“Hang on, hang on! You can't just sit around and space out! You're in the way! Huh? You were running? You're slower than molasses! You see, I am the spirit who loves all things swift! I can't stand people who loaf around like slackers!”

The Spirit of Speed, also known as the Spirit of Swiftness, is one of the Yoshi Island Spirits seen within the Forbidden Pop-Up Book in the game Yoshi Topsy-Turvy. She is a very fast and energetic spirit, and she reflects on that when she meets the game's protagonist Yoshi. The Spirit of Speed can't stand the sight of Yoshi just standing around, and she shows him how quick she can fly as she zooms around the screen. She is found on the fourth page of the Forbidden Pop-Up book, and she is quite eager to let Yoshi pass to the next page. But first, she wants him to stop loafing around. The spirit challenges him to run as fast as he can to the goal of that level. If he reaches the goal within a set amount of time, she will award Yoshi with a Happiness Medal. If Yoshi collects a minimum of six happiness medals within ten different levels, the spirit will allow him to progress to the next page. The Spirit of Speed also appears in other pages of the Pop-Up Book, where she and another spirit assign the speed task to Yoshi in order to increase the difficulty of a stage.

Appearance

Her design is based in a streak of lightning, which is often associated with speed. She wears a red and yellow dress.
