Review: Super Mario Galaxy

by Phoenix Rider

Phoenix Rider, here, folks. Back from being MIA last month. School sucks. Anydangway, let’s get this review wagon back on the road. The next speed bump for our wagon is Super Mario Galaxy for Wii! Now, some of you may wonder if the next iteration in the 3D platformer series is worth the fiddy greenbacks you’re going to shell out for it. Others of you may not be wondering at all. Others may just pick up the game cause it’s a Mario game (hey, I’m not here to judge, Hotel Mario). Now then, how exactly DOES Galaxy stack up?

Gameplay- ****+

OK, we have to face the facts. Galaxy is wonderful. The controls are so simple to pick up and start playing and they feel so natural on the Wii Remote. The Nunchuk’s Analog stick is used for movement, A is jump, B is throw Star Bits at things, and A and Z together is ground pound. C is used for the camera, but we’ll get to that in a minute. The gameplay has that Super Mario 64 feel, which is a big plus. You go around the different Galaxies collecting Power Stars to power the Comet Observatory, home of the Lumas and Princess Rosalina. Along the way, there are many different levels including a fire and ice level, a hive-themed galaxy and several desert galaxies. There are secret levels, too, but, you’ll have to figure those out for yourself.

The only problem I have with Galaxy’s gameplay is its ever-so-rigid camera. Where’s my 360-degree rotation? You would think that wouldn’t be such a hard thing Oftentimes, you can only choose between two or three camera angles, each oh so slightly different from the others. Other times, you won’t be able to change the camera at all. Lame. This makes precision jumping hard and frustrating at times. And most of the time, the camera chooses the absolute worst possible position to lock on to, such as at Mario’s side or in front of Mario, so you’re actually running toward the camera, preventing you from seeing where you’re going. And first-person view is just useless.

Sound- ***

Yeah, yeah, great music and all that. Creates a nice ambience as you’re running around doing stuff on the various Galaxies. Some of them get a little annoying though, after you’ve heard them for the 1000th time. Meh. There are some nice moments where you collect music notes and listen to throwback classic Super Mario Bros. music though. Nice touch, Nintendo.

Sound effects are present and accounted for. Whirls of tornados, flips of switches, crashes of Thwomps, everybody in the pool! Or Galaxy, as the case may be. Again, minimal voice acting. Lame. Come ON Nintendo. We want FULL voice overs! This is getting to be inexcusable, so I docked two stars off this category. It’s getting ridiculous.

Graphics- *****

Stunning. Amazing. Breath-taking. These adjectives do not apply to Galaxy. They are far too mild. Galaxy, in the graphics department is the most awe-inspiring game ever. Mario has never looked better. Love how everything glows. Nice attention to detail (the books in the library, for instance). Mario, Rosalina, Bowser, and all the enemies look great with not a single out-of place polygon in sight, save maybe for Bowser’s hair, which looks somewhat like cherry Jell-O given the physics in the game.

Replay Value- ***+

Replay Value is actually pretty decent. You’ll want to come back and try the “hard” mode with the, erm, “extra character” and experience a few differences. Of course, getting all the Stars is a must for any self-respecting Mario gamer such as yourself. Some levels you may dread due to the tedium, but there are others that are fun every time.

Overall- ****+

No doubt about it, Mario Galaxy is one of the greatest games for the Wii yet. Great gameplay, which puts a new spin on classic 64 platforming. It’s like the game was polished to a shine, and it shows. The one glaring issue, is of course the camera, which I simply could not overlook enough to give the game a 5. Still, it’s the first new 3D platformer since Sunshine, so definitely check it out. It is a must-have.

Entertainment Section

Hello, it's a-me RAP! You can also call me Ryan, as my actual first name; as most of my friends in this big wacky wiki you all love to be in :P. And some people know Hooktail as my dragon pet and friend, nice and what a girl dragon I had with. Welcome to my Entertainment Section that is worth many users having some free time playing fan made games and watching cool Mario videos!

