The Barrel Roll is Donkey Kong's signature move in the Donkey Kong Country series and Donkey Kong Land series.

First introduced in Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong can perform this move by curling into a ball and ramming into any enemy. If used on a row of enemies, the attack may scatter the entire row. Also, when close to a ledge, this move can be used to cross over gaps. The move is later used in the game's pseudo-sequel Donkey Kong Land.

In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, the move is passed on to Kiddy Kong and utilized the same as Donkey Kong's from the first game. When performing this move near an edge with water, Kiddy can hop across ponds by pressing Y Button on the water, and he can also reach heights that are inaccessible. One technique method that can be used is to have Dixie pick up Kiddy and throw him against a wall; the Kong will roll back, and if Dixie were to get on Kiddy, they can eliminate several enemies. The move is also later used in the game's pseudo-sequel Donkey Kong Land III.

In Donkey Kong 64, the move returns as one of Donkey Kong's basic moves in the game.

The barrel roll returns as Donkey Kong's signature move in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. It can be utilized by shaking the Wii Remote or the control pad while moving left or right. Here, it is not as effective as it was in previous games, because when Donkey Kong is on his own, it can potentially get him injured or defeated if he tries rolling through two or more enemies that are a little too far apart, hence why the Kong Roll is a safer alternative.
