Pauline in Donkey Kong Strikes Again!: Coloring & Activity Book

The Donkey Kong coloring and activity books are a series of books published by Modern Promotions/Publishers that feature characters from Donkey Kong, including Mario, Pauline, and Donkey Kong. The first five books in the series are titled Donkey Kong, and were published in 1982, while the next five books are titled Donkey Kong Strikes Again!, and were published in 1983. Four of the books under each title contain coloring pages that follow a story, as well as puzzles and other activities, while one of the books under each title contains only activities. In 1983, two additional books titled Donkey Kong Junior were published, based on the game of the same name; one of these books contains a variety of activities, and the other contains only puzzles and mazes. Three small puzzle booklets were also released, which appeared in boxes of Donkey Kong Junior cereal. With the exception of these booklets, every book in the series uses the same UPC-A barcode (0-30099-99730-1), and none of the books are numbered in any way, making the chronology of the books very difficult to determine.

At Video Land Amusement Park, Donkey Kong is the new attraction, who is not very good at making friends and mostly daydreams of Pauline, who works at the amusement park and acts during "The Big Show", where everyone gathers to hear her sing. After her show ends, she feeds the animals in the park peanuts and crackers, and, as a result, they love her very much. Mario also works at the park as a carpenter, repairing all of the attractions in the park. He also likes Pauline but is unable to express it. As he nails a plank onto a haunted house attraction, he watches her from his ladder. Once it is noon, he takes break from repairing a plane ride and watches Pauline as she offers Donkey Kong a peanut, eating his lunch. Suddenly, Donkey Kong grabs her and she screams for help. Mario, having heard her scream, climbs down his ladder and hits Donkey Kong in the head with a hammer, making him briefly lose his grip on Pauline. However, Donkey Kong bends the bars of his cage and escapes with Pauline, with Mario dazed on the ground.

Continuing from the events of the previous book, Donkey Kong runs off with Pauline, with Mario in pursuit. Mario then loses track Donkey Kong and Pauline, barely able to hear the latter's screams, and frantically searches the amusement park, including the bumper cars, the hall of mirrors, the shooting gallery, and the funhouse, but to no avail. Mario then realizes that there is only one place that Donkey Kong could be: the haunted house, the attraction he had been working on in the previous book. Mario is afraid to enter the haunted house, but Pauline's scream confirms that it is Donkey Kong's hiding place, and Mario musters his courage and barges inside. The inside of the haunted house is dark, and Mario calls for Pauline. As he slowly turns past a corner, a skeleton pops out from a nearby panel. Mario, frigthened, jumps back, but lands into a vampire's lap. Mario is not deterred, and runs towards Pauline. However, he fails to notice a trapdoor underneath him, which opens and drops him into a cemetery. Ghosts and ghouls rise from the graves, but Mario continues running to Pauline. Pauline's screams become louder as he runs to her, and Mario guesses that she is behind a set of doors. He pushes up the doors, which lead into a mad scientist's laboratory. Mario finds Pauline tied to an operating table, but Donkey Kong swings across a hanging light and kicks Mario into a doctor mannequin. He then jumps on his back, but Mario swings his hammer on his foot, causing him to stagger and fall out a window. Mario and Pauline run out of the haunted house, with the book ending with Pauline hugging Mario and giving him a kiss.

Mario and Pauline leave the haunted house to find the park deserted as Donkey Kong is on the loose. Donkey Kong traps Mario in a telephone booth as Pauline yells for the police. Donkey Kong then runs off with Mario still trapped in the telephone booth so he will never rescue Pauline again. Donkey Kong makes his way through the amusement park with Mario until they reach the roller coaster, which Donkey Kong rides until they reach the top of the ramp. Donkey Kong then jumps all the way to the ferris wheel. Donkey Kong grabs Mario and he dangles him above shark infested waters. Mario calls Pauline to get his hammer, so Pauline runs back into the Haunted House to get the magic hammer after getting through the cobwebs while Donkey Kong tickles Mario. After Pauline climbs the Ferris wheel, she hits Donkey Kong in the head and he falls into the water.

Following the events of the previous book, Mario and Pauline decide to celebrate their victory by running towards the Tunnel of Love. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong emerges from the water he was thrown in and charges into the Tunnel of Love after Mario and Pauline who hear him approaching. They then quietly leave the boat and swim through the channel and under Donkey Kong's boat. Donkey Kong realizes their plan and blocks the entrance they were swimming towards, so Mario and Pauline run on the ledge of the ride and disguise themselves as cupids in one scene of the ride. Pauline shoots an arrow on Donkey Kong and Mario and Pauline rush through the emergency exit. They then run into The Shrink Machine; an attraction Mario has been building. While chasing them down, Donkey Kong runs into the shrink machine which turns it on and shrinks him, Mario and Pauline. Donkey Kong grabs Pauline and carries her up a tower of beams which resembles 100m. The book ends with a young boy putting a coin into a Donkey Kong arcade cabinet.

Mario gets ready for his first day at a new construction site, brushing his teeth and getting dressed. He takes a bus to the site's location, which is a seven-story building. Fixing his cap for his first day at the sire, Mario suddenly realizes that no one is there because it is a Saturday, so he sits down and enjoys coffee and doughnut until Donkey Kong throws a barrel at him. He then escapes on some girders, prompting Mario to find Pauline, as she is the only one who can talk to him. He finds Pauline at Pauline's, her club, where Pauline, who is now very successful, is having her rehearsal. Pauline is surprised to see Mario during the rehearsal, and he tells her that Donkey Kong is at the construction throwing barrels from the top of the building, and that she is the only one who can talk to him. Pauline takes Mario into her limousine and her driver then drives off to the construction site. Mario is still in love with her, but also is still unable to express his feelings to her. The limousine arrives at the construction, where Donkey is admiring the view from the top of the building. He sees Mario and Pauline at the construction, and thinks that Pauline has come to visit him. He, however, does not like Mario, making Pauline worried. He then throws down a second barrel which hits a wheelbarrow containing tools, planks, and a brick. Mario rushes Pauline into an elevator as another barrel lands next to them, and Pauline presses the "UP" button, taking her and Mario to the top floor of the building.
