the file select screen. He also appears in Puzzle E: Beach with Princess Peach.

In the game, Perry can be used to break blocks, help Princess Peach float, pick up and throw items and enemies, destroy enemies as well as assume a number of other different forms. Some of these forms are obtainable freely, while others must be purchased for varying amounts of Coins at the shop.

Perry Blocks also appear in the game, which are designed similarly to him, and when hit will prompt Perry to give the player various hints and instructions about nearby game elements and moves.

Perry also stars in the promotional tie-in browser game Super Princess Peach -- Parasol Fall.

Super Smash Bros. series

Perry makes a cameo appearance as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He also makes an appearance as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and reduces the fall speed of fighters after jumping. He is also mentioned in one of Peach's tips.

In Densetsu no Stafy 4, Perry appears as a part of a costume based on Princess Peach for Starfy's sister Starly, with the addition of a pink bow tied around his handle.

In the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, one of the questions in the Heroines Quiz! asks whether Peach ever saved Mario and Toad, with Omochao later explaining that she did so with the help of a "magic parasol", referring to Perry.

General information

Physical description

Perry is a yellow umbrella with a blue frill around the bottom and matching point on the top. He has a brown handle which curves at the bottom, brown eyes, a wide mouth and rosy cheeks. In his Super Mario-Kun appearance, however, the spike on top of Perry is the same color as the rest of the umbrella dome. His dreams reveal that he was not initially an umbrella, although his original form is never revealed.

Powers and abilities

In Super Princess Peach, Perry is shown to be able to break blocks, defeat enemies and pick up and throw objects. Once enemies have been picked up, he is also able to eat them to destroy them. Perry has various different forms that he can take to aid Peach in her adventure.

  • His trophy textures in Super Smash Bros. Brawl are named after Peach's textures, and Peach's parasol model contains his Japanese name, Kassā. These details suggest a possibility that Princess Peach's Peach Parasol move was originally planned to feature Perry.
