In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, when Mario reaches the end of a level, the Comet Piece will turn yellow, regardless of which color it was when Mario got it.

Concept artwork from New Super Mario Bros. Wii (pictured) shows that a power-up that resembles a chicken suit was originally intended to be in the game, but was eventually changed into the Penguin Suit.
In Donkey Kong Country Returns and its remake, Mr. Game & Watch can be seen background of Foggy Fumes.
Mario was meant to appear in the Disney movie Wreck it Ralph, but the idea was dismissed since the writers couldn't think of a suitable way to incorporate him into the movie; he is mentioned once, however.