This issue consists of Mario fan made games only, because of lack of videos I tried searching on mostly on Newgrounds; I'm currently thinking up some ways to expand my Entertainment Section for Mario Fans to enjoy having them simply entertained. So let's go onto these two games I recently played over; go with the flow!

Super Mario Galaxy Pinball

Ah, Super Mario Galaxy with stunning gameplay and platforming interactivity... it would be blessed by many Mario fans from the main series that would play such platforming madness... Wait, this is a pinball game!? Sounds like one of the first fan games to have a combination of Mario objects and pinball gameplay isn't? This would be good, and yes even with Mario!

A pinball game is like a game that came from the arcade, so technically there's no story whatsoever. You would have thought this wouldn't you? In the gameplay, there is a typical pinball table filled with interesting Mario objects that fit well into this fan game. You control the flippers and launching the pinball into gameplay just by using the mouse. With a simple hold of the mouse button, and letting it go; you just launched one; and also controlling the flippers just a click, flipping both of them.

And then there is a question above your mind, you simply asked, “Why use the mouse as the primary controller?”. Well actually when your pinball hits one of the ? Blocks during gameplay, A Star Bit pops out waiting for the cursor of your mouse to catch it; just like the Star Cursor inspired from the actual game. This game had nice interactivity concluding with the mouse interactions. In addition, the pinball can also gather Star Bits when passed by.

The playfield has a lot of objects nicely fit into a typical pinball game. For instance, when the pinball breaks the Crystal, a Star Chip is released and appears floating around the gameplay. If the player gets all five of them, a Sling Star will appear between two of the flippers meaning the main ending is blocked; pretty nifty eh? Another one is when you go to the Loop-De-Loop Galaxy Bonus; a Silver Star will appear on the Star section. If you collect five of them, a Power Star will appear.

This game is worth a shot, but there are some glitches such as the pinball stuck on an object like a ? Block. Do not fear, which rarely happens, if that really occurs; use the space bar to get rid of it. And another thing, don’t use it too much... If so, you lose a life. :P

This fan game is created by Toodles Team. Yeah, it's a team of people that works on great games as they appear in MFGG! Yep, that's that; if you know what I mean. So, if you want to play the very first Mario pinball game nicely playable in this PC, go here!

WarioWare Mou$e Workz

Oh look, up in the blue pitched sky! Is it Mario? Is it Yoshi? Is it Hooktail? Oh wait, she’s with me actually sleeping near to me while I'm wrapped up by her nice heartwarming tail. Oh look! It’s a Wario game! And it isn’t just a Wario game, it’s a WarioWare game! The WarioWare series conclude of playing simple microgames, it’s simple but addictive to all players alike.

The main thing about this WarioWare game is using the mouse. That’s the main focus on playing microgames actually, nice and sweet. There are about 12 microgames worth playing for seconds; it would be nicely addictive for us. Microgames include defending a castle from a missile, clicking on Goombas for Mario to lazily pass by and dropping a boulder. The sad part is that’s only it, 12 microgames. At least it’s actually one of the first WarioWare games created fan made; and cool too.

This game is created fanatically by... Yep, "The Wallz"... Wrong! Fool'D you! It's actually once again Toodles Team, the team from MFGG. My, my, two games created by that team; lucky you. Toodles Team, if you’re reading this; you are awesome when making innovative games. No doubt about it. Be proud that your games are reviewed in this newspaper!! So, wanna have a quick WarioWare game you’ll love? ...or a newbie to the series? Go here!

Well, this wraps up nice and well. And including being wrapped by that dragon’s tail... Awwwwwwww... ^_^ Looks like I’m going to be with her for a while. Good bright! Or Good night! :P

Upcoming Games

My Bloody Valentine

Aw, I'm just reviewing some of the same games as last time! Curse you, Nintendo!

Donkey Kong Wii

Well, I gotta say, this game is getting annoying. Donkey Kong Wii STILL has no real information, so I'm starting to believe it got cancelled. Either that, or a lot of work has to be put into it. So, don't get too excited over this game, as a release date is still yet to be revealed.

Dr. Mario & Bacterial Eradication

The game in action.

