There are several methods to reach the cave. One method requires the player to have the cannon open. If it is not open, talking to the Bob-omb Buddy where the cannon would be located on the Tiny Island will open it. On the Huge Island, the player needs to use the cannon to blast to a tree on the cliffside. Once up there, the player has to cross a narrow bridge, which is slightly larger in the DS version, to reach the opening into the cave.

Another method to reach the cave, whilst on the Huge Island, is by jumping high and long enough in Windswept Valley from where Koopa the Quick would stand in Rematch with Koopa the Quick to land the cliff, which contains the bridge leading to the entrance of the cave. In Super Mario 64 DS, the player can also use Luigi's Backward Somersault to reach the entrance.

A third method is by stealing the shell from the Koopa Troopa located on the beach on Huge Island, and then climb up the hill with repeated jumps until reaching the top of the cliffside. Once Mario is at the top, he must crouch to get rid of the shiny shell and then traverse the bridge leading into the cave.

All of the eight Red Coins are in the cave and are placed on the many platforms. To reach the one on the tallest pillar, the player has to either use Mario's Wall Kick or hang on to the wire net above and swing over to it. Once all the Red Coins are collected, the Power Star will appear at the Star Marker in between the two pillars.
