Outer Space is the setting of Chapter 4 in Super Paper Mario. It should be noted that Chapter 4 may not take place in the outer space above the Mushroom Kingdom, but instead the outer space of a different dimension. At first, the heroes are unable to survive in Outer Space, as there is not any air to breathe. Instead, they need a space helmet or something like it. Merlon had previously given a fishbowl to Pook, but the fish, Captain Gills, was getting too big for it. Pook agrees to give Mario the fishbowl, but only if he finds Captain Gills a place nearby to live. After setting Captain Gills free in the canal on the basement floor of Flipside, the heroes proceed to Outer Space. Here, the heroes meet Squirps, a mysterious alien creature. He functions as their ray gun for stages 4-1 and 4-3, as well as in the battle against Brobot. They encounter many Fotons, Jelliens, and Warpids which are all hostile towards them. A large portion of this chapter involves Squarp Hole maze, which requires the player to remember which Holes are linked to which, in order to progress.
Outer Space is also the setting of Super Mario Galaxy. In the game, the term "Outer Space" is never mentioned.