Well, I'm not sure what the "WiiWare" is, but, Puzzle games like this have always been fun to me and my brother. The stupid thing about Dr. Mario & Bacterial Eradication, is that Dr. Mario is replaced by Miis! You call this a Mario game!? Well, at least it has Wi-Fi Connection.

Either way, there are no release dates for the game, at this current moment. Hopefully, we'll see some release dates for the WiiWare games.

Mario Kart Wii

A screenshot of Princess Peach using her Mach Bike in Mario Kart Wii
One of the new vehicle types used in Mario Kart Wii.

One of the greatest Mario spin-off series ever, makes its Wii debut in the form of the tentatively named, Mario Kart Wii.

First being shown at E3, this game has been confirmed to use the Wii's functions completely, with a new Wii controller being packed with the game; the Wii Wheel. Sony tried this stunt, and I personally hated that stupid wheel, but, will Nintendo do a bit better in this area? Well, anyway, it will have much of the gameplay from previous titles, but it has a few of major changes. First of all, players don't ride in Karts anymore, but rather, they ride in cars, or other motorized vehicles of the like. Even a Motorbike can be used! Stunts can be performed during a ramp jump, which is cool, as I love showing off! Currently confirmed characters are: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Wario, Waluigi, Toad, Bowser, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Boo, Donkey Kong and Koopa Troopa, with more to come! Additionally, instead of eight, there will be twelve racers in a single race. That's really something! But, you can get more humiliated if you come last.

Well, there are no exact release dates at the moment, but America and Japan get the game early in 2008, while Australia and Europe wait for later in the year.

Super Mario Stadium Baseball

Much of the gameplay from this game is borrowed from the prequel.

Super Mario Stadium Baseball is the Wii sequel to the Nintendo GameCube game, Mario Superstar Baseball. Well, I'm fairly sure it will use the Wii Remote's capabilities. After all, Baseball would be perfect for the Wii.

Information is limited. Nintendo only revealed, like, 10 screenshots. Nice going, Nintendo! Well, at least we get to see new stadiums; Mario Stadium, Yoshi Park and Wario Field. They all look pretty funny, and seem really well done, graphically. Characters include: Mario, Wario, Luigi, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Yoshi, Peach, Daisy, Donkey Kong, Koopa Troopa, Paratroopa, Magikoopa Shy Guy, Dry Bones, Noki, Pianta, Hammer Bro., Goomba and Waluigi. That's a big list. I wonder who else could become playable, as all the characters we've seen so far are from the last game.

Well, I'm afraid there isn't much to talk about on this game, at the moment. No release dates yet, sadly, but keep hanging on!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl box art
The game's boxart.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is, what could be, the biggest Wii game since Super Mario Galaxy! I have a lot to talk about on this game, so, get ready.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic, the most anticipated third party character for Brawl, has recieved much of both positive and negative reactions.

*ahem*, Brawl is a fusion of Fighting and Action. The game brings in several Nintendo characters from other series, and pits them against each other in a choice of several stages. However, for the first time in the Super Smash Bros. series, characters from Nintendo's third party affiliates have joined the Brawl. Each character has a set of normal attack moves, as well as four special attack moves, which usually cause some added effect. There are also Final Smash moves, which can be used when a Smash Ball has been smashed open! Let the power flow through you, as the Final Smash provides you with the ability to use an incredibly strong attack! Mastering these moves and good strategy are the keys to winning. There are four different control types; Wii Remote held horizontally, Wii Remote and Nunchuk together, Wii Classic Controller, and the Nintendo GameCube Controller. Go to the Gameplay section for more details. The list of characters are, Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox, Samus, Zelda, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Peach, Ice Climbers, Pit, Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Ike, Pokémon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Snake, Lucas, Sonic and King Dedede. That's a lot of characters, and there are more to come! Go here for the Stages and here for the Items. Assist Trophies are new to Brawl, acting as characters that assist the player who released them. This allows players from more obscure Nintendo series to appear in the game. There are also new Pokémon have been confirmed to emerge from the Poké Ball, marking the debut of 3rd and 4th Generation Pokémon.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The Subspace Emissary's logo.
As was the case with the last game, a Beta Character Select screen was used during the Demo versions of the game.

