What's less viable about this (if the JP name is the same) that two completely-different species of moles with different appearances and official names? Both piranha plants are based on the same idea: "Poisonous Piranha Plants."

They have the same Japanese name that indicates that they are the same.

Their biggest difference is that while a poison is liquid, the other is gaseous, but it's very minimal.

Finally, people use Viridi's dialogue in Smash as an argument, the same one who considers Petey a species? No thanks.

Nintendo101 (talk) Though similar, these are different enemies, with different names from the people who created them, that have different means of attack, and were created by different studios over a decade apart from another. We would need Nintendo themselves to explicitly assert that Putrid Piranhas and Poison Piranha Plants are the same thing, similar to Frost Piranhas, but they have not done so in every opportunity given, including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on the Nintendo Switch, or Mario Portal, which is where Ice Piranha Plants in New Super Mario Bros. U were explicitly called "Frost Piranhas." In Ultimate, a first-party Nintendo game, they explicitly asserted to be two different subjects in the dialogue written for Viridi, whether you personally think that is valid or not. At this point, I think lumping them together would be wishcasting, rather than a reflection of what has been relayed in this media. Putrid Piranhas and Poison Piranha Plants are not the same ontological subjects.
