Alternately colored doppelgangers of existing characters are used throughout the Super Mario franchise for the purposes of multiplayer. These are not distinct characters, but simply copies created exclusively for gameplay reasons. evie please add detail

Mario Bros.
Mario Bros. features the debut of Luigi as Mario's palette swap. Throughout his subsequent appearances across the Super Mario franchise, he would slowly start differentiating himself as his own character. should this be here? he was never just a recolor, he always had his own name
