From the Mushroom Vaults: From Shines to Super Shrooms

by 3dhammer.gif 3D, Mr. 3D to you 3dhammer.gif

Welcome, yet again to yet ANOTHER issue of FTMV. DON'T YOU EVER GET TIRED OF THESE THINGS?!

Today, we'll take a look at the last Secret Shines in SUper Mario Sunshine, as well as a comprehensive shopping guide for Paper Mario 2.

Revenge of the Revenge of the Revenge of the Secret Shines!

There are two unlisted Secret Shines in every level. Let's seek them out, shall we?

Bianco Hills

Shine 1: This Shine is located at the Hillside Secret cave obstacle course. Once you've finished the episode one, get over to the cave again. FLUDD won't be lost! Once inside, pound the switch for a Red-Coin hunt. Collect for Shine. How easy is that?

Shine 2: After completing "The Secret of Dirt Lake", enter it again. Instead of just trying to make to the end this time, there is a red switch in front of the starting yadda yadda see above for further direction already.

Ricco Harbor

Shine 1: Once The Secret of Ricco Tower is complete, re-start the episode. Get over to the obstacle course, blah blah blah, hit the new switch, blah blah collect all coins already.

Secret Shine 2: Pick the Blooper episode and begin the level. Head over to the cave to thenorth where you did a time-trial. This time you'll have to finish the race within 40 seconds. This'll be pretty tough. I would recommend picking the green blooper, as its best for turning and all around speed. Hold the analog stick forward at all times. Jump over any obstacles you encounter, and try not to make a whole lot of turns as that slows you down. When you reach the final stretches of the race, where all you must do is make sharp turns, go OVER the cement sidewalk instead of going around it. You'll lose some speed, but you'll gain quite a bit of time in doing this.

Gelato Beach

Secret Shine 1: Complete the Dune Bug Secret Course and re-start it. Scoot your butt over to the cave, then hop in and hit the new switch. Collect the coins. HOW EASY IS THAT?!

Secret Shine 2: On any of the episodes, go to the far north cliff face and turn left, over to the Dune Bug that makes steps when you spray it. Once the steps pop out, hop down them and spray the blank wall in front of you until a Shine pops out.

Pinna Park

Secret Shine 1: This Secret Shine is located on the Beach Cannon's Secret obstacle course. Go there with the appropriate episode. You won't lose your FLUDD. This time though, instead of just making it to the end you'll find a red switch in front of your starting point. Pound it and it'll be a red coin hunt. Gather them all within the time limit to get the shine.

Secret Shine: This Secret Shine is located on the Yoshi-go-round Secret obstacle course. Go there with the appropriate episode. You won't lose your FLUDD. This time though, instead of just making it to the end you'll find a red switch in front of your starting point. Pound it and it'll be a red coin hunt. Gather them all within the time limit to get the shine.

Noki Bay

Secret Shine:' This Secret Shine is located on the Shell's Secret obstacle course. Go there with the appropriate episode. You won't lose your FLUDD. This time though, instead of just making it to the end you'll find a red switch in front of your starting point. Pound it and it'll be a red coin hunt. Gather them all within the time limit to get the shine.

(1) is in the air a ways past the red switch. Wall-jump up to the extruding platform. Somersault and you'll find (2) in the air right there. Continue over to the pole, climb it. Run up the slippery incline and about halfway up leap over the edge facing the pole. There is where you'll find (3). Head all the way up the incline then turn 180 degrees. You'll see (4) sitting up on a narrow ledge. Go grab it, continue up the following platform to find (5) hovering in the air. (6) will be located on the second platform hovering in the air. (7) is on the top platform, floating. (8) is on the first landing following the spinning block.

Secret Shine: Any old episode will do for this secret Shine, but I prefer an episode where the lake is clean. Head to the north of the starting point to a wall with the stone marking on it that, when squirted, would create a stone maze. Do not enter that, rather, turn left and approach the pools of water. Pass them and go over to the split in the wall and wall-jump up into the dark cave. Follow it out to the end, somersault up into the larger black hole (no pun intended). The hole will throw you up onto the top of a cliff. There you will find a yellow bird flying around; squirt it.

