The title was announced during the Feburary 14, 2013, Nintendo Direct by Satoru Iwata[1]. It features Luigi as player one, with Yellow Toad, Blue Toad and ,notably, Nabbit being playable in multi-player mode.[1] Features like Challenge Mode and Boost Rush are not available.
The title will be released for the Wii U eShop, and can be purchased by accessing it via an Internet connection, and having a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U. Once downloaded, the player must press a certain button on the file select screen to play. It will also be available for purchase at retail. This version will not require New Super Mario Bros. U in order to be playable.
Gameplay
The gameplay is largely similar to its base game, except that Luigi retains his higher jump and traction from Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. The game itself is also made harder, and every course starts at one-hundred seconds. Elements like Star Coins and bosses are retained.

The world map itself is unchanged from New Super Mario Bros. U, though it is unconfirmed if the level names, Enemy Courses or Toad Houses are changed.
Levels
Satoru Iwata confirmed that there are 80+ new courses replacing the original courses from New Super Mario Bros. U. The following have been displayed:
- An Acorn Plains course with Spine Coasters.
- An Acorn Plains course with rising ledges.
- A Layer-Cake Desert course with moving blocks.
- A Sparkling Waters course with Huckit Crabs and wooden huts.
- A Frosted Glacier course with spinning stars and Broozers.
- A Soda Jungle course with Sumo Bros. and tilting platforms.
- A Rock-Candy Mines course with wooden platforms and ledges.
- A sky course (presumably a Meringue Clouds course) with rainbow walls and Bullet Bills.
- A Meringue Clouds-esque level with Munchers and Chain Chomps.
