Donkey Kong is a VFD game based on the arcade original. It was developed and released by Coleco in 1982 as part of its tabletop arcade games series.[2]
Controls
Like the arcade game, the player moves Mario using a control stick and a jump button.
Gameplay
There are eight difficulty levels, each containing the Ramps screen and Rivets screen,[2] which must be completed before the Time Limit. The player starts off with three lives.
In the Ramps screen, Mario must reach the top of the screen to his girlfriend using ladders while dodging the barrels thrown at him by Donkey Kong. There is a hammer on the third floor, but it only awards points. Donkey Kong is standing on an electric fence. Mario can run under it but not jump through it.
In the Rivets screen, Mario has to remove ten rivets while avoiding fireballs. He simply needs to walk over a rivet to remove it, but this leaves a gap which he has to jump over if he needs to reverse direction. He can collect his girlfriend's hat, purse, or umbrella for extra points. After the last rivet has been removed, the game starts over again at a higher difficulty. The game repeats itself at max difficulty until all lives are lost. The game saves the highest score.

Trivia
- Coleco had planned to release a VFD adaptation for Donkey Kong Jr., but they scrapped it in favor of distributing Nintendo's Game & Watch Tabletop version.
