The Axe is an item in Super Mario Bros. that was in the final battle againts Bowser. Mario or Luigi had to jump on the axe to break the bridge where Bowser was on so he would fall in the lava.
In New Super Mario Bros. it was replaced by a Skull Switch.
In Bowser's court in Mario Hoops 3-on-3 the basketball pole was a giant Axe.
