- “For those I protect...I can not lose!”
- —Roy, Super Smash Bros. Melee
Roy is a 15-year old swordsman, and a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He is a character from the Fire Emblem series, a series known primarily in Japan. Marth, another Fire Emblem character, is also in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It is unknown if he will make a return in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Super Smash Bros. Melee
He, along with Marth, visited the Mushroom Kingdom in the aforementioned game, Super Smash Bros. Melee. He was an unlockable character, unlocked by beating Classic or Adventure Mode as Marth and then beating Roy. Roy is a clone of Marth, and has all of his attacks. However, he is both slower and heavier than Marth, but packs more power, and expels fire from most of his attacks. He is also the fastest of the heavy-weight characters. Overall, he is a very powerful character, but is not necessarily hard or easy to use.

Trophy Information from Super Smash Bros. Melee
Classic
The son of the lord of Pharae Principality, Roy was studying in Ostia when the Kingdom of Bern invaded League of Lycia. His father fell ill at this time, so Roy assumed leadership of Pharae's armies. After his fateful meeting with the Princess Guinevere, his destiny became inextricably linked with the fate of the entire continent.
Adventure
While Roy's moves are well balanced, he's a little on the slow side, and doesn't excel at midair combat. His blade, the Sword of Seals, gives him excellent reach, and makes his Double-Edge Dance slightly different then Marth's Dancing Blade. When it's fully charged, Roy's destructive Flare Blade delivers an instant KO.
All-Star
Roy's blade is different than Marth's: he does the most damage hitting with the center of his sword. So, a fearless advance into the arms of his foe is Roy's best bet. Blazer is a bit slower than Marth's Dolphin Slash, but it's still a mighty attack that sets anyone it strikes aflame. Roy's attack after using Counter differs slightly from Marth's.
Trivia
- Interestingly, Super Smash Bros. Melee was Roy's first appearance in any Nintendo game. He would later star in the Japan-only game Fire Emblem: Fūin no Tsurugi. So, his appearance in Melee was done to advertise his later appearance in the said game. Additionally, Roy and Marth only speak Japanese in all versions of the game, and Roy was voiced by Jun Fukuyama.
- Roy and Marth were not supposed to reach the American version of Super Smash Bros. Melee. They were put in because Fire Emblem scored high in the Japanese polls. But, because Fire Emblem was Japan-only, they were going to put them in the Japan version only. However, Nintendo of America payed a lot of attention to Marth and Roy, so they were kept in. This action led many American gamers to become interested in Fire Emblem, and they started studying about it. This action led Fire Emblem into the Western World.
