An Emblem is a symbol that appears on any item used by a character in any of the Mario spinoff titles, usually representing said character in some fashion (for example, Mario's emblem is the red M that is sewn on his cap, whereas that of Yoshi is his egg). Emblems were used as early in Mario games as Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, in which the characters' emblems have been inked on the strings of their respective rackets, which is a continuous trend within the rest of the Mario Tennis games.

Emblems would make an appearance in the Mario Kart series as well, starting with Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, in which certain karts have their respective character's emblem placed on the kart's body. Starting with Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii, all characters would get a more streamlined, and more universal depiction of their emblem, which would be used in various other spinoff games since. Like in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, these emblems would be applied on the kart, bike or ATV. Starting with Mario Kart 7, certain gliders would also depict the character's emblem.

Mario Kart DS would also introduce customizable emblems, which could be made using the Nintendo DS's Touch Screen, and would've been able to be shown in online matches. However, this feature has not returned in the Mario Kart series ever since.

Emblems would also appear in the Mario Party series, starting with Mario Party 7, in which they were depicted on Character Spaces, created when someone places an Orb on a space. In Mario Party 8, an emblem appears next to the character to indicate when it is the character's turn. Also, when someone owns a hotel in Koopa's Tycoon Town, the emblem will appear on top of the hotel to indicate that the character owns it. In the minigame Stampede, the player must stamp his or her emblem onto blank sheets of paper.

Emblems also make an appearance in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and subsequent entries. The symbols appear on flags and Emblems (not the symbol itself) in these games. The Mario characters have their usual logos, but since all Sonic characters with the exception of Dr. Eggman don't have unique emblems, most have a one-colored silhouette of their faces at a different angle with a colored background.

Emblems also used for recent mainstream Mario games such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario Maker 2 for objects such as Goal Pole and Checkpoint Flags. The Toads (as well as Toadette in Super Mario Maker 2) and Yoshis in Super Mario Run use Toad's and Yoshi's emblem from Mario Kart series except they change its color to correspond with their hats and body color, respectively. Princess Peach and Rosalina in Super Mario 3D World, as well as Princess Daisy in Super Mario Run also uses their Mario Kart emblems.
