@Baby Luigi: "Avian reptiles"? What? Do you even know what you're talking about? Hello, I'm Time Turner.

- Dinosaurs aren't even reptiles. Hello, I'm Time Turner.
- Um, yes they are definitely reptiles. You're confusing "lizards" with "reptiles" (dinosaurs are NOT lizards). Wikipedia: "Although the word dinosaur means "terrible lizard", the name is somewhat misleading, as dinosaurs are not lizards. Instead, they represent a separate group of reptiles"
It's me, Mario! (Talk / Stalk) 21:41, 5 September 2013 (EDT)- Reptilia is actually a paraphyletic group that excludes bird but includes dinosaurs - but then Dinosauria itself does include Aves, meaning birds are dinosaurs, and dinos are reptiles, but birds aren't reptiles. It's pretty screwy, and most scientists actually avoid paraphyletic groupings for that reason (and other, more sciency reasons, but I'll skip those details), preferring to stick to monophyletic groups like Sauropsida ("lizard faces", which doesn't exclude birds from the otherwise reptilian group). Here's a picture I made for a class last year that shows all the relevant groupings. (Squamata is where the lizards and snakes are, btw; Testudines is turtles, but their exact placement is still up for debate.) - Walkazo 22:27, 5 September 2013 (EDT)

The category at large currently encompasses characters based on animals not always intuitively understood to be "cats", a term interpreted by some to exclusively refer to Felis catus. It includes characters based lions, tigers, and jaguars. Personally, I like this broad application, but I suspect it makes the category a little unclear to some users, especially since we have a Category:Canines in place of a "Category:Dogs". Despite the prior proposal, I think "feline" is a fairly common word in English (or is at least as common as "canine"), and is a more serviceable name for the scope of this category. I would like to change it back.
(Additional note: In scientific zoologic nomenclature, "feline" more narrowly refers to members of Felinae, which excludes the big roaring cats like lions and tigers. "Canine" more narrowly refers to Caninae, which includes all living members of the dog family. Neither use reflect how those words are used in normal parlance. I think they would be fine for Super Mario Wiki. However, for those who adopt a similar view, a potentially alternative would be to adopt "Category:Felids" and "Category:Canids". These are the terms used in scientific nomenclature for the members of the cat family Felidae and dog family Canidae, respectively.)
I offer four options.
- Rename Category:Cats to Category:Felines
- Rename Category:Canines to Category:Dogs
- Rename Category:Cats to Category:Felids, and Category:Canines to Category:Canids
- Do nothing

Rename Category:Cats to Category:Felines
- Nintendo101 (talk) Per proposal.
- DrBaskerville (talk) Per proposal, though Category:Dogs should remain as is.
- Doc von Schmeltwick (talk) - Felis Ca
ctus does not include things like tigers. That silly 80s-90s era idea that you can simplify whole families to their most recognizable components is long dead. - Camwoodstock (talk) Per proposal. As the ones who made the original proposal to rename Dogs to Canines, this is honestly way overdue on our part; and also, uh, we'd like to note that we still cannot take the idea of renaming Canines to Dogs seriously as long as this good boy(???) exists.
Rename Category:Canines to Category:Dogs
Rename Category:Cats to Category:Felids, and Category:Canines to Category:Canids
- Nintendo101 (talk) Secondary choice.
Do nothing
- DrBaskerville (talk) Second choice

I believe you are missing a do nothing option, so I added that with my vote. Dr. Baskerville 21:38, June 10, 2024 (EDT)
- Thanks. BTW, I think you misunderstood. What was once "Category:Dogs" is currently Category:Canines. I personally do not want that to change, but referring to it as "Category:Dogs" it is just as valid as keeping this "Category:Cats" in my view, so I integrated that as an option for those who want it. - Nintendo101 (talk) 21:43, June 10, 2024 (EDT)