Sirena Beach

Secret Shine: This Secret Shine is located on the Hotel Lobby's secret obstacle course. Go there with the appropriate episode. You won't lose your FLUDD. This time though, instead of just making it to the end you'll find a red switch above the bricks you must head-butt to destroy. Pound it and it'll be a red coin hunt. Gather them all within the time limit to get the shine.

This is one of the few area's I feel you guys should need help in finding the red coins. (1) is on the sand block in front of you. (2) is on the next set of sand blocks, and (3) is hovering above the third set. For (4) you are going to have to literally drop down from the third set of sand blocks, where you should be now, and make mario hang onto the ledge below. There you will find (5). Squirt the ice until it melts then head-butt the bricks to the top. You'll find (6) in the air on the bricks at the end of the stretch, and (7) and (8) can be found in the pyramid positioned sand blocks ahead of you. The Shine appears next to the blue, empty shine on the last platform.

Secret Shine: This Secret Shine is located on the Casino Secret obstacle course. Go there with the appropriate episode. You won't lose your FLUDD. This time though, instead of just making it to the end you'll find a red switch in front of your starting point. Pound it and it'll be a red coin hunt. Gather them all within the time limit to get the shine.

Pianta Village

Secret Shine: This Secret Shine is located on the Village Underside Secret obstacle course. Go there with the appropriate episode. You won't lose your FLUDD. This time though, instead of just making it to the end you'll find a red switch in front of your starting point. Pound it and it'll be a red coin hunt. Gather them all within the time limit to get the shine.

This is the one of the rare times I'll describe how to get these coins. So, here goes. (1) is located in the air above the first chuckster. Bop up on his head for a while to get it. (2) is located on the next platform above the air. (3) and (4) are located on the following platform with all of the goomba's. From there, turn around to find a tightrope. Jump on that and you'll find (5) floating high in the air above it. (6) will be on the platform the tightrope leads to. The Pianta on fire DOES NOT carry a red coin, so don't waste time on him.

Return to the platform with the goomba's and have the chuckster throw you to the next platform. You'll find (7) and (8) hovering next to each other. The Shine will appear on that platform.

Secret Shine:' Go to the top of the tallest tree in the level, meaning on top of the stand with its legs balancing on the leaves. Look down at the marking of a shine. Notice also that a Shine resembles the sun...and notice that the sun happens to look quite close from this height. Figure it out? I knew you wouldn't! Squirt the sun until a shine appears.

Review: Paper Mario

by Phoenix Rider

Phoenix Rider reporting for the ‘Shroom once again. In light of a recent addition to the Wii Virtual Console, I’m reviewing the original Paper Mario slated for the N64. Let’s have look-see at what we got to work with right here.

Gameplay- *****

Amazing. All right, so it doesn’t have the “intuitiveness” of later titles in the Paper Mario series, but it doesn’t need them. This one’s a classic RPG. Peach has been kidnapped (surprise, surprise) and it falls on Mario’s shoulders to save her. Along the way, Mario will visit exotic locales such as the blistering Dry Dry Desert and the lush Jade Jungle. He’ll enlist the help of eight partners along the way, and they’ll help in battle, as well as on the field.

Speaking of battling, it’s not to different than what you’re used to if you’ve played TTYD (playing the sequel before the prequel? Tsk, shame on you. =P ) Action Commands, battle strategies, all the rest are relatively unchanged. The timing of the Action Commands are different from TTYD, so take that to heart when playing this one. Of course, there’s no Superguarding, but that adds to the challenge, thus, more fun. Controls are self-explanitory, with the only difference from the sequel being the use of C-down (or x on the Classic Controller) using your partner’s ability, but those buttons are the same location on both controllers, so you’re good to go, there.

The story never gets tiresome, though there are a few of your garden-variety fetch-quests. Just a caveat. Still, nothing short of spectacular in this category.