The Subspace Emissary is a new game mode in the game, acting as the main Action part of the game. With an actual story plot to it, the Subspace Emissary features several of Brawl's playable characters' quest to defeat the Subspace Army, an evil race of dark beings who want to draw the entire world into Subspace. Go here for more information on the game mode, or go here for the rest of the confirmed story of the Subspace Emissary. Classic Mode also returns from Super Smash Bros. Melee, acting the exact same as before. Event Matches return in this game as well, but they are completely new. Additionally, the Event Matches now have a difficulty choice, so if you feel bored of an easy Event Match, switch it to hard, and test your skills! Wi-Fi Connection has also been implemented in the game, allowing players to connect and battle from across the globe! However, its range of capabilities are larger when you are playing with registered friends. Trophies, Stickers and CD's enhance the fun of collectible items, as they get players eager to collect them all. And because there are three kinds of collectible items, the game will go on forever!

Well, I don't wanna go on TOO long, so I'll end here. January 24th is the Japanese release date, with the Americans release coming on February 10th. Australia and Europe have no release dates yet, sadly. Well, the games release in Japan and America are just around the corner! Get ready, guys!

Trivia

by f_wikiimagem_a663437.pngBean
Hey, this is Beanbean (talk), giving you the ‘Shroom Issue X’s trivia about the Marioverse! Ready? Let’s start!

  1. The Sammer Guy called “The Negative One”’s name is a reference to the Word -1 glitch from Super Mario Bros.
  2. “Noki” translates into “shell” in English, which is what the Nokis wear.
  3. When the Sledge Bros. say “Tag, you’re it” in the ‘’The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 ‘’ episode Tag Team Trouble, their, mouths don’t move while saying it.
  4. The enemy from ‘’Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island’’ called Piro Dangle looks very similar to another enemy from the Mario series called a Spark from Super Mario Bros. 2.
  5. In the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode “Reign Storm”, Kooky can be seen at Bowser’s crowning, but he is still supposed to be in Hawaii.
  6. Stop & Go Station, the ninth level of Donkey Kong Country, is the first level the Klaptrap enemies appear in.
  7. Squeaks are the first enemies to appear in ‘’Wario's Woods’’.
  8. ‘’Super Mario Strikers’’ is the first game that Donkey Kong has worn something other than a tie since ‘’Donkey Kong Jr.’’.
  9. After Microsoft bought Rare, Timber’s hat had the Nintendo logo on it. But in the artwork in the Diddy Kong Racing DS manual, the emblem was changed to the Nintendo DS logo.
  10. The Doot-Doot Sisters make a minor cameo each time a cup is won in ‘’Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.
  11. One scene where everyone on the Doomship is dancing in “Do the Koopa” includes many mistakes: Big Mouth dancing but his feet never touch the ground, Hop’s hair appears yellow, Kooky’s whole face is orange, Hip’s hair is blue, and Hop is dancing next to Cheatsy in two of the shots while in the one following he is seen dancing next to his twin brother.
  12. Rockrocs are the only type of Kremlings from ‘’Donkey Kong Country’’ that have never appeared in the Donkey Kong Country Animated Series in any shape or form.

Ok, and that’s all, folks! Thanks for reading! ^-^

Director's Notes

Y'know, The 'Shroom looks a lot nicer when it's smaller, I think. Of course, it's smallness is due to lack of certain sections, yada yada, uncommitted writers as usual.... Fake News people, you better actually do your mini-section, from what I hear most of you don't ever do it. If this continues, we may have to go back to the one-man style, and I don't want to force that on you guys. Moving on... 3D quit FTMV, though I doubt anyone will want to take the job. We also have a few fresh scrubs this month to help us old weeds, I hope you like their approach to their section. I hope you are enjoying return of the Review section, reviewing none other than Super Mario Galaxy. For you writers out there, the next issue will be due Janurary 5th. As always, make any suggestions, comments, and complaints at the comments page.

Happy Holidays,
