Mertropolis is an underwater city, protected by a dome and filled with atmospheric air, featured in the The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode "The Ugly Mermaid." Though never stated outright, it is implied to be somewhere within Water Land. In the episode, King Koopa plans to take over the city using his Doom Sub, renaming it "Kooptropolis" before his plans are foiled by the Mario Bros.
Mertropolis is inhabited by mermaids with fish heads and human legs, and is ruled by King Mackerel. His daughter, Holly Mackerel, is also featured prominently during its appearance. Since its residents are unable to breathe air, they wear water-filled fishbowls around their heads while in the city; yet, they panic when King Koopa attempts to flood it.
The town's name comes from a portmanteau of the words "merfolk" and "metropolis," a term for a big city.