Sound- **+

Truth be told, I wanted to give this a higher score. The music in the game is amazing for a MIDI, Toad Town and Forever Forest in particular are well organized. No voice acting, of course; this was/is an N64 game. Even Mario remains silent this time around. Some sound effects sound pretty grating at times, but it’s nothing unforgivable. All the cartoony creaks, boings, and doinks get a little too much to bear after a while though.

Graphics- ***

Again, I’m being fair and grading this based on the graphics of the N64 era. It doesn’t have the kiddy feel to it like some places in the sequel, but it’s not spectacular either. Graphics are still on the blurry side. The game doesn’t utilize the “paper” aspect like the sequels, but this was before all the innovation!

Replay Value- ***+

RPGs are notorious for failing in the replay value department. Not so much with Paper Mario. Take note that you cannot play your file after you’ve beaten the final boss. Too bad, so sad, start over, deal with it. The game offers enough entertainment to still be fun subsequent times through. I’m not saying it’s a spectacular game to play through again, but it’s still fun nonetheless. As a side note, be sure to watch the end credits, as they are hysterical and entertaining in the short while they last.

Overall-****

What we have here is a great game, It can be seen as plain as day. Why it might even make the cover Of Nintendo Exposé.

No, seriously, this is the game than spawned the Paper Mario sub-series. It can be nothing if not amazing. Minor things keeping the game from getting a five are the noises, the graphic feel, and the aforementioned fetch-quests. So save up those Wii Points and purchase it, OR if you can find a copy of the original to play on your N64, that would be great too. This reviewer prefers the latter method, but I suppose I’ll have to just accept the fact that the next generation prefers the next generation, if you know what I mean.

Mario, Santa Mario

Mario handing out presents.

Recently Mario has brought HUGE presents for his good buddies Kirby & Pikachu. This however brought up many, many rumors. How did Mario buy the $70,000,000,000 Coins worth of presents? We did know that Price Peasly made a huge bet with Mario over the Beanstar (that Mario won) but even that would only cover a small fraction of the cost.

Hotel Delfino
Mario during his first visit to the Casino.

However it is known that Mario made a trip to the Hotel Delfino Casino, twice to be infact. Mario is also seen leaving and entering the Hotel many times. Another spotting of Mario at a Casino is Grate Guy's Casino a secret Casino where Mario might be playing poker. These rumors have brought up this statement by Mario.

“It's-a me, Mario!” – Mario

After that statement Mario left, leaving our investigation on hold, we will update you on our situation frequently.

Upcoming Games

My Bloody Valentine

Mario Kart Wii

Mario Kart Wii, well, probably a very obvious name for this Mario Kart game. The name is still tentative, however, so I am hoping for a more creative name.

Pre-release photo of Wario driving through Wario's Gold Mine in Mario Kart Wii.
Wario and Bowser skidding across the race course.

Anyway, on to the show. Mario Kart Wii, as its name suggests, is a Mario Kart game coming out only for the Wii. Bundled with it, is the Wii Wheel, and new attachment for the Wii that allows players to experience the actual experience of driving. Not too shabby. It plans to have more characters than any Mario Kart game before, even more than the famous Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. So, be prepared for a large selection of characters. Boo is currently the only new character we have seen, but I'm hoping for some more. Well, as of yet, no REALLY big information has been revealed on the game. Players are able to do stunts when they jump off ramps. I'd like to take a try at those stunts. Show off to my friends. We don't know how it effects gameplay, however.

Next year, 2008, is the year this game comes out, so be prepared for early 2008 if you live in America. However, any Japanese, Australian and European fans will, unfortunately, have to wait later on in the year.

Mario Party DS

North American box art for Mario Party DS
Mario Party DS's Boxart.

Mario Party fans are at the edge of their seat, waiting for the Nintendo DS installment of Mario Party, Mario Party DS.

Get the Lead Out from Mario Party DS
An example of the dual-screen mini-games.

