The Star Pieces are a set of seven star-shaped pieces that make up the Star Road in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. The Star Pieces played a pivotal role in the game, as they were needed in order to restore the broken Star Road and restore the world to normalcy. When the Star Pieces are first seen falling from the sky at the begining of the game, they are shown to be all gold in color. However, all later appearances of the Star Pieces depicted them with unique colors, presumably to differentiate them from each other.
History
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Near the beginning of the events of Super Mario RPG, Exor penetrated the Star Road prior to landing in the center of Bowser's Keep, thus shattering it into the seven Star Pieces. The Star Pieces fell down from the sky and landed in various spots across Mushroom World. Mario's quest, in which he was aided by Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Princess Toadstool revolved around finding the seven Star Pieces in order to repair the Star Road, in order for wishes to continue coming true. At the same time, the Smithy Gang was on the hunt for them as well, hoping to prevent the power of wishes from returning, allowing them to fill the world with weapons.
Light Blue Star Piece
The first Star Piece landed somewhere near the Mushroom Kingdom. Although its discovery was never really explained, it was most likely found by either Mack or a Shyster while Mario and Mallow were pursuing Croco through Bandit's Way. Mack's group terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom while hoarding the Star Piece in the throne room, until Mario and Mallow arrived and defeated them. Mario then claimed the Star Piece, although he hadn't the slightest idea as to what purpose it served.
Green Star Piece
The second Star Piece landed somewhere in the Forest Maze. Geno was the first to learn of its whereabouts, and arrived at Rose Town to begin his search, assuming a doll belonging to Gaz is the process. Mario and Mallow chose to follow the doll into the Forest Maze, not knowing where the Star Piece could be. Eventually, they stumbled across Bowyer, just as one of his Aero flunkies presented him with the Star Piece that he found. Mario and Mallow aided Geno in defeating Bowyer, and agreed to join forces, collecting the second Star Piece in the process. However, an Aero witnessed the whole event unnoticed, and went off to tell Smithy.
Orange Star Piece
The third Star Piece crashed deep within the Moleville Mines, triggering a cave-in. The cave-in caused Dyna and Mite Mole, who were playing in the mines at the time, to become trapped. The citizens of Moleville attempted to rescue them, but failed. Eventually, Mario's group arrived in Moleville and were informed of what happened. After venturing into the mines and receiving a Bambino Bomb for defeating Croco a second time, Mario's group was able to reach the room where the Star Piece had crashed into the rafters. It was unknowingly guarded by Punchinello, who accidentally freed the Star Piece by setting off a King Bomb, which crushed him upon summoning it. As Mario's group had been covered in soot when the King Bomb detonated, the third Star Piece seemingly sensed this predicament, and restored the trio to their standard appearance upon being collected. With the third Star Piece acquired, Mario's group soon found Dyna and Mite and were able to escape from the mines.
Purple Star Piece
The fourth Star Piece landed atop Star Hill. After Mario's group traversed through Booster Tower and Marrymore, they finally rescued Princess Toadstool from a forced marriage with Booster. Once they returned Princess Toadstool to her home the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario's group was stumped, as they had no idea where the next Star Piece could be. Mallow then suggested that they should head down to Tadpole Pond and ask if Frogfucious might know. Fortunately, the wise Frog heard of the next Star Piece's whereabouts, and sent the group to Star Hill to search for it. They eventually found the fourth Star Piece after exploring Star Hill, where it had been left unguarded and was easily recovered.
Blue Star Piece
The fifth Star Piece plunged into The Sea, where it was claimed by Jonathan Jones, if not by his Bandana Reds or Bandana Blues. The eccentric citizens of Seaside Town told Mario's group of the Star Piece's whereabouts, and they set out to Jonathan Jones' Sunken Ship in order to find it. After traversing the ship, Mario's group found the Star Piece in the possession of Jonathan Jones, who made them fight him for it.
After defeating Jonathan and returning to Seaside Town, the town elder revealed his true identity of Yaridovich, and demanded for Mario to hand over the newly-claimed Star Piece, as he threatened to tickle-torture the town's elder if he refused. After giving up the Star Piece, Mario's group confronted Yaridovich before he could make his getaway, and reclaimed the fifth Star Piece upon his defeat.
Red Star Piece
The sixth Star Piece landed inside Barrel Volcano. Although it remained untouched for a lengthy period of time, the citizens of Nimbus Land witnessed the Star Piece falling into the crater. After Mario's group rescued King and Queen Nimbus, they were informed of the Star Piece's whereabouts, and dropped into Barrel Volcano to search for it. After defeating the Czar Dragon and Zombone, Mario's group found the Star Piece. Right before Mario got ahold of the Star Piece, Axem Red of the Axem Rangers swiped it. Mario's group chased the Axem Rangers out of the volcano in their attempt to get back the Star Piece. Eventually, Mario's group defeated the Axem Rangers atop Blade, and they were able to finally claim the sixth Star Piece.
Yellow Star Piece
The seventh Star Piece landed in Bowser's Keep, where it was quickly claimed by the Smithy Gang. After the second Star Piece was recovered by Mario's group, the surviving Aero who witnessed the event informed other members of the Smithy Gang of the Star Pieces and their true potential. Thus, the seventh Star Piece was seemingly branded to the chest of Smithy himself. Upon encountering Smithy, Mario's group demanded for him to hand over his Star Piece, but he refused, and asked the same of their Star Pieces. Ultimately, the two sides engaged in a fight, with Mario's side coming out the victor. With Smithy destroyed, the seventh Star Piece was free from his grasp, and Geno, now in possession of all seven Star Pieces, was able to repair the Star Road.
