Airships are one of the many propeller driven transports used by Bowser and his Koopalings in Super Mario Bros. 3. They're the last levels of worlds 1-7 and they each have their own design and obstacles. Most of them are covered with cannons, thrusters, and Bullet Bills. They may be the precursors to the Koopa Clown Car.
In Super Mario World one of the airships crashed near the entrance to the Valley of Bowser. It is now the Sunken Ghost Ship.
Also, in the The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon, Airships were called Doomships.
An Airship appears in Mario Kart DS as one of the racing tracks, Airship Fortress.
Again, in Mario Hoops 3-on-3; Ninja, Black Mage, and White Mage ride an Airship which is also the last court in the game, Rainbow Ship.