What makes this game interesting, is the Nintendo DS's dual-screen and touch screen capabilities. That would make a good Mario Party game, playing Mini-Games with the stylus, and playing with two screens, doubles the things that are happening during a Mini-Game. Well, it appears that the story revolves around Bowser getting some sort of magic wand. Using it, he turns Mario and friends really tiny, and the gang have to traverse the boards, and defeat Bowser. Only, this time, they are the size of bugs. The boards take advantage of the players tiny sizes, or, so it seems.

How close are we to getting this game? Well, Japan will see this game on the shelves on November 8th, 2007, while American and European fans will find the game released on November 19th, 2007, and November 23rd, 2007, respectively. Australia is still left in the dust, however, which is bad for me. This game looks awesome.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Well, everyone, prepare to see the third installment of one of my favorite Nintendo series. Super Smash Bros. Brawl promises to be larger than both Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. combined, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it become a top seller.

The Special Brawl mode.

Being released exclusively for the Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, for the first time, enters 3rd Party Characters. Although, we have known that for a while now, so why am I telling it again? Because it is important. Characters include; Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Fox McCloud, Samus Aran, Princess Zelda, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Ice Climbers, Pit, Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Ike, Pokémon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight,Sonic the Hedgehog, and Solid Snake. Solid Snake and Sonic are the only third party characters on the list, so far. Items, stages, and several other themes from many Nintendo series are being squashed into this packed game. A new feature is the new Adventure Mode, the Subspace Emissary, which is an actual story mode, not just a standard fighting mode. Mario, Kirby, Zelda, Peach, Pit, and Petey all have roles in this story.

Additionally, using the Special Brawl mode, players can customize and create their own battle modes. Thus, you are able to set it so that players have the Bunny Hood, Metal Box AND Superspicy Curry, all at the same time. The game also has a very large Wi-Fi Connection mode as well, with new features that involve messages through Taunts, and other such features.

Originally planned for December 3rd 2007, it has been delayed until February 10th 2008. So Japan will get it in first in January then America gets it February 10th. Mark your calenders for February 10th, 2008, all you Americans reading this, as that is when you are gonna get this game. Too bad Europe and Australia don't have any release dates, so, sorry to all those who live outside America and Japan... including me.

For more information on this game, go to the Official website.

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast

Er, well, racing games are all the rave now. Donkey Kong needed another racing game, and what better way to do it, then with rocket bongos.

Six of the characters.

Donkey Kong Barrel Blast stars Donkey Kong, King K. Rool, and many of their Kong and Kremling friends in a racing game that is far different from Mario Kart. The players ride rocket Bongo Jets, that keep them hovered in the air, as they fly through the forest. Sounds awesome, yes, but the awesome bit is the huge amount of unlockables. About nine, to be precise. Donkey Kong enemies, items, and animal buddies appear as weapons and gimmicks in the game. It also introduces a wide range of new Kremling characters. However, not much info has been revealed on it.

The game has been released in Japan already, being released there on June 28th, 2007. It will be released in the United States on October 8th, 2007. Europe and Australia still hang there with no release dates for the game in either Country.

Super Mario Galaxy

Super Mario Galaxy is the 3D platforming game everyone is looking out for. Believed to be the best of the series, will the game actually live up to what the trailers have shown?

Well, the game is the long awaited sequel to Super Mario Sunshine. After the mixed reviews of Super Mario Sunshine, many fans are hoping for an excellent game in the Wii installment, one without an excessive amount of flaws. Mario must rescue Princess Peach from an unknown villain, but this time, he is going into space to find her. Bowser appears as well, as an apparent boss, and a new female character, Princess Rosetta, appears to assist Mario in his search. Tyke, a small Star kid, will be the second player, which another human player can control to assist Mario in battle. The bosses in Super Mario Galaxy seem almost completely unique, with bosses such as King Magma Blooper and Prehistoric Piranha appearing for the first time.

Save your money, because this game is coming in fast. November 1st, 2007 for Japan, November 12th, 2007 for America, and November 16th, 2007 for Europe. Australia could possibly get the game when Europe gets it, but, it is unknown if that is true.

