Admiral Bobbery (usually just referred to as Bobbery) is a Bob-omb who is Mario's sixth partner in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. He was formerly married to a female Bob-omb named Scarlette, who unfortunately died of a mysterious illness.

History

Background

Many years prior to the start of the game, Bobbery was infatuated with a Bob-omb named Scarlette. He loved her madly and proudly. Bobbery was a renowned sailor, and spent most of his time traveling around the sea. Scarlette always waited patiently for his return.

However, on an particularly icy winter, Scarlette fell ill (the case was unknown, though it quickly turned serious). She was getting extremely sick, and started to approach death. Bobbery was out to sea at this time, and by the time he returned, Scarlette was dead. Bobbery blamed himself, thinking that he could have nursed her back to health if he wasn't gone. This haunted Bobbery all the time, giving him nightmares. Not long before her death, Scarlette gave Podley an Old Letter, telling him to give it to Bobbery. Podley intended to give it to him, though when he saw Bobbery in sadness, he couldn't do it. From this time to the start of Chapter 5, the letter was kept in Podley's Place. What Bobbery did afterwords is unknown, though he eventually stayed in denial at Rogueport.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

After needing a navigator to get to Keelhaul Key, Mario meets up with Bobbery. After checking once with Professor Frankly, Mario returns to him asking him for help. He admits he is Bobbery, though still refuses.

Advised by Frankly, Mario goes to Podley's Place. After hearing about Bobbery's sad tale, Podley gives Mario the old letter and requests him to get it to Bobbery. After returning the letter, Bobbery agrees to join Mario.

A retired Bob-omb sea captain, Admiral Bobbery assists Mario in his quest with his bomb-related attacks and abilities. Outside of battle, he uses the same attack as Bombette from Paper Mario, to explode and blow up cracks. However, unlike his counterpart, he can be thrown onto high ledges to explode. Also, Bombette's main move is a body slam, and blowing up costs FP, though it's her FP standard. But Bobbery's main move is blowing up, and his FP standard is throwing time bombs.

However, when the ship sinks and the crew ends up on Keelhaul Key, Bobbery is thought to be dead. But Mario finds him near a tree, battling two Embers. Mario defeats them and Bobbery says he's about to die, asking Mario to bring him some Chuckola Cola as his last request.

When Mario brings the Chuckola Cola, his partner realizes that Bobbery was just asleep rather than dead. Mario hits him with his hammer to wake him up. Afterwards, Bobbery joins Mario in his adventure. After defeating the Shadow Queen, Bobbery joins Cortez and sails the seas with him.

Super Paper Mario

In Super Paper Mario, Bobbery appears as a Catch Card won by winning the Duel of 100 in the Sammer's Kingdom. He also makes a very brief appearance during the introduction where he, along with all the other partners from the previous Paper Mario titles are in a photo at Mario's House. Lastly, Francis has a plush toy of Bobbery at his fortress.

Tattle

  • (Rogueport) That's Admiral Bobbery. All the dock workers call him a legendary helmsman. I don't know if that's true, but he definitely seems like the most capable sailor here! I know he's been through a lot, but I'm glad we brought him around, aren't you?
  • (Keelhaul Key) That's Admiral Bobbery. He came with us on the ship, don't you remember? He washed ashore with the rest of us... but he seems hurt. You think he's doing OK?

Trivia

File:Better old bobbery.PNG
A possible early version of Bobbery.
  • The picture to the left could be an early design of Bobbery before his sailor design was made. This "Bobbery" resembles a soldier more than a sailor, and can be found within the game's sprite resources.
  • Out of all the partners, Bobbery has the highest HP total.
  • Replenishing Bob-ombs like him (Exploding, then coming back) seems to be slightly hurt after exploding, as after Bobbery attacks, he lands sitting. If the player looks fast, for a split second, his eyes are X-ed out. That means "KO'ed".
  • Bobbery speaks with a stereotypical English/British accent, using British sayings like "old bean". On a somewhat related note, Kolorado has a similar accent.
  • Bobbery is the only character who doesn't go to sleep during Luigi's stories.
  • Bobbery's key is the helm of a ship.
  • Bobbery's house is the only house in Rogueport that has a chimney.
  • If the player got Ms. Mowz to join Mario's party before Bobbery, Bobbery's sprite would be shown instead of Ms. Mowz in the party menu.
  • Bobbery may be from Fahr Outpost seeing as Fahr Outpost Mayor says "Haven't seen you in a quite some time."
  • Bobbery's sprite in the X-Naut Fortress dressing room with the sprite easter egg looks more premade than other characters do.
