The pirate leader starts the fight with four Bandana Blues for protection. After his bodyguards are defeated, Johnny challenges Mario to a one-on-one duel. Alternatively, if Mario leaves at least one Bandana Blue alive, Mario will not have to enter the duel. Additionally, after his HP have dropped below half, Jonathan uses Get Tough! causing Jonathan's skin to turn red and he uses more powerful attacks for the rest of the battle. Mario is eventually able to defeat Jonathan, who then respectfully gives Mario the Star Piece.

When Mario returns to Seaside Town, it is revealed that the Elder, innkeeper, and shopkeeper  are in fact Smithy's lieutenant Yaridovich in disguise. Mario is forced to hand over the Star Piece, and Yaridovich runs to the coast to be picked up by the Axem Rangers. However, the Rangers were running late, so Yaridovich decides to swim away (even knowing he would rust). Before he can reach the water, Jonathan Jones and his pirate crew block his exit, forcing him into a confrontation with Mario. Yaridovich is soon defeated by Mario. However, Jonathan Jones could not actually witness the battle as his gills could not let him stay out of the water for any longer, though he did leave behind a note explaining that he was sure Mario took down Yaridovich in a breeze, and also relayed to him that his ship mates uncovered a flying Ax in the sky, which he suspected was part of the Smithy Gang.
When Yaridovich tries to escape with the Star Piece, Jonathan appears with some of his crew to block his exit as he attempts to jump into the water, forcing him to battle Mario and his party. After Yaridovich is defeated, a note left by Johnny can be seen on a tree, explaining that he was unable to watch because his gills would not allow him to stay outside the water any longer, but that he is sure that Mario was able to easily defeat Yaridovich. The note also states that his crew saw a flying ax in the sky, which he is certain is related to the Smithy Gang.

Jonathan Jones was last seen during <i>Super Mario RPG</i>'s ending sequence, standing on the cliff where the Yaridovich battle took place and gazing out onto the sunset. He and his Bandana Reds also operated a float based on the Sunken Ship (moved by King Calamari's tentacles) during the ending parade, and this float was notable for being the first to be affected by nightfall and the glitter released by a Star.

Jonathan Jones, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Jonathan Jones (known to his friends as Johnny) is an anthropomorphic shark and the leader of a band of pirate sharks in the game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. His base of operations is the Sunken Ship near Seaside Town; he is known as the "most notorious pirate ever to roam" the Seaside region.[1] Johnny's weapon of choice is a trident, which he uses to skewer his opponents. Although Johnny is a pirate, he has a strict code of honor and will be loyal to anyone who can defeat him in battle.

History

During the events of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, one of the seven Star Pieces is said to have crashed into the ocean, where it was later recovered by Jonathan Jones and his pirates. When Mario arrives to claim the Star Piece for the Elder of Seaside Town, Johnny states that he will only hand over the relic if Mario and his allies can defeat him in battle. The pirate leader starts the fight with four Bandana Blues assisting him. If the party defeats all of the Bandana Blues, Jonathan challenges Mario to a one-on-one duel. Additionally, after his HP drops below half, Jonathan uses Get Tough!, causing his skin to turn red and increasing his attack and defense for the rest of the battle. When Jonathan is defeated, he befriends Mario and hands him the Star Piece.

During the ending sequence, Johnathan Jones appears on the cliff where the Yaridovich battle takes place, gazing out onto the sunset. He and Bandana Reds are also seen on a float based on the Sunken Ship (moved by King Calamari's tentacles) during the ending parade.