Donkey Kong Wii

Nothing much on Donkey Kong Wii. Sorry folks, but I am unable to talk much about this game, we hardly know anything about it. Doesn't surprise me if it will be released in 2008 or 2009. Well, what we DO know, is that it is an Adventure Donkey Kong game for the Wii.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

I've saved the best for last. Now, just shoot me if you hate this game, I'm sorry, but I just had to put this as the grand finale.

The entire cast of confirmed Characters.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games will most likely be the best sports game of the year, at least, in my honest opinion. The game has been famous for quite some time now for being the first time the two greatest video game mascots; Mario and Sonic have appeared in a game together. The two Companies, however, chose that the Olympics would be the best way to feature these two in a game together. Speed versus Skills. The entire list of characters are; Mario, Sonic, Luigi, Tails, Yoshi, Knuckles, Princess Peach, Amy Rose, Bowser, Dr. Eggman, Wario, Shadow, Princess Daisy, and Blaze. However, about 6 are missing from that list, and we have yet to find out who they are. Could one be Donkey Kong? Could one be Rouge? We will just have to wait and see. Almost all the Olympic events will be featured in this game, and several popular ones, like Table Tennis, Gymnastics, and of course, the 100 Meter Dash, will be in the game. I would recommend this game to many people, or, at least give it a try. Many are saying it will be bad, but I say, don't be a judgemental jerk, and just play the game. Yeesh, show some variety. Sorry, but people who judge games without playing them really get on my nerves. It will be on both the Nintendo DS and on the Wii, so if you have one but not the other, you are in luck.

November 20th, 2007. That is when you Americans will get this game, prepare, as this game will definitely be worth taking a look at. And guess what, we Aussies get the game 3 days afterwards, on November 23rd, 2007. How awesome is that? I've got my money stored. Europe, don't fret, you will get this game JUST in time for Christmas. December 25th, 2007, be prepared, as you will get the game during your snowy season of, uh, um, its released on Christmas. Japan, sorry, no release dates currently.

Entertainment

by RAP.pngRAP...

Hello, it’s a-me; RAPstar! And welcome to the ENTERTAINMENT SECTION!!! DING DING DING! Here’s some recent news of my section; I’m having a hard time finding flash videos and online games since I wanted them for everyone to watch, there’s a chance I might leave the Shroom. In addition, I’m having a lot of homework; Let’s hope this will run up well.

Mario Bros. 3 1-2 (1up)

This flash video is created by a guy named... Uh, Ben Franklin... I mean Yoshi-1up. And yeah; you guessed it, Newgrounds. This is actually the first flash video created by him, and yes; it's a major hit!! The story starts... You know what; it has no story plot!!! JKing! LOL; but it still has the funnies laugh stocking around its globe. Things will go funny in a 8-BIT world; even for that, the story goes when Mario gets a little fun when suddenly he knocked the good Koopas by "accident"; then Mario got PWN'd!!! Meanwhile; Luigi at another part of the level is waiting for Yoshi; luckily Yoshi arrived... WITH A KART!!!!!!!!! He decides to have a little fun also; until he knocks into Mario without the kart! After some 1UPs; the place needs fixing; when the graphics are updated; so does Yoshi, IN 3D!!!!!!!!! LOL. This is simply a funny movie, even on the first try. If you wanna go, go HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Super Mario Sunshine 64

Yes; it's an online game. More likely, a flash game!!!! GET IT??? Anywho-na, this game is created by Runouw and yes; he came from Newgrounds... AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!! The story goes similar to Super Mario 64; but with Shine Sprites... and Kamek... and Luigi... (JKing!!!!) The gameplay is like a platformer game; unlike the 2D platformers; Mario has helped by an object named FLUDD as they go into an adventure similar to Super Mario 64 (and Super Mario Sunshine). The cons is the collide movement feels kinda............... Like.... Uh....................................... Hmmmmmmmm............................ Errrrrrrrrrrrrrr.............. (Oh yes..................) OFF THE HOOK. That's how it freezes; at least it has a save feature while playing it. The graphics basically look average; despite of the mix-ups. When you get all the Shine Sprites; you get to battle Browser, I mean Bowser. So if you wanna grab into a game that lasts around over an hour; you got this into this BOX!

