Bunbuns are bee-like enemies that reside in the Birabuto Kingdom of Super Mario Land. They soar overhead, then drop their spears on Mario. Jumping or shooting a superball at them would clip their wings, sending them crashing to the ground and awarding Mario 800 points. Some Bunbuns fly at very high altitudes out of reach, making their defeat virtually impossible. They only appear in World 1-2.

It is interesting to note that when Mario stomped a Bunbun, it would instantaneously turn into a skeleton; this means that, unlike many enemies, it is very obvious the Bunbun have died. This is not typical of most Mario games and is therefore a unique trait.