Well, I think I'm done. Still; there's a chance I have to leave the Shroom for Time reasons... It's time to feed Hooktail, my dragon, some Koopas. *smug*

Interview

by Mario riding YoshiXzelionETC

Xzelion: How did you find the wiki?
Pokemon DP: Well, I used to be a big Bulbapedia Browser. After a while, I decided to find a MarioWiki for my brother. I found it via link on Wikipedia, I think it was the Bowser Jr. or Princess Daisy article I found the link on.

Xzelion: How did making your first edit feel like?
Pokemon DP: Kinda scary. My first edit was a big edit, and on a character from a series I have never played. However, it felt good doing something on a website, in this case, editing a Wiki.

Xzelion: Do you remember who welcomed you?
Pokemon DP: Aipom

Xzelion: Out of all the articles, which is your favorite to edit?
Pokemon DP: Everyone knows that by now, the Super Smash Bros. Brawl article of course.

Xzelion: Out of all the users, which one(s) help you the most?
Pokemon DP: Xzelion
Xzelion: Anyone else?
Pokemon DP: Cobold.

Xzelion: What would you say is your number one goal right now?
Pokemon DP: To be the fifth User to get 10,000 Edits.

Xzelion: What is your favorite part of the 'Shroom?
Pokemon DP: Upcoming Games, because I did it. Joking. I like Upcoming Games because, well, I like all Upcoming Games. :P
Xzelion: And your least favorite?
Pokemon DP: Probably Fake News. Even though it is just for fun, it makes no sense at all, and it creeps me out.

Xzelion: Do you think this is the Final Question?
Pokemon DP: If I answer that, I am gonna get humilated. Yes and No. Yes, cos' it is currently the final question until you ask another, No, cos' another question may be asked. :P
Xzelion: Is that your final answer? (if you would consider it an answer :|)
Pokemon DP: Is that a trick question?
Xzelion: Who cares this interview is over. Thanks :P
Pokemon DP: :P OK. No Problem

Mario Knowledge

There is no quiz this month, as TheGreatBlockyBoo (talk) has resigned from the 'Shroom for personal reasons.

Trivia

Hey, This is Beanbean here, giving you some trivia about Nintendo and the Marioverse! Hope you enjoy ;)

1. According to Nintendo Power Magazine, Super Paper Mario is the first "5D" sidescrolling video game.

2. In the book How to Draw Nintendo Heroes and Villains Bowser is listed as Kerog, but is never called that elsewhere.

3. The enemy Growmeba in the game Super Paper Mario is seemingly based off of the single-celled organism called an amoeba, which like Growmebas, can multiply at an intense rate.

4. The enemy Longator from Super Paper Mario looks very similar to the Sandbag from the game Super Smash Bros. Melee

5. One of the Sammer Guys from Super Paper Mario is name “The Thousand-Year-Roar” is a reference to the previous game in the Paper Mario Series, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

6. The Skeleton Key, which is featured in many of the games in the Mario Party Series, is an actual name for a type of key which is used on certain locks.

7. The Sammer Guy Over The Flagpole name comes from the flagpole at the end of every non-dungeon level in Super Mario Bros.. A famous glitch involved players jumping over the flagpole, which is referred to in Over the Flagpole's speech.

8. In the game Super Mario Bros., the third and sixth worlds would take place at night, but all of the other worlds take place during the day.

9. The Space Ship, a location in Super Mario Galaxy, resembles Captain Olimar and Louie's ship from Pikmin 2.

Director's Notes

by Tadaa!2.gifPlumberTadaaa!.gif

'Ello once again. I apologize for the delay, which was due to me missing quite a few sections at that time. The deadline for the next issue is November 2, 2007. I will try to get it on the sitenotice in addition to the usermessage and talk warnings, as that seemed to work well in a combination. TheGreatBlockyBoo has retired from The 'Shroom, and his job is now open for Issues X and later. Additionally, make any comments, suggestions, or complaints at the comments page. Again, the next issue is due on November 2, 2007.

Hope you enjoyed this month's issue,
